This is where, we would run the ball, to where the LB'er kicked from and the secondary is balanced. If aligned balanced and we don't have angles we would look for personnel mismatches. 5, Align in an unbalanced Set and see where the FS is aligned. Three questions can be asked about a quarterback prospect to determine if the prospect is an ‘option quarterback. When the three questions are answered with a "yes" than more likely the prospect can be an option quarterback. He may not be a Colorado or an Air Force style quarterback, but, he can run the option effectively to win football games. The first question is, regardless of athletic ability, does the prospect have the willingness to get off the ground after 2 "big hit", call the same play and run it aggressively? If the answer is "yes" he has the mental and physical toughness to be an option quarterback. Mental and physical toughness is the quarterback's ability to remain poised, confident, determined, and courageous regardless of what happens on the field, or off the field. Mental and physical toughness, not sheer athletic ability is the key ingredient in a winning quarterback. A quarterback who has average athletic ability and endowed with mental and. physical toughness is more likely to win than a quarterback with excellent athletic ability and marginal toughness. The second question, does the quarterback have enough athletic ability (speed, quickness, balance) to run for a first down on third and seven when the defense forces the quarterback to carry the ball on an option play? if the answer is "yes" the quarterback can be an effective option quarterback. The third question, does the prospect have the willingness to be an option quarterback? For the answer to be "yes" the quarterback prospect must be willing to execute option plays, not just tolerate running the option. THE INTANGIBLES Without question mental toughness, physical toughness, and caring are the three most important intangibles in a winning quarterback. That lesson was leamed in 1979, Our team had a freshman quarterback from Muskogee, Oklahoma. He was five foot ten and a little bit . and weighed about one hundred and sixty-two pounds. The young man was recruited by one college football program as a quarterback. Coaches considered him too small for the rigors of college footbal. But, the little quarterback from Muskogee High School is one of four quarterbacks in NCAA history to rush for over 2,000 yards and pass for over 4,000 yards in his college career. Entering his senior season in 1982, only Dan Marino and John Elway produced more total offensive yards in their college careers. And the firtle quarterback from Oklahoma certainly didn't have the supporting cast surrounding the two NFL greats. The quarterback from Muskogee was a gifted athlete with magic in his feet and daring in his heart. He possessed the intangibles coaches relish talking about in quarterbacks. He was unselfish, he had the "want to” (desire), an infectious positive attitude, along with other numerous intangible qualities. But, those intangibles weren't the prime reason he was successful. There was another quality within him which gave him the ablity to carry a 1-10 ‘team, his freshman season, to three consecutive winning seasons, culminated with an 8-3 record his senior year, He met ail the demands for perfection in practice with tenacity and a smile. He faced Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, and other clearly superior football tears with the same tenacity and the same smile. The tenacity was toughness, both mental and physical. But, what made the mental and physical toughness a force on and off the fie the way he cared. He cated about himself, in an unselfish way, he cared about his teammates, he cased about the coaches, and cared about the people involved with the football team. The more he cared the more the other players followed his lead. The team followed Prince MeJunckins, a quarterback at Wichita State University, and a 1-10 football team began to change i's fortunes. His caring was an emotional investment in the football team An emotional investment is the biggest investment a player makes to his team. Defining leadership to suit our needs and experiences, as football coaches, is often a struggle with ideas and words. We wish to define leadership in personal terms the way the great football coaches of the past defined leadership in their terms, But, in 1979 the definition of leadership became as clear as a bright, crisp, October afternoon in Kansas. Leadership was simply caring. COACHING THE OPTION QUARTERBACK Ten years of experience coaching option quarterbacks has developed a variety of thoughts on coaching an option quarterback. A critical coaching point in applying these thoughts is to be consistent with the style of coaching from one quarterback to another quarterback. Coach a young quarterback as you ‘would want your son to be coached. Coach the quarterbacks the same, regardless of athletic ability. Remember all the apples don't ripen at the same time. Some quarterbacks can mentally and physically accomplish a variety of tasks without much difficulty. Others struggle with the same tasks. More than likely it is because they aren't mentally and physically mature enough to accomplish those tasks. Allow a young quarterback ample time to develop. Some of the finest apples ripen late in the fall. To coach and develop an option quarterback: 1. Set expectations, Expect each quarterback to be mentally and physically tough. Expect perfect execution of fundamentals, techniques, and assignments. Expect the quarterback to respect the football and to protect the ball as he executes the offense. Expect each of them to practice and play fixe an All-Conference or All-American quarterback, regardless of athletic ability. The lack of ability never lowers the expectations. The expectations raises the ability. Take time to outline and explain the expectations. 