Final Exam
Put your name on the front of the blue book. Put all your answers in the blue book. Start a new
page for each problem. Partial credit will be given for incomplete answers. When the exam is over,
fold your test papers in half and place it inside your blue book to hand in.
1.(15 points) For each of the following statements indicate whether it is True or False. If the
statement is False rewrite it to make the statement true.
a) Two balls, one launched with a horizontal velocity and one dropped from the same height
will both land with the same velocity.
b) Deceleration is always in the negative direction.
c) Mechanical Energy is conserved only when no non-conservative forces are present.
d) An object in a freefall trajectory with an initial upward velocity will have a positive
acceleration going up and a negative acceleration going down.
e) An object in a freefall trajectory with an initial upward velocity will have an acceleration
going up and a deceleration going down.
2.(10 points) A wheel lies in the vertical plane with its axis horizontal, like a bicycle wheel. It has
an angular speed pointed west. The angular acceleration is pointing east. Answer the following by
indicating the direction of the specified quantity as north, south, east, west, up or down.
a) The tangential velocity at the top of the wheel?
b) The tangential acceleration at the top of the wheel?
c) The instantaneous angular momentum?
d) The centripetal acceleration at the top of the wheel?
For the same wheel, tell whether the angular velocity is
e) increasing or decreasing
3.(10 points) A mass is hung from a spring scale that has been calibrated to measure kilograms in a
lab on earth. Which of the following circumstances will cause the scale to read the mass in error.
a) Make the measurement in a car moving at constant speed.
b) Make the measurement in an elevator (on earth) moving up at a constant speed
c) Make the measurement while the mass is swinging like a pendulum in the lab.
d) Measure the mass on the moon.
e) Measure the mass while the scale and mass are in freefall.
4.(10 points) According to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) a siphon is a pipe bent so that one
leg is longer than the other, and is used for drawing off liquids from a higher reservoir to a lower
one when the reservoirs are separated by an obstacle like a hill. Rather than tunneling through the
hill the water is made to flow uphill for part of the course of the tube.
a) (7 points) Briefly explain how the siphon works using the difference of water pressure
in each leg.
b) (3 points) Is there a limit to the height of an obstacle over which a siphon can work?
Explain?

5. A lower arm and hand together have a mass of 3.2 kg and are approximated Elbow
by a uniform rod 32 cm long. The arm is held in a horizontal position below a
FB
vertical upper arm by the flexor muscle or biceps that is attached 2.5 cm forward
of the elbow joint (as shown). The elbow joint is 2.0 cm in from the elbow end
lower arm and hand
of the lower arm bone.
a) (5 points) What force FB is required of a vertical oriented biceps to do this?

Car A

40o
b) (5 points) What force, both magnitude and direction (up or down), does the upper arm exert
on the lower arm at the elbow joint?
Car B
6. (10 points) A worker places a 5.0 kg box on a ramp at the top and lets it slide down the ramp
into a truck. The ramp is 3.0 m long and inclined at an angle of 30o with respect to the horizon.
The box has a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.25 with the surface of the ramp. How fast will the
box be moving when it reaches the bottom of the ramp?
7. (10 points) A raft is fashioned by lashing 8 logs together side by side. Each log is 2.0 m long and
has a diameter of 60 cm. (S.G. = 0.50). How much weight can this raft carry before the logs sink in
a fresh water river (1000 kg/m3)? Vcylinder = (D/2)2L
8. (15 points) A 15 kg child runs at a speed of 5.2 m/s tangent to the edge of a playground merrygo-round and leaps horizontally onto the ride. The merry-go-round is 3.0 m in diameter and has a
moment of inertia of120 kgm2. It was initially moving at an angular speed of 12 revolutions per
minute. What is the new angular speed in rpm after the child jumps on?
9. (10 points) Two cars collided at right angles at an intersection. At the time of the collision car A
has a mass of 1200 kg and car B has a mass of 950 kg. Car A was traveling at a speed of 22 m/s
and the two cars locked together and slid off at an angle of 40o with respect to the initial direction
of car A for about 25 meters as determined from skid marks at the scene. What was the final speed
of the two cars locked together immediately after the collision?
