Function Notation: the notation f(x) is use to represent the value of a dependent variable (output) for a given
independent variable (input).

f (x) is read as f at x or f of x

f is a function of the variable x

y = 3x + 2

is in relation notation

is in function notation.
f (x) = 3x + 2

Evaluating Functions
Example 1: Evaluating f (x) means you plug in a specific value of x into the function f.
a) Create a table of values for f (x) = 3x + 2
b) Evaluate:
f (x)

Piecewise functions: Functions that are split into different pieces defined by different domains.

b) f(1)

c) f(2)

d) f(-2)+f(5)

Finding the argument: The x in f(x) is called the argument of the
function. If you are asked to determine the argument, you are looking
for the value of x that satisfies the function f(x).

Consider the functions f (x) = 3x +1 and g(x) = 2 x . Determine the values such that:
a) f(x)=0

b) f (x) = g(x)

c) ( f (x))2 = 2g(x)
