Green Map System engages communities world-wide to chart a sustainable
future. We support local Green Map project leaders with our universal
icons, adaptable tools, multilingual websites, workshops and regional
hubs as they create perspective-changing community ‘portraits’. Each Connecting communities with
unique Green Map is a practical guide for residents and tourists as well
as a comprehensive inventory for decision-making. Working collaboratively green living, nature, social
since 1995, Green Map System brings people of all ages together to discover, and cultural resources:

In addition to Eyebeam’s EcoVis Challenge 2008 honor, this iconography
and Green Map System received 1996's Gold International Eco-Award,
1999's US National Award for Sustainability, 2001 Laureate: Technology
Benefiting Humanity, 2007's Environmental Quality Award, and others.
The set of 170 Green Map Icons debuted in February 2008. It reflects an
inclusive process initiated five years ago at Italy’s Bellagio Centre during our
first Global Green Mapmakers Gathering. Subsequently, icon designs, titles
and usage were discussed online and in meetings with our network of over
450 diverse Green Map projects in 50 countries. We reviewed how the icons
have been utilized on outreach and education materials in addition to
printed, digital, workshop and classroom maps. We also took note of the
urban and rural ‘local icons’ created to enrich Version 2. As we moved
toward the final phase, we invited public input through our Icon Open Studio
– both online and in NYC – to assure this collaboration had the best possible
results. Our deepest thanks to all participants over the past five years!
Version 3 is provided as an
easy-to-use font or stickers.
Every Green Map project
selects a sub-set of the icons
and can adjust titles to reflect
the local context.
