A
LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
WELCOME, 2016!

2015 was a year not unlike others: it had its share

of ups, downs, stillness and chaos. 365 days,
52 weeks and 12 months filled with happiness,
sadness, laughter and tears. Looking back, it feels
almost fleeting time gone by so quickly.
And here we are, back to another January to
begin a fresh New Year. We know it will happen
and yet, its a surprise when it catches up with us.
Soon, a childhood has gone by, an adolescence
has been survived, and a lifetime passed.
We think January is the perfect time to bring
clarity to your life. It brings about a new perspective, new goals. Be kind. Spend time with people
who love and respect you, and who respect and
love you in return. Take risks. Delight in contentedness and comfort. Have fun!
For times gone by, my dear
For times gone by,
We will take a cup of kindness yet
For times gone by.
We two have run about the hillsides
And pulled the daisies fine,
But we have wandered many a weary foot
For times gone by
And there is a hand, my trusty friend,
And give us a hand of yours,
And we will take a goodwill drink
For times gone by!

The
health
of our
men
.................................
By Suzanne Linton, NP

ast month, my article was titled, Standard American Diet

(SAD) Is it feminizing our men? The answer is yes! The
SAD is laden with foods high in animal fats, unhealthy
saturated and hydrogenated fats, high in processed foods and low
in fiber, complex carbohydrates, and plant based foods. This is
not only a contributor to decreasing testosterone levels and the
increasing of estrogen in our male counterparts, but it also further
plays a role in metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, hypertension,
heart disease, atherosclerosis, stroke and cancers.
According to a 2007 article in Journal of Sexual Medicine, it
was estimated that diabetes alone costs Medicare $110 billion!
Also, obesity and lack of exercise is estimated to be responsible
for one thousand American deaths daily. This trend continues to
climb in our society and is estimated to overtake smoking as one
of the leading preventable causes of death in the US, according to
a Harvard publication. What is even more SAD is that the US
spends more money on cancer research than any country in the
world, yet the American diet contributes to the very disease we
are spending money to prevent!
The fact is our diets are definitely problematic in our society in
general. But it seems there is not as much focus on the health of
our aging men as in Womens Heath (breast and female cancers,
menopausal conditions, heart disease, etc.). It is known that
women definitely experience a variety of female conditions, but
men also face hormonal conditions too.
Changes that occur in a mans mid to later years is often
referred to as andropause, which is a transition associated with
low testosterone levels. Low testosterone levels may also be called

hypogonadism, low T, testosterone deficiency syndrome and lateonset hypogonadism. Symptoms of low T can include: fatigue,
loss of libido, memory problems, depression, lack of motivation,
irritability, gynecomastia (excess breast tissue), decreased energy/
muscle mass to name a few. These are real conditions that exist in
men, whether they admit it or not. Unfortunately it is not taken
into account or discussed like womens health issues tend to be.
Like womens health, mens health is equally important and
has been called by some as a health crisis or silent health crisis
because men on average live sicker and die younger than women
according to Dr. David Gremillion of Mens Health Network. Its no
secret men do not visit the doctor as often as women most men
take better care of their vehicles than they do themselves. Several
aging/sociological groups (American, International and European)
stressed in the International Journal of Impotence Research that
low T may result in significant detriment in the quality of life and
adversely affect the function of multiple organ systems.
Now if youre a man reading this, you may be thinking of a few
or maybe all of these: Theres nothing wrong with me, I dont
have a doctor, No insurance, it costs too much, I dont have
time, They have to do what, or put what where? Doctors dont
do anything (other than probe areas you do not want probed
and/or run tests), Why go when I already know what they are
going to tell me (lose weight, quit smoking, exercise, etc.)? Ill
tough it out Im a man, or the best one, My wife keeps nagging
me to go.
If youre nodding your head yes to any of these excuses, you are
not alone. But, if you think wellness is expensive, you should try
www.naturespathways.com

