LITERATURE REVIEW OF PSYCHOANALYTIC CRITICISM

Given the enormous influence that Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic
theories have had on twentieth-century interpretations of human behavior, it is
nearly inevitable thatmost people have some familiarity with his ideas concerning
dreams, unconscious desires, and sexual repression, as well as his terms for
different aspects of the psyche :
1. The Id ( Meeting basic Need )
The Id is the only component of personality that it present from birth. This
aspect of personality is entirely unconcious and includes of the instintive an
primitively behaviour. According to Freud, the id is the source of all psychic
energy, making it the primary component of personality.
The id is driven by the pleasure principle, which strives for immediate
gratification of all desires, wants, and needs. If these needs are not satisfied
immediately, the result is a state anxiety or tension.
For example, Sally was thirsty. Rather than waiting for the server to refill
her glass of water, she reached across the table and drank from Mr. Smiths
water glass, much to his surprise.A hungry baby cried until he was fed.

2. The Ego (Dealing With Reality)

The ego is the component of personality that is responsible
for dealing with reality.According to Freud, the ego develops
from the id and ensures that the impulses of the id can be
expressed in a manner acceptable in the real world. The ego
functions

in

both

the conscious,preconscious,

and

unconscious mind. The ego operates based on the reality

principle, which strives to satisfy the id's desires in realistic
and socially appropriate ways. The reality principle weighs the
costs and benefits of an action before deciding to act upon or
abandon impulses. In many cases, the id's impulses can be
satisfied through a process of delayed gratification--the ego

will eventually allow the behavior, but only in the appropriate

time and place.
The ego also discharges

tension created by unmet

impulses through the secondary process, in which the ego tries

to find an object in the real world that matches the mental
image created by the id's primary process.
For example, Sally was thirsty. However, she knew that her
server would be back soon to refill her water glass, so she
waited until then to get a drink, even though she really just
wanted to drink from Mr. Smiths glass.
3. The Superego( Adding Moral)
The last component of personality to develop is the
superego. The superego is the aspect of personality that holds
all of our internalized moral standards and ideals that we
acquire from both parents and society - our sense of right and
wrong.

The

superego

provides

guidelines

for

making

judgments. According to Freud, the superego begins to emerge

at around age five. The superego acts to perfect and civilize
our behavior. It works to suppress all unacceptable urges of
the id and struggles to make the ego act upon idealistic
standards rather that upon realistic principles. The superego is
present in the conscious, preconscious and unconscious.
For example, Sarah knew that she could steal the supplies
from work and no one would know about it. However, she knew
that stealing was wrong, so she decided not to take anything
even though she would probably never get caught.

Psychological approaches to literature draw upon Freud's theories andother

psychoanalytic theories to understand more fully the text, the writer, and the
reader.Critics use such approaches to explore the motivations of characters and the
symbolicmeanings of events, while biographers speculate about a writer's own
motivations conscious or unconscious in a literary work. Psychological
approaches are also used to describe and analyze the reader's personal responses
to a text.
Although it is not feasible to explain psychoanalytic terms and concepts in
so brief a space as this, it is possible to suggest the nature of a psychological
approach. It is a strategybased heavily on the idea of the existence of a human
unconscious-those impulses, desires, and feelings about which a person is unaware
but which influence emotions and behavior.Psychological criticism has a number
of approaches, but in general, it usually employs one (or more) of three
approaches:
1. An investigation of the creative process of the artist: what is the nature of
literary genius and how does it relate to normal mental functions?
2. The psychological study of a particular artist, usually noting how an
authors biographical circumstances affect or influence their motivations
and/or behavior.
3. The analysis of fictional characters using the language and methods of
psychology.

DISCUSSION

1. Synopsis of the Film Spectre

This film talk about James bond. This film opening by james bond make
noisy sensation in the mexico when in the mexico held the day of the dead

parade. James bond try to fail the people homesidde. And the the scene about
find video that find by James bond. The video tell that if she(the woman in the
video) death, she ask him to come to Mexico and meet with Sciarra. Sciarra is
the beautiful and forbidden widow of infamous criminal. From the widow
james bown know the place that use to secret meeting. James bond infiltrate a
secred meeting and uncover the existence of sinister organitation known as
Spectre.
Meanwhile back in london, max Denbigh (andrew Scott), the new head of
the Centre for National Security, question Bonds Actions and chalenged the
relevance of MI6, led by M(Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlish
Moneypenny(naomiharris) and Q(ben whishaw) to help him seek out
Madeleine swann the doughter of his old namesis Mr White, who may hold the
clue to untanging the web of Spectre. As the doughter of assassin, she
understands James bond in the way most other cannot.
As Bond ventures towards the heart of Spectre, he learn of chilling connection
between himself and the enemies seeks, played by Christoph Waltz.
End the end of the film Christoper waltz try to kill Madeleine with box in the

safe Madeleine, he chase after crishtoper Waltch by the boad and fire a gun the
christopers hellicopter. Christoper helicopter burned and fall. James Bond
want to kill him but he change her want.

2. The Analysis of the Film

The film with entitled Spectre ideal if assessed using psychological
theory approach, because in the film address to the theory of psychoanalysis
that tell one's inner conflict. Therefore, it is very appropriate psychological
approach is used to assess what kind of inner conflict experienced by the main
character, the James Bond.
In the end of the film James bond want to killing Christoper Waltch
because his act. Chrishtoper Waltch try to make James bond amnesia with stab
his brain watched by Madeleine. And then Christoper Waltch also the person
who make spectre organization. And make the Jamas bond angry, chaoutic,

worried, christoper waltch confined Madeleine in the building and turn on a

bom.
We know that the act of make someone angry, chaoutic and worried will
make someone have ego to reply our habit like James bond want to kill
Christoper. In this film it is clear that there is a relationship of psychology in
the theory of analysis will be discussed. We know that the act of make someone
angry, chaoutic and worried will make someone have ego to reply our habit
like James bond want to kill Christoper. But because he have super ego that
saying to im that kill is the bad act he canceled her ego to kill christoper and go
to leave christoper.

CONCLUSION
Spectre is one of the film that can be criticized in Psychoanalytic
criticism. The film tells about james bond want to find a organization name by
Spectre.
Based on the theory and some evidence can conclude that this film
consist of ego and super ego that means ego is a set of psyche function such as
judgement, tolerance, reality testing, control, planning, defense, etc and super ego
is the aspect of personality that holds all of our internalized moral standards and
ideals that we acquire from both parents and society - our sense of right and
wrong.