2. Demand perfection, Demand all the little things be done property. Insist on perfection in each snap count, each first step, each technique, and each play execution. Force him to concentrate all the time, Don't allow the quarterback to go through the motions, even when he is doing something as simple as handing off to the fullback. If perfection isn't demanded, then what is acceptable as good enough to win? When perfection isn't demanded, mediocrity is acceptable. . Mediocrity isn't good enough to win and most of al it isn't fair to the quarterbacks of the team. Don't allow marginal athletic ability to be an excuse not to work towards perfection. coach can't possibly attain perfection from a young man playing football, but, without the demand for perfection a quarterback can't improve. 3. Challenge decisions, The biggest part of coaching an option quarterback is to teach the decision-making process. After the quarterback understands the process the next coaching step is to challenge the quarterback’s decisions. Challenging the quarterback’s decision is an integral part of his education a8 a decision-maker. The challenge puts the quarterback in a mindset that no decision can be taken for granted. Oo Challenge the quarterback's decision whether the decision was right or wrong. ‘Ask him after each play which requires a decision why he made a particular -decision. Ask him to be specific. Hi Challenge the quarterback after he made a correct decision by asking him with disbelief in your voice. "Why did you make that decision?" The question tests the quarterback's understanding of the decision-making process and his confidence in his decisions. 4 Share respansibility, The quarterback must understand he shares, in part, the responsibility for his coaching. A quarterback must be responsible to coach himself because of the time constraints of a practice schedule. No young quarterback takes enough repetitions in practice to become totally proficient at the variety of factors necessary to execute an offense. In order to add to ‘the physical repetitions a quarterback receives in practice he must add mental repetitions by observing. A quarterback must lear to place himself under the center when another quarterback is involved in a drill or executing the offense. As an observer he must critique his counter part and lear from what he did correctly or incorrectly. To insure the quarterback is taking the responsibility to coach himself test his awareness every second or third play by asking him a question. Force his mind to work overtime. THE QUARTERBACK AND THE OPTION For a quarterback prospect to develop into an option quarterback he must be coached to understand: 1. the theories behind the option plays and how the quarterback brings life to those theories. 2 the decision-making process which enables the quarterback to make the proper decisions to effectively execute the offense. 3. how to protect himself when he runs the football, and 4. how important it is to respect and protect the football. THE QUARTEBACK'S WILLINGNESS For the quarterback to make a contribution to the offense he must be willing to: 1. take the initiative and the time, on and off the field, to prepare himself mentally and physically. 2. become a student of option football by giving his attention and energy to detail (doing the “little things"), and 3. accept the positive and negative aspects of being a quarterback in stride and never allow either the positives or negatives to effect his attitude or performance on or off the field. THE QUARTERBACK'S FIELD LEADERSHIP A quarterback's on-the-field leadership comes from his ability to: 1 2 3 4. control the huddle, congratulate the good play and forgive the poor play, understand and execute the offense, and understand the opponent's defense. THE QUARTERBACK AND WINNING ‘A quarterback to win football games must: 1 2 3 4 s. eliminate mental errors, make proper decisions, protect the football and have no tumavers, prevent lost yardage plays, and not make the play which loses a game for the team. G THE IDEAL QUARTERBACK ed An ideal option quarterback is: 1 4 s. 9. a young man who is mentally and physically tough, @ young man who cares, a young man who is a threat as a runner and a good medium range passer, ‘a young man who can concentrate for extended periods of time, - a young man who is able to respond to defensive pressures to prevent lost yardage plays, turnovers, or the play that can lose the team a game. a young man who makes decisions and lives with those decisions, ‘a young man who strives to develop as a sound fundamental player in both phases of the offense, run and pass. ‘a young man who iS a student of the gme with the ability to recognize and understand defenses to make the pre-snap reads to judge the intent of the defense before the ball is snapped, and a young man who is a