Andropause is essentially about

preventative medicine during
the aging process. If we begin
to take this into account, we
will not only be improving
the quality of life of the men
in our lives, but it can be cost
savings in the long run.
illness! For instance, there are many health conditions (high blood
pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar) to name a few, that
are in fact silent you do not experience any real recognizable
or significant symptoms until it causes a big symptom, a bigger
problem like a heart attack or stroke. Discovering a smaller issue
can be a lot easier to deal with than be slapped with a big one.
And right along the same lines, it makes more sense to spend a
little money, and save a lot, than vice versa. Not to mention if you
think doctor visits are expensive, how about a hospital visit or stay
for that matter. This also puts it into perspective a bit better: there
are approximately 8,766 hours in a year, and going to a doctor
appointment will take how many hours?
Andropause is essentially about preventative medicine during
the aging process. If we begin to take this into account, we will not
only be improving the quality of life of the men in our lives, but
it can be cost savings in the long run. The savings overall could
be tremendous and seen in our health/wellness, relationships, our
finances (individual/societal) and our lives in general.
Therefore is estrogen balance necessary for men? More and
more research is pointing to yes because estrogen dominance
in men can double their risk of stroke and contribute to higher
incidence of coronary artery disease, according to a Journal of
American Medical Association (JAMA) article. There has not
been enough attention paid to the aging of our men.
So urge the men in your lives to take time out for their health.
Abraham Morgentaler, MD, FACS - Urologist, said it best, We
always have choices when it comes to our health. For many men
with low T, learning about the condition and finding help to treat
it is a good choice a choice of life.
Suzanne Linton, ANP-BC, APNP, works at Wise Woman Wellness
LLC, an innovative wellness and hormone center at 1480 Swan
Road in De Pere. Linton is a board certified Adult Nurse Practitioner and an expert in sexual health and integrative medicine. Along
with caring for women with hormonal imbalances, Linton directs
the Mens Vitality Program (MVP). This program is designed to help men who are
suffering from hormonal imbalances such as thyroid and andropause or Low T.
This program uses laboratory testing along with physiological symptoms to outline
a custom program for each individual male. The program includes lifestyle coaching, nutritional guidance, supplement recommendations, sexual help and hormone
replacement if needed to restore the vitality lost as men age. Please contact her at

Healthy in
spirit:
Dealing with
disappointment
.............................................................................
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

hen disappointment hits, it can feel like a punch in the

stomach! You know what Im talking about disbelief, helplessness, frustration, anger and a resounding,
Are you kidding me?! That happened in the life of my family
recently. Without going into details, it was a crushing disappointment. Just when we thought things were all settled, they werent.
It was anguishing.
As a minister, a mature woman (and a mother, for heavens sake),
I am supposed to know what to say or do to fix it whatever it
might be on any given day. But, some things cant be fixed. Loved
ones leave, employment changes, house sales fall through, siblings

are driven into exile from one another, disabilities occur, someone
betrays someone. These sad times are a part of this human experience we call life, and they can be extremely painful.
When I work with folks who are enduring a profound disappointment, I try to be open to hearing whatever needs to come
out. I encourage them to feel as sad, mad and bitter as they need
to feel for a little while. When someone is hurting, the last thing
s/he needs to hear is to just get over it. It feels so much better to
be heard and understood than to be judged or chastised. (This is
true with children as well as adults, by the way. Sometimes our
adult perspective minimizes the pain our little ones are feeling

when a toy breaks or a special bracelet is lost.)
If I am the one experiencing the disappointment, I need to
express myself in safe ways with safe people, or at least do my own
processing. That might be writing down my own thoughts and
feelings, and continuing until I run dry. Recently, I did just that.
On a sheet of paper, I wrote down all of my sadness, disappointment, anger and so forth. As I continued, I found that the intensity of
my feelings began to subside a bit. Examples:
This is so unfair.
We dont deserve this.
I dont know what to do about this.
When I ran out of things to write, I stopped, and I asked myself a

simple question. The question was, And now what? I realized that
I needed to accept what had happened before I could move on.
So, I went back through my list, and in front of each complaint,
I wrote these words, I completely and absolutely accept that
Then my page looked like this:
I completely and absolutely accept that this is so unfair.
I completely and absolutely accept that we dont deserve this.
I completely and absolutely accept that I dont know what to do
about this.
Then I was ready to remember and apply one of my most fundamental rules for life, which is this: There is something in me
which is greater and stronger than any challenge. For me, that
something is Spirit. It might also be called God, Universal
Force, Higher Power or Love.
We are so much more than beleaguered, powerless creatures
subject to every ill wind that blows. We are creative, resourceful, strong and resilient! When the fog of disappointment clears
and we have reasserted our strength, we can see ourselves and our
next steps much more clearly. In truth, it is not the end; it is a new
beginning!

