The
health
of our
men
.................................
By Suzanne Linton, NP
hypogonadism, low T, testosterone deficiency syndrome and lateonset hypogonadism. Symptoms of low T can include: fatigue,
loss of libido, memory problems, depression, lack of motivation,
irritability, gynecomastia (excess breast tissue), decreased energy/
muscle mass to name a few. These are real conditions that exist in
men, whether they admit it or not. Unfortunately it is not taken
into account or discussed like womens health issues tend to be.
Like womens health, mens health is equally important and
has been called by some as a health crisis or silent health crisis
because men on average live sicker and die younger than women
according to Dr. David Gremillion of Mens Health Network. Its no
secret men do not visit the doctor as often as women most men
take better care of their vehicles than they do themselves. Several
aging/sociological groups (American, International and European)
stressed in the International Journal of Impotence Research that
low T may result in significant detriment in the quality of life and
adversely affect the function of multiple organ systems.
Now if youre a man reading this, you may be thinking of a few
or maybe all of these: Theres nothing wrong with me, I dont
have a doctor, No insurance, it costs too much, I dont have
time, They have to do what, or put what where? Doctors dont
do anything (other than probe areas you do not want probed
and/or run tests), Why go when I already know what they are
going to tell me (lose weight, quit smoking, exercise, etc.)? Ill
tough it out Im a man, or the best one, My wife keeps nagging
me to go.
If youre nodding your head yes to any of these excuses, you are
not alone. But, if you think wellness is expensive, you should try

Dealing with

are driven into exile from one another, disabilities occur, someone
betrays someone. These sad times are a part of this human experience we call life, and they can be extremely painful.
When I work with folks who are enduring a profound disappointment, I try to be open to hearing whatever needs to come
out. I encourage them to feel as sad, mad and bitter as they need
to feel for a little while. When someone is hurting, the last thing
s/he needs to hear is to just get over it. It feels so much better to
be heard and understood than to be judged or chastised. (This is
true with children as well as adults, by the way. Sometimes our
adult perspective minimizes the pain our little ones are feeling

simple question. The question was, And now what? I realized that
I needed to accept what had happened before I could move on.
So, I went back through my list, and in front of each complaint,
I wrote these words, I completely and absolutely accept that
Then my page looked like this:
I completely and absolutely accept that this is so unfair.
I completely and absolutely accept that we dont deserve this.
I completely and absolutely accept that I dont know what to do
about this.
Then I was ready to remember and apply one of my most fundamental rules for life, which is this: There is something in me
which is greater and stronger than any challenge. For me, that
something is Spirit. It might also be called God, Universal
Force, Higher Power or Love.
We are so much more than beleaguered, powerless creatures
subject to every ill wind that blows. We are creative, resourceful, strong and resilient! When the fog of disappointment clears
and we have reasserted our strength, we can see ourselves and our
next steps much more clearly. In truth, it is not the end; it is a new
beginning!

normally escape artists, but you may want to use a screen over the
top of the tank to keep crickets from getting out and other pets
from getting in.
Choose the right substrate material. Some geckos may eat the
substrate and get digestive blockages, called impactions, so make
sure that any sand you use is a very fine grain. You may want
to wait until juvenile geckos are older before introducing sand.
Otherwise, paper towels, newspaper, reptile carpets, or ceramic
tiles can work. Decorations, such as perching ledges and rocks,
can add a natural appeal. Geckos also need hiding spots, so
include cave-like hide boxes.
Occasionally, the gecko will need extra humidity to aid with
skin shedding. Misting the walls of the tank or putting a damp
paper towel under a hide box can help with the process.
Provide food and water for your gecko. Use a very small amount
of water so that it will not become contaminated with bacteria. In
nature, geckos do not drink or get large amounts of water. Live
food sources can run the gamut from crickets to mealworms
to pinkie mice. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and
it is best to discuss feeding options with a knowledgeable gecko
retailer.
Like cats, leopard geckos will use one spot for waste, making
cleanup easier. Spot clean the tank once per week. Empty the tank
and sterilize all items once every three to four months.
Leopard geckos can be interesting pets. Learn about these
reptiles to ensure they enjoy a long, healthy life.