student of the game who can understand the play selections used in the “Check with me” (audibles) phase of the offense. a DECISIONMAKING The ability to make the decisions to execute an offense is the true measure of a quarterback. Quarterbacking is decision-making. The quarterback's decisions win or lose football games. Regardless of the style of an offense a coach designs, it won't be successful unless the quarterback makes a significant number of correct decisions. Athletkc ability and mental and physical toughness are key ingredients in a quality quarterback. “But, 2 quarterback with these qualities can't get on the field when he doesn't possess the decision-making ability which allows the offense to move the ball. The most important and difficult technique to coach in amy offense is the quarterback's decision-making. The difficulty arises in preparing the quarterback for the numerous variables, either offensively or defensively, which influence the quarterback's decisions. The quarterback's decision-making in an option offense is the key to success because of the number of decisions an option quarterback must make in a game. To be a successful decision-maker the quarterback must be coached to understand and execute a simple and logical decision-making process. A quarterback can't be expected to be one hundred percent correct with his decisions, In football that is impossible when twenty-two players react on the snap of the ball. But, ‘two very important results must occur when the quarterback makes a wrong decision. First, the initial wrong decision isn't followed by another poor decision. Usually the second wrong decision creates a lost yardage play or a tumover. Second is, the offense has possession of the football after the quarterback makes an incorrect decision. ‘The quarterback must understand he will make X number of wrong decisions in the course of the game. Those X number of wrong decisions are acceptable if the offense has possession of the football when the whistle blows to end the play. An offense can recover from a quarterback's wrong decision, but often can’t recover from a tumover. Regardless of how complex double or triple option decisions appear those decisions aren't complex when a simple, logical decision-making process is coached, practiced and applied in a game. In an option offense the quarterback must have the decision-making tools ‘to minimize the risks in an option offense. An option quarterback to consistently make the proper decisions must be coached to: 1, make one way decisions, 2 pre-snap read the defense, and 3. understand the perimeter of the defense. ONE WAY DECISIONS The key to consistently making correct decisions in an option offense is for the quarterback to make one way decisions, One way decisions are predetermined in the huddle or at the line of scrimmage. Ina double option play the quarterback can't come down the fine of scrimmage to option number three, hesitate and then decide whether to pitch the ball to the tailback or not to pitch the ball. The decision can be predetermined for the quarterback with a one way decision-making process. The one way decision-making process removes any hesitancy because the process instructs the quarterback exactly what to do when he reaches number three. The one way decision-making process instructs the quarterback to pitch the ball off number three, until number three won't allow him to pitch the bail. When the quarterback takes the snap and comes down the line of scrimmage he tells himself, “Pitch, pitch, until number three won't let me pitch.” If the quarterback can't pitch because number three plays in the pitch, the only choice left is keep the ball and run. The one way decision-making process gives the quarterback one chcice on a double option - pitch the ball. When that choice is eliminated, the next logical choice to keep the ‘ball is 2 natural reaction. . Reading triple option plays separates the true option quarterback from quarterbacks who run the option. A triple option quarterback must make back to back decisions in less than a heartbeat. First, he must decide whether or not to hand the ball to the fullback. Second, when the ball isn't handed to the fullback he must decide whether to pitch or keep the ball. The quarterback's pre-snap read and one way decision-making process for the read phase of a triple option play were discussed in Chapter 8, 60 Read Series. For the option phase of a triple option play the quarterback applies the one way decision-making process used for a double option. THE PRE-SNAP READ The quarterback's pre-snap read is a search for information which enables him to react to the defense when the ball & snapped. The pre-snap read supplies the quarterback with the information necessary to attack the defense with confidence. The quarterback’s pre-snap_ read is like Columbo searching for clues at a crime scene to help solve an intricate case. The quarterback's pre-snap read is a search for clues which enables him to execute the offense ‘with a minimum of risk in two ways: 1, The quarterback uses the pre-snap read to mentally isolate the defensive player, or players who are involved in the decision-making process. The pre-snap read prevents the quarterback from reading the wrong defender or ‘optioning the wrong defender. Both errors easily create tumovers. 