The basics
on leopard
gecko
care
......................................................

urry dogs, cuddly cats, fluffy hamsters, and feathered birds

may be the preferred pets of choice in homes across the
country, but a fair share of pet lovers are enamored with
reptiles and decidedly more unusual pets.
The leopard gecko is one lizard that many reptile fans find is
a great introductory pet for owners learning to care for reptiles.
Leopard geckos tend to be docile, require easy care and do not
need a very large cage.
Geckos are lizards native to Pakistan, India and Afghanistan,
where the terrain is dry and rocky. They like an arid environment
and prefer to live on the ground or even below it. Their spotted
skin makes great camouflage in their natural environments, and
geckos prefer hiding out.
Geckos are widely available at pet retailers, but sometimes you
may find a fellow reptile enthusiast who has bred leopard geckos
at home and is willing to sell you one or give you one free. Healthy
geckos tend to have bright, clear eyes, a thick tail that is at least as
thick as its neck and an interest in food.
You will need a tank to hold your gecko. One or two geckos
usually can live comfortably in a 10-gallon aquarium. If you plan
to buy more geckos in the future or even breed them, you will
need a larger tank.
Geckos require year-round warm temperatures that mirror
those in their native surroundings. A heating pad or heating lamp
will be needed to keep the gecko comfortable. Place it on one side
of the tank so that the other side will remain cooler if the lizard
needs to regulate its body temperature. Geckos are nocturnal, so
you will not need any specialized basking lights. Geckos arent

normally escape artists, but you may want to use a screen over the
top of the tank to keep crickets from getting out and other pets
from getting in.
Choose the right substrate material. Some geckos may eat the
substrate and get digestive blockages, called impactions, so make
sure that any sand you use is a very fine grain. You may want
to wait until juvenile geckos are older before introducing sand.
Otherwise, paper towels, newspaper, reptile carpets, or ceramic
tiles can work. Decorations, such as perching ledges and rocks,
can add a natural appeal. Geckos also need hiding spots, so
include cave-like hide boxes.
Occasionally, the gecko will need extra humidity to aid with
skin shedding. Misting the walls of the tank or putting a damp
paper towel under a hide box can help with the process.
Provide food and water for your gecko. Use a very small amount
of water so that it will not become contaminated with bacteria. In
nature, geckos do not drink or get large amounts of water. Live
food sources can run the gamut from crickets to mealworms
to pinkie mice. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, and
it is best to discuss feeding options with a knowledgeable gecko
retailer.
Like cats, leopard geckos will use one spot for waste, making
cleanup easier. Spot clean the tank once per week. Empty the tank
and sterilize all items once every three to four months.
Leopard geckos can be interesting pets. Learn about these
reptiles to ensure they enjoy a long, healthy life.

ave you heard of Palatinose? You can Google it and learn

all about its characteristics. It will not raise blood sugar
and it completely digests over a long time so it prevents
blood sugar spikes and lows. Those characteristics will aid in
weight loss and blood sugar control if used correctly.
What you wont find online is much about how to use it properly and where you can buy it locally. You will find that information here. In coming issues I will give you that information as
I do the research and create the recipes. What I have done with
Palatinose for myself is very encouraging. If you would like to do
your own research with Palatinose now, I can provide you with
the product and basic information about how to use it. Feel free to
call if you want some Palatinose now.
A note from Grandma Rose: My shop has been closed since
October 20, and several Natures Pathways issues have gone by
without my usual articles. The reason was my need for very serious
back surgery. It all turned out well and although my work is still somewhat limited, my shop will be open January 1, 2016; however, my
hours will be different. I will open at 1:00 p.m. and close at 6:00 p.m.
or at dark, whichever comes first. I am not cutting back on hours but
expanding them. I will also be open by appointment at any time you
call 920-954-9727 (including weekends). This will give all of us more
flexibility. I want to serve my customers myself as I have a lot of information about new products, diabetes and weight control and more