Adapt to
transform:
The system of
Rolfing Structural
Integration
......................................................................................
By Victoria L. Fuller
old patterns even though the injury may have healed long ago or
we left that repetitive job or abusive relationship. A portion of us
could literally be stuck in the past while we struggle to function
in our day-to-day lives. Until we work to consciously release old
patterns, we are not fully operating in the present.
Rolfing SI helps to create new movement opportunities and
pathways for motion by directly addressing restrictions held
within both the perceptual field and fascial web of connective
tissue that surrounds, supports and protects all muscles, organs,
nerves and bones of the body. The secret to the work lies in the
process and approach to releasing restricted tissues. Any handson intervention is performed with a healthy center of gravity in
mind so that the body is able to more fully adapt and integrate the
new changes. So, if a person has ongoing neck and shoulder issues
the legs, hips and pelvic girdle are also likely to receive attention
and vice versa.
The systematic and integrative nature of Rolfing SI helps recipients of the work find that they are better able to sit and stand
upright with greater ease and awareness. This can have profound
effects on posture and how one relates to his or her world. For
instance, a very tall gentleman with neck and shoulder issues may
finally understand and realize that he doesnt always have to look
down in order to relate to people who happen to be shorter. A
woman with similar complaints may have survived a string of
abusive relationships or emotional disappointments but can now
more fully comprehend that she does not need to move about the
world physically protecting her heart by collapsing her chest or
slouching her shoulders. And then there is the athlete who badly
injured her knee and had to have surgical repairs she needed
www.naturespathways.com
help getting her body to regain trust in the new knee so that her
gait and, therefore game, could improve. There are so many variables and ways of falling into or being locked into patterns that,
ultimately, do not serve us down the road.
How does one know if he or she may need or want to experience
Rolfing Structural Integration? The answer varies with each individual. Some folks know that they do not move the way they used
to, and they want to feel lighter, more flexible and more fluid (and
younger!) in their bodies. Others realize that they may not have
been as active as they once were and crave a healthier lifestyle. Some
people are on a life-long journey of learning to care for their bodies,
minds and spirits and want to release bodily clutter, old attitudes
and stuck emotions that prevent them from being more present and
resilient. Or maybe someone suffers from some form of discomfort
or pain and they have tried everything but Rolfing SI. Regardless of
the reason for seeking out the work, usually everyone who seeks out
Rolfing SI desires some form of change.
So as you walk outside this January and take in the amazing
ever-changing natural world surrounding you, take notice of how
your body feels. Does your body also beg for transformation?

Exercise
tips for
beginners
.................................................
stay motivated is to keep track of your progress. If youre working out but not monitoring your results, you may not feel like
youre getting anywhere. Keep a workout
diary, tracking both your successes and
failures, so you can see whats working and
whats not. The longer you stay committed
to your workout routine, the greater the
likelihood that you will be tracking more
successes than failures, and those successes
can provide the motivation to keep you
going on those inevitable days when you
want to skip workouts.
Returning to exercise after an extended
period of inactivity can be quite the challenge, but its nothing motivated men and
women cannot overcome.

A ketogenic
diet for health
and
weight
loss
.............................................................................
By Pam Wellbrock
fed. Even though dairy and eggs are allowed on the ketogenic diet,
they must be avoided if you are allergic to them.
Breakfast could consist of a scrambled egg or two along with a
bowl of steamed or sauted mixed vegetables with a pat of butter.
A large leafy green salad topped with avocado and sunflower
seeds along with a grilled chicken breast is a great lunch. Cream
of squash soup, green beans and fish might finish the day for a
nutritious supper. These are a few examples of ketogenic diet meal
plans. Increase your serving size according to your caloric needs.
There are many wonderful ketogenic diet recipe books and
meal ideas on the Internet. For example, tasty crackers are made
from almond flour, olive oil and salt. The main idea is to avoid
simple sugars and grains, which burn as glucose while the ketogenic diet is designed to burn fat as a fuel source and to keep extra
fat off the body. A lean body is a healthy body. The ketogenic diet
is very satisfying since fats are a slow burning fuel source while
sugars are quickly burned usually triggering excessive appetite.
Once you are at your ideal weight, a small amount of fruit may
be added to your diet. For example, an apple may be combined
with a handful of raw nuts or seeds to maintain the fat burning
process. Concentrated sweets should be avoided, otherwise the fat
burning mechanism will turn off and switch over to using glucose
as your fuel source.
If you would like to lose weight, try using Ketopia, an excellent
diet kit sold through FGXpress. Consumers are reporting a to
1 pound weight loss per day while using this 10-day kit. KetonX,
included in the kit, is a patented drink supplement created by the
Southern Florida University stimulating the fat burning process
called ketosis. The kit also includes a meal replacement bar for breakfast and
a meal replacement shake for lunch. Your supper meal consists of a serving of
fat, protein and an abundance of non-starchy vegetables. This kit is designed
for you to quickly lose inches of unwanted fat. Ketopia kits may be ordered at
www.wellbrock.fgxpress.com. Please check the calendar section for upcoming
monthly meeting times in Appleton to learn more about FGXpress products and
hear testimonials. Join us on Jan. 28th from 6:30 to 7:30 at Globe University,
Room 101, Appleton, for a discussion about the benefits of the ketogenic diet and
taste samples of the FGXpress Ketopia weight loss kit. Also save the dates Feb.
25 and March 24 for follow-up meetings.

