Countermeasures against Cold Corrosion
in Exhaust Valve Housing
Dear Sirs,
Cold corrosion as experienced in some exhaust valve housings
have, in general, been eliminated by the application of a heavy
duct exhaust valve housing in combination with a by-pass
cooling water arrangement introduced on the Mark V engines.
Recently, however, we have received a number of reports stating
that cold corrosion has also occurred on S70MC and S80MC Mark V
engines, however, at positions which were formerly free of cold
corrosion, viz. in the lowermost part of the gas duct, adjacent
to the bottom piece.
We have therefore modified the cooling water flow, and this has
been tested in service for more than one year with good
results.
The modified cooling water flow gives a general increase in the
duct wall temperature, particularly in the area subject to
condensation of sulphuric acid.
As illustrated on the enclosed sketches (Figs. 1 & 2), the
cooling water inlet to the valve housing has changed position.
Originally it was taken directly from the cylinder cover (A,
Fig. 1) into the bottom of the housing. Now the inlet is taken
from a pipe connection on the outlet pipe from the cylinder
cover (B, Fig. 2).

MAN B&W Diesel A/S

Denmark
Reg.No.: 24 231

Orifice plates inserted in the outlet pipes from the cylinder

cover and exhaust valve housing, respectively, control the
cooling water flow amount through the valve housing (C & D,
Fig. 2).
The original inlet at the bottom of the valve housing has been
plugged with a fitting through which the valve housing can be
drained.
On engines in service, the above modification can be retrofitted. The retrofit kit includes the necessary pipes, fittings
and a drilling jig.
The design of new housings has been updated in accordance with
the above. Future deliveries of spare housings will be fully
interchangeable with housings that are modified with the
retrofit kit.
For further details and enquiries, please contact our Diesel
Service department, or the engine builder.
Yours faithfully,
MAN B&W Diesel A/S