Adapt to
transform:
The system of
Rolfing Structural
Integration
......................................................................................
By Victoria L. Fuller

t is January and we are entering the thick of winter. This a very

different scene than the one we woke up to just three months
earlier, and nature just seems to take it all in stride. Have you
ever seriously pondered the resilience and adaptability of nature?
Can you resonate with this transformative power in your own
body? Our bodies and lives are capable of great transformation if
we create the room and space for change to happen.
Rolfing Structural Integration (or Rolfing SI) is a transformative
system of bodywork and movement education that can help the
body release old patterns and inefficient ways of moving, standing
and being. Habitual patterns may have served us wonderfully in
the past by helping us to recover from injury, survive a stressful
environment or assist us in performing a particular job or repetitive activity. Oftentimes, the body may unconsciously hold these

old patterns even though the injury may have healed long ago or
we left that repetitive job or abusive relationship. A portion of us
could literally be stuck in the past while we struggle to function
in our day-to-day lives. Until we work to consciously release old
patterns, we are not fully operating in the present.
Rolfing SI helps to create new movement opportunities and
pathways for motion by directly addressing restrictions held
within both the perceptual field and fascial web of connective
tissue that surrounds, supports and protects all muscles, organs,
nerves and bones of the body. The secret to the work lies in the
process and approach to releasing restricted tissues. Any handson intervention is performed with a healthy center of gravity in
mind so that the body is able to more fully adapt and integrate the
new changes. So, if a person has ongoing neck and shoulder issues
the legs, hips and pelvic girdle are also likely to receive attention
and vice versa.
The systematic and integrative nature of Rolfing SI helps recipients of the work find that they are better able to sit and stand
upright with greater ease and awareness. This can have profound
effects on posture and how one relates to his or her world. For
instance, a very tall gentleman with neck and shoulder issues may
finally understand and realize that he doesnt always have to look
down in order to relate to people who happen to be shorter. A
woman with similar complaints may have survived a string of
abusive relationships or emotional disappointments but can now
more fully comprehend that she does not need to move about the
world physically protecting her heart by collapsing her chest or
slouching her shoulders. And then there is the athlete who badly
injured her knee and had to have surgical repairs she needed
www.naturespathways.com

help getting her body to regain trust in the new knee so that her
gait and, therefore game, could improve. There are so many variables and ways of falling into or being locked into patterns that,
ultimately, do not serve us down the road.
How does one know if he or she may need or want to experience
Rolfing Structural Integration? The answer varies with each individual. Some folks know that they do not move the way they used
to, and they want to feel lighter, more flexible and more fluid (and
younger!) in their bodies. Others realize that they may not have
been as active as they once were and crave a healthier lifestyle. Some
people are on a life-long journey of learning to care for their bodies,
minds and spirits and want to release bodily clutter, old attitudes
and stuck emotions that prevent them from being more present and
resilient. Or maybe someone suffers from some form of discomfort
or pain and they have tried everything but Rolfing SI. Regardless of
the reason for seeking out the work, usually everyone who seeks out
Rolfing SI desires some form of change.
So as you walk outside this January and take in the amazing
ever-changing natural world surrounding you, take notice of how
your body feels. Does your body also beg for transformation?

M.D., Director of Yale-Griffin Prevention

Research, we live in a time when due to
poor diet, this generation of children has a
shorter life expectancy than their parents!
The overuse of antibiotics, vaccine schedules, over-the-counter drugs, and puffers
and inhalers are quite the bombardment
to a childs growing body. Any new furniture, cars or carpet have many harmful and
toxic chemicals lurking in them, not to
mention our cancer-causing hand soaps!
Even our food supply can be a detriment to
our bodies. Many are laced with harmful
pesticides, genetically modified organisms
and ultimately have no nutritional value.
Our children have learned to crawl, walk,
and finally run but not without incident
(trauma). There were many falls, bumps
and bruises along the way. Most times we
picked them up and inspected for blood or
broken bones, the crying stopped and we
assumed everything was OK, no worries.
Has your child been a victim of bullying
or teasing(negative thoughts)? Many video
games portray violence as an everyday occurrence and that it is OK. Do we monitor what
our children watch and discuss what they are