Making a connection ...
one member at a time
BY GRACE OLSON
Inform.
Being embraced by the LPSF team made up of 72
staff members, including 26 instructors and 8 trainers
happens immediately upon entering the luxurious
25,000 square foot facility, and continues throughout
your stay. (See sidebar on next page for a list of extensive amenities!)
Informing their guests and membership base is a
main priority for the group when it comes to welcoming people from all walks of life, and begins with a simple
phone call and invitation.
When people call, we take the time to understand
their needs, tell them about our club and always invite
them in for a tour, Megan says. So when they step
through the door for the very first time, they already
know that LPSF is not your ordinary health club.
Membership options, group exercise classes,
personal training opportunities, events and all amenities are discussed in that first tour. The value in the allinclusive health club is unrivalled. Once youve become
a valued member of LPSF, the communication only
improves with the teams constant updates surrounding new classes, small group training, promotions and
specials, and innovative programs via several mediums
in and outside of the club.
Its really, really important for us to make sure we
have touch points with our members, Felicia says. They
are constant reminders that members matter to us.
While those informative touch points come in many
packages: email blasts, social media promotions, rotating banners on LPSFs many TV screens and seminars,
Connect.
Felicia, Megan, Jane and JaTame work as a cohesive
front when it comes to managing LPSFs business, but
want to be clear about one thing:
We have distinctly different personalities! Felicia
laughs. And yet in our eighth year in business, were
still close friends and work very well together.
That unison and that connection is really important
to us, Jane adds. It trickles down to our staff, but most
importantly, helps in our connections with members.
Megan explains that having such unique character
traits in addition to maintaining such a strong friendship actually helps their business thrive in a big way.
By having one of us always there, members begin
to gravitate to us for certain things, she says. Theyll
go to Felicia with some questions and Jane for others.
Chances are youll have your pick when it comes to
interacting and seeing the four of them at the facility
within your time at LPSF. Not satisfied with simply
working in their offices, youll find them behind the
front desk folding towels and helping check members
in, assisting members in the weight room and directing tours.
Were right there in the thick of things so we know
our members and they know us, Jane says. Its one of
the reasons were so excited to bring JaTame on board
to help us take that connection to the next level.
JaTames role as Director of Member Connection is
to ensure new and existing members feel just that
connected. Scheduling new membership orientation,
one-on-one meetings with trainers and follow up calls
are only the beginning. Shes also available to accompany members to group exercise classes or assist them
in workouts they may be unfamiliar with.
If a member has always wanted to try something
but theyre nervous, JaTame will say, Ill go with you!
Megan says. They have that one-on-one time to
make sure they get situated and theyre comfortable.
Sometimes that initial hesitation and the fear of the
unknown is the hardest part about working out and
choosing a health club, Felicia explains, but that isnt
the case at Lake Park Swim & Fitness.
We want to stay connected to members and make
sure they always feel comfortable when they walk in
the door, she says. That means greeting them by
name and making them feel like a part of our family.
In fact, its not only the personal greeting members
have come to expect, but the farewell too.
Weve noticed members will stop when theyre
leaving our club, Jane says. Theyll pause and we
know exactly what theyre waiting for someone to
simply say, Bye! Have a great day! because they know
we always do.
Its in the belief that member satisfaction and
consistency in the services they provide is vital that
helps LPSF to thrive, not to mention the clubs overall
attitude in wanting to provide the best, most welcoming space for everyone in the community.
Inspire.
Lake Park Swim & Fitness caters to everybody, whether

Fighting
colds
and

...........................................
By Steve Lankford
ast month I wrote about preventing colds and flu. This month I will
discuss how to reduce the symptoms of cold and flu and getting over them
faster. Nobody likes to be sick, and no one
likes to be around sick people so it is in
our best interest not to get sick. But even
the healthiest of us gets sick on occasion.
Others are getting a cold frequently during
the winter.

Healthy
habits that
can have
a lasting
impact
....................................................
long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people.
While a host of factors beyond a persons control, such
as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how
susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there
are many things men and women can do to improve their chances
of living long, healthy lives.
KEEP WORKING. While many working men and women dream
of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and
for all, they might want to think more about a second career
than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry
found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia. While men
and women may want to retire from their professions, finding
second careers or volunteering close to full-time hours may
improve their long-term health and quality of life.
STAY ON YOUR TOES. A healthy diet is a key component of a
healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save
your life. Several diseases, including cancer and heart disease, are
more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and
discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early
stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear
may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a
proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection,
which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life.
Healthy habits improve peoples quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and
productive lives.
