LESSON 1

NOUNS

NOUNS: are parts of the speech or words referring to :


 PEOPLE: (James, Anna, Christine, Billy).

 PLACES: (Supermarket, Post Office, Canada, Singapore, malls, school).

 OBJECTS/ THINGS: (telephones, laptops, cars, airplanes, books).

 ANIMALS: ( dogs, cats, elephants, giraffes )

 ABSTRACT IDEAS : ( Love, happiness )

EXAMPLES OF NOUNS IN A SENTENCE:

1. The dog ate the bones.

2. Last year, our neighbors bought a goat.

3. James drives a fast car.

4. The bus inspector looked at the passenger’s passes.

5. Sally is going to the Supermarket .

6. The chairs and tables are newly painted.

Directions: Fill in the blanks. Choose which noun is the best answer.

Exercise 3: Free talk:

Directions: Read the sentence below.

Teacher : Hi! How was your day?

Student: It was good. I finished early at work so I was able to go to the mall.

Teacher: Oh, you did? Did you buy anything?

Student: Yes, I did. I saw my favorite laptop, it was on sale, so I bought it.

Teacher: Wow, that’s great! You must be happy you got it on sale.

Student: Yes, I am. But when I was there, I felt so hungry so I decided to have a

burger at Burger King before going home.

Teacher: That’s good. So, I’ll see you in school tomorrow. Don’t forget to bring your

books. You will need them in class.

Student: Thank you so much for reminding me. I also have to return them to the

Library after classes.

Teacher: By the way, are you bringing your car tomorrow?

Student: Yes, I am. You can ride with me, if you want.

Teacher: Thanks for the offer, but I’ll just see you in school.

Directions: Read the sentences below.


“Hello! My name is _______. I love studying the English language. I know as I keep
practicing it everyday, it will get easier for me.”

“I look forward to speaking with Native Americans one day, since I have a lot of
American friends. I am so excited to hangout with them and talk all day. “

Nouns can be categorized as:

1. proper noun: is a name applied to a particular object, whether person, thing


place, months, or days. Should be capitalized.

Examples of Proper Nouns:

 United States, Wisconsin, New York City, Chicago


 Mr. Smith, Prof. Bellingham, Atty. Graham, Dr. Lopez
 Burger King, Mcdonalds
 Brent Hospital, Pacific Mall, Ocean Park, Disneyland , Niagra Falls
 December, Monday

Example sentences:

 I love the burger at Burger King.


 She was rushed to Brent Hospital because of bleeding.
 I drive to Los Angeles every weekend.

2. common noun : is a name possessed by any one of a class of persons, animals,


or things.

Examples of common nouns :

 teachers, dogs, cats, lawyer, malls, pencil, books, boys, waterfall, holiday,
university, country .

Example sentences:

1. We are going on a holiday.


2. The restaurant we went to was beautiful.
3. The teachers are on strike.
4. The lawyer charges so high for his fee.
5. I saw lots of cute dogs at Timmy’s party today.

Exercise 6 : Identifying Proper Nouns and Common Nouns.

Directions: determine whether each noun is a common noun or proper noun.