seeing? What about our very demanding and

competitive sports we enroll our children in?
Not everything needs to be
gloomy. There is a sun shining on the
horizon. In order to begin to make changes
in your and your childs life, you need to
understand a few very important things.
You need to understand that your brain
your nervous system totally controls
you. All of you! Every little bit. And we
didnt make that up! Grays Anatomy (the
textbook, not the TV series) says so!
It controls the function of every organ,
cell and tissue; your brain and nervous
system control every part of your being.
Your nervous system is comparable to a
super computer that runs the whole show.
In order for your brain to communicate
effectively with your body, however, there
must be a connection between the brain
and your body. That connection is called
the spinal cord, just part of your nervous
system. For those of you who are not very
clinically oriented, think of the spinal cord
as a telephone cable containing millions
of tiny wires called nerves. They originate in your brain and travel along your

spinal cord to different parts of your body;
the longest nerve in your body being the
sciatic nerve (it extends into your toes!).
And it can be up to seven feet long. Thats
a lot of nerve!
So, how important is it that your nervous
system is functioning optimally, as often as
possible, from this day through the rest of
your life? How do we begin to change our
future generations?
First, consider purchasing green and
nontoxic products for your home. Avoid
anything with chlorine, antibacterial
properties, triclosan or ammonia. Look
for products that say petroleum-free 90
percent biodegradable, VOC-free and

adjustments are vital for a healthy baby

and mom. What mom wouldnt enjoy an
easier and quicker birth and delivery?
Chiropractic kids are often happier and
healthier children.
With a few of these modifications to
your family lifestyle and visiting a pediatric chiropractor regularly you can begin to
safeguard your childs health. For information on finding a pediatric chiropractor in
your area, go to: www.icpa4kids.org. For

solvent-free. Eating organic, meeting

local farmers, or better yet planting your
own family garden, can keep food additives at a minimum.
Second, teach your children to recite
affirmations. Positive thoughts like, It will
be OK and laughter truly can be the best
type of medicine. Yoga and meditation can
help a child to have a better focus and life
in general.
Lastly, a healthy, properly functioning

Exercise
tips for
beginners
.................................................

he right combination of diet and

exercise is one of the keys to a
long and healthy life. While many
people find adapting to a healthier diet
challenging, that challenge often pales in
comparison to the intimidation felt when
working out for the first time in years.
Exercising after an extended period
of inactivity may intimidate people who
choose to workout at gyms, where fellow
gym members may appear to be in tip-top
shape. Overcoming that intimidation
factor can be as simple as working out with
a friend or working with a personal trainer,
each of whom can offer the support and
guidance beginners need when reacclimating themselves to more active lifestyles. In addition to the buddy system,
beginners can employ the following strategies to make their return to exercise go as
smoothly as possible.

regimen. Gradually build up your exercise

tolerance, exercising two or three days per
week and taking a day off between workouts when you start. As your body becomes
more acclimated to exercise, you can start
to workout more and with more intensity.

GRADUALLY BUILD UP YOUR EXERCISE TOLERANCE. When you exer-

resolving to adopt a more active lifestyle.
While gyms afford you the opportunity to
strength train and get in your cardiovascular exercise, theyre not for everyone. The
best approach and the one thats likely to
be most successful over the long haul is to
find an exercise routine that engages you

cise, your body releases neurotransmitters

known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. Those positive
feelings can be addictive, but its important that beginners do not go too hard too
quickly when beginning a new exercise

STRETCH AFTER WORKING OUT.

Stretching can improve flexibility, and that

may decrease your risk of future injury. In
addition, improved flexibility may improve
your exercise performance by improving
your range of motion and helping your
muscles work more effectively. Muscles
contract during a workout, and stretching after workouts can help reset those
muscles to their natural position. Include
both static stretching and foam rolling in
your post-workout stretching routine.
FIND A ROUTINE THAT WORKS FOR
YOU. Many men and women feel they

and that you find enjoyable. If the gym

is not for you, try to find a routine that
still includes both strength training and
cardiovascular exercise. Strength training
can make your body more durable, and
cardiovascular exercise can reduce your
risk for various health problems, including
heart disease.
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS. One way to

stay motivated is to keep track of your progress. If youre working out but not monitoring your results, you may not feel like
youre getting anywhere. Keep a workout
diary, tracking both your successes and
failures, so you can see whats working and
whats not. The longer you stay committed
to your workout routine, the greater the
likelihood that you will be tracking more
successes than failures, and those successes
can provide the motivation to keep you
going on those inevitable days when you
want to skip workouts.
Returning to exercise after an extended
period of inactivity can be quite the challenge, but its nothing motivated men and
women cannot overcome.