2 The pre-snap read acts as an alert to prevent the quarterback from being surprised by the defense and is in a position to lose yardage or the ball The quarterback makes a pre-snap read for a double option by asking three questions as he walks to the line of scrimmage. The three questions are: 1, Where is the free safety? The quarterback asks the question to fe determine if the secondary coverage is balanced or overshifted. This question prevents the offense from running option plays into overshifted coverages where the chance of success is minimal. 2. Where is number three (the option man)? The quarterback must locate number three to insure the correct defender is optioned. When the quarterback pitches off the wrong defender there is a potential for a turnover. |. Where is umber four? The alignment of a number alerts the quarterback to number three's option responsibility, quarterback or pitch, Number four’s alignment tells him whether the run support blocker can effectively block number four to allow the tailback to run the option alley. Also, number four’s alignment alerts the quarterback to the possibility of a secondary blitz by the strong safety or a comerback. Without the awareness of number four's alignment there is a potential for a turnover. ~L The quarterback makes a pre-snap read for a triple option by asking four questions. The four questions are: 1, Where is the free safety? (For the same reasons as for the double option.) 2 Where is the read man? The read man's alignment on the offensive guard ‘or tackle establishes the quarterback's one way decision-making process for reading triple option play. 3. Where js umber three? (For the same reasons as for the double option.) 4. Where is number faur? (For the same reasons as for the double option.) When the quarterback answers these questions he can execute the option with confidence and with a minimum of risk. THE PERIMETER DEFENSE The quarterback must have a fundamental knowledge of perimeter defenses to execute an option play. He must understand how the defense reacts from a variety of perimeter alignments to defend the option. Ako he must recognize the perimeter defense to determine whether the offense has a number advantage or disadvantage based on the alignment. The defenders in the perimeter defense are the quarterback's alphabet to read the perimeter defense. The perimeter defenders include: the option man (number three), the run support defender (number four, either a defensive back or an outside linebacker), the free safety, and the defensive backs responsible for the deep half or third of the field. ‘The diagram illustrates the perimeter defenders for a seven man front with a four deep secondary. 2 oO ‘The Diagram illustrates the perimeter defenders for an eight man front with a three deep secondary. ¢ i c me mw Oo oO oO The Diagram illustrates an offensive number disadvantage (an overshifted coverage). The defense has three defensive backs aligned over two receivers. Ss The quarterback must understand that the alignment of number four in relation to number three is a key to determine the defense's perimeter option responsibilities. When the quarterback understands how the relationship between number three and number four can help him determine the defense's option responsibilities, the quarterback can pre-snap the Jerimeter defense to minimize the risks. To run an option play the quarterback must know pe ible for the quarterback and which defender is responsible for the which defender is responsit pitch. When number three has soft number four (either a strong safety or a comerback) aligned outside, more than likely number three has the pitch, number four is a deep pass defender, and number two Is responsible for the quarterback. But, as the 40-60 Series continued to develop the quarterback's option technique underwent a transition. The transition was set in motion by the athlete playing quarterback. Instead of the conventional option technique of attacking the option man’s inside shoulder he attempted to run across the option man's face. He was corrected time after time, but, he naturally continued trying to run across the option man’s face. It didn't take long to realize his option technique was very effective. At that point the principle of the quarterback's option technique was changed. The quarterback was now coached to run at the option man's nose. The change was made because it became apparent the quarterback was a greater threat ‘on the perimeter of the defense by trying to run across the option man's face. Often as the quarterback attacked the option man's inside shoulder the quarterback's relationship to the option man created a problem for the quarterback. The combination of the quarterback's downhill angle to the option man's inside shoulder and the option man sfiding upfield created a problem. The option man slid upfield about two yards ta keep the quarterback inside. The defensive technique invited the quarterback to take the inside running lane. The running iane was narrow and not far removed from the inside pursuit. The quarterback was continually forced to cutback inte the heart of the defense for short gains and big “hits”. The Diagram illustrates the option man up the field to force the quarterback into a narrow running lane. For an option play to be successful the quarterback must challenge the option man. The quarterback challenges the option man by getting to within an arm's length away from the ‘option man before he pitches the ball : THE EYES ‘A quarterback options a defender with his feet, his hands, and his eyes. ‘The feet get the ‘quarterback to the option man. A short step triggers the pitch. The hands pitch the bail, The eyes read the intentions of the option man. The quarterback must watch the option man's body and feet in order not to be caught flat-footed as the option man reacts. When the option man's feet stop, the bail is pitched. The eyes also look the pitch into the tailback's hands. The quarterback “looks the pitch in" to insure the tailback is in position to receive the pitch. He “looks the pitch in* to make sure the pitch is on target. A quarterback who “looks the pitch in" is the player who is in the best position to recover an errant or dropped pitch. THE PITCH ‘The quarterback's decision-making process and his application of the option technique are critical to an option play. So is his ability to piteh the football, ‘A fundamentally sound option pitch begins with the grip of the bail The ball is gripped on the stripe of the ball with the thumb and forefinger of the passing hand. The other hand ‘grips the football the same way. The stripe is surrounded by the thumbs and forefingers of Both hands. The remaining six fingers are spread comfortably, firmly gripping the football. The grip is called two points of pressure, The football is protected with two hands if the quarterback gets hit unexpectedly. Option pitches are made from two points of pressure with the ball held in front of the Jersey numbers. The quarterback's arms are close to his side, but, the elbows aren't pinned ‘against the rib cage. As the quarterback runs the bail shifts slightly from side to side in front of the jersey numbers. On an option play the quarterback holds the ball with two points, of pressure until he is ready to pitch the football. As long as the quarterback holds the bal with two points of pressure he is a threat to pitch the ball on the line of scrimmage or downfield. That threat makes the defense cautious and less aggressive. 9 From two points of pressure the quarterback can make the ideal pitch, The ideal pitch is a soft, arcing, end-over-end pitch which the tailback can catch with one hand. The quarterback won't or can't always make the ideal pitch, but, the ideal pitch is always his ‘objective. It is his pitch objective to make sure the taifback can reach out with the playside hand and while in stride catch the pitch with one hand. The tailback helps the quarterback target the pitch by extending his playside arm and hand as he runs the option arc. ‘The pitch is triggered with the quarterback's feet. To pitch the ball the quarterback takes a short step (9 to 12 inches) with the foot nearest the taiback. He steps into the tailback as he pitches the football. The step allows the quarterback:to make a fluid motion with his arms. The pitch hand may move with or slightly behind the step. To produce a soft end-over-end pitch the quarterback fiips the bottom point of the football up. The thumb pushes down, the hand rotates up, and the arm extends to pitch the ball to the tailback. The quarterback follows through by pushing the paim of his hand at the tailback's facemask and looking the pitch into the tailback's hands. The ideal pitch the one the quarterback is coached to make as he develops the technique to pitch the ball, But, as an option quarterback develops he must leam to make 2 variety (long, short, hard, soft) of pitches. He must leam to make a variety of pitches to compensate for the differences in pitch relationship which are created by the reactions of 30 the defense from play to play. However, the quarterback must always work to make the ideal pitch regardless of the pitch relationship. it a discipline that develops a fundamentally sound quarterback and very few poor pitches. ‘An important coaching point for coaching the pitch is to teach and dri the quarterback's pitch technique before he i drilled on the option technique. For an orderly progression take it one step at a time. First, teach the quarterback to itch the ball, Second, teach the quarterback the option technique. Then put the two techniques together. | OPTIONING DEFENDERS The quarterback coaching points to option a slow play defender are: 1. Pre-smap read the defense. Anticipate the intentions of the defense before the ball is snapped. 2. Always think hard end. Be prepared to pitch the ball quickly. 3. Mentally set in motion the one way decision-rhaking process. ("Pitch, pitch, until the option man won't let me pitch the ball 4. The tailback can take on tacklers, the quarterback avoids tacklers. A land needs heroes. sinall men and small -houghts come from small dreams. A man is as big as his dreams are. The technique created a wide inside running tane for the quarterback, The ees quarterback was running away from the heart of the defense and to the | option alley. 2. The technique allowed the quarterback to pitch the ball more often. The ball was pitched more often for two feasons. First, the quarterback chased the option man to get the ball pitched. Second, the ball was pitched more often when the option men were coached to restrict the quarterback's wide inside running lane. The Diagram illustrates the quarterback’s option technique of running at the option man's nose. s——— Regardless of the option technique one factor must remain constant.
