Materials,SystemsandEquipment

Ingeneral,itisrequiredthatallmaterials,appliances,systemsandequipment,includingthosewhich
arenotspecificallyaddressedintheCode,besuitablefortheirintendedpurpose.
Wherenorecognizedtestproceduresexistforagivenmaterial,appliance,systemorequipment,
approvalforusemaybegrantedonthebasisofpastperformance.Insuchcases,atestdesignedto
exceedanticipatedserviceconditionsordesignedtocompareperformanceofsimilarmaterials,
appliances,systemsorequipmentmaybeperformed.Alternatively,whereabuildingofficialisawareof
theuseofthematerials,appliances,systemsorequipmentinquestionandhasfoundthemtoperform
adequatelyasintended,approvalmaybegrantedfortheiruse.
Insomecases,manufacturersmayseekapprovalfornewbuildingmaterialsorsystemsfromthe
OntarioBuildingMaterialsEvaluationCommissionoftheOntarioMinistryofMunicipalAffairsand
Housing.TheCommissionmayresearchorexaminematerials,techniqueandbuildingdesignfor
constructionandauthorizetheiruse.ArulingfromtheCommissionwouldserveasaBuildingCode
provision.

Concrete
TherequirementsforconcretemaybefoundinSubsection9.3.1oftheCode.Exceptasotherwise
specified,theserequirementsapplytoallconcretereferredtointheCode.

LumberandWoodProducts
Lumberandwoodproductrequirementsforuseintheconstructionofhousingmaybefoundin
Subsection9.3.2oftheCode.Itisimportanttocheckthatalllumberspecifiedindrawingsandusedfor
constructionmeetsthesegeneralrequirementsaswellasthosecitedinspecificsectionsofthisCode.
Individuallumberandwoodproductswhichdonotbearidentificationstampsshouldbecarefully
inspectedtoconfirmtheiracceptability.Alllumberandwoodproductsshouldbeproperlystoredand
protectedfrommoisture.Lumberwithamoisturecontentgreaterthan19%shouldnotbeinstalled.

Metal
GeneralrequirementsforallmetalproductsusedinhousingarepresentedinSubsection9.3.3ofthe
Code.SpecificrequirementsareaddressedthroughouttheCodewhereapplicable.

GeneralStructuralRequirements
Wherestructuralmembers,assembliesandconnectionsconformtotherequirementsandlimitationsof
theCode,competentorprofessionaldesignisnotrequired.Post,beamandplankconstruction,
however,isnolongerincludedwithinthisCodeandmustbedesignedinaccordancewiththe
requirementsofPart4oftheOntarioBuildingCode.Itisrecommendedtoreviewgeneralstructural
requirementsduringdesignandpriortoconstructionofadwelling.
AdditionalrequirementsregardingstructuraldesignconsiderationsmaybefoundinSubsection9.4.1of
theCode.

WoodFrameConstruction
Woodframeconstructionhasmanygeneralrequirementscommontofloors,wallsandroofs.Theseare
presentedinSubsections9.23.1,9.23.2and9.23.3oftheCode.Referencestotheserequirementsin

applicablechaptersoftheGuidehavealsobeenprovided.