A ketogenic
diet for health
and
weight
loss
.............................................................................
By Pam Wellbrock

ver half of your brain is made up of healthy fat. With

your brain being a vital organ of your body, why are we
hearing so much about low fat diets? Could a low fat diet
be detrimental to your health and brain function? Back in 1923
a group of nutrients was discovered called essential fatty acids
(EFAs). These EFAs cannot be synthesized by your body, so it is
essential that you consume them in your daily diet.
Essential fatty acids are a component of each cell membrane.
With trillions of cells in the body we might understand why a
person on a low fat diet might feel like they are falling apart at
the seams. When you dont consume adequate healthy fats in your
diet, strong cell walls cannot be produced.
EFAs are also needed to form prostaglandins, which perform
a variety of functions. These include regulating hormones, pain,
blood clotting, calcium movement, cell growth, body temperature, kidney filtration, muscle contraction, etc. Consuming inadequate EFAs contributes to a wide variety of health issues.
One year after EFAs were discovered, Dr. Russell Wilder at the
Mayo Clinic popularized the ketogenic diet in 1924, using it as a
treatment for epilepsy patients. Many facilities are still advocating
the ketogenic diet as a natural remedy for epilepsy. The Charlie
Foundation has promoted ketogenic therapy since 1994. This
is when Charlie Abraham gained complete recovery from daily
seizures, despite trying all available anti-seizure medications and
brain surgery. He remains seizure free on the ketogenic diet.
The ketogenic diet consists of healthy fats, proteins, vegetables,
and is low in carbohydrates. The body is able to use fat as a fuel
source, which is created in the liver in the form of ketones. These
ketones provide energy for the functions of the body including the
heart and brain instead of glucose, which is derived from carbohydrates. This diet lowers glucose levels and improves insulin
resistance for diabetics.
The primary focus of a healthy diet is a variety of non-starchy
vegetables. Leafy greens, carrots, onion, celery, squash, green
beans, zucchini, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. provide an abundance of vitamins, minerals and fiber. In addition to this, eat plenty
of raw nuts and seeds like pecans, almonds, walnuts, sunflower
seeds and pumpkin seeds. There are many great sources of protein
available. The healthiest animals are organically raised and grass
www.naturespathways.com

fed. Even though dairy and eggs are allowed on the ketogenic diet,
they must be avoided if you are allergic to them.
Breakfast could consist of a scrambled egg or two along with a
bowl of steamed or sauted mixed vegetables with a pat of butter.
A large leafy green salad topped with avocado and sunflower
seeds along with a grilled chicken breast is a great lunch. Cream
of squash soup, green beans and fish might finish the day for a
nutritious supper. These are a few examples of ketogenic diet meal
plans. Increase your serving size according to your caloric needs.
There are many wonderful ketogenic diet recipe books and
meal ideas on the Internet. For example, tasty crackers are made
from almond flour, olive oil and salt. The main idea is to avoid
simple sugars and grains, which burn as glucose while the ketogenic diet is designed to burn fat as a fuel source and to keep extra
fat off the body. A lean body is a healthy body. The ketogenic diet
is very satisfying since fats are a slow burning fuel source while
sugars are quickly burned usually triggering excessive appetite.
Once you are at your ideal weight, a small amount of fruit may
be added to your diet. For example, an apple may be combined
with a handful of raw nuts or seeds to maintain the fat burning
process. Concentrated sweets should be avoided, otherwise the fat
burning mechanism will turn off and switch over to using glucose
as your fuel source.
If you would like to lose weight, try using Ketopia, an excellent
diet kit sold through FGXpress. Consumers are reporting a to
1 pound weight loss per day while using this 10-day kit. KetonX,
included in the kit, is a patented drink supplement created by the
Southern Florida University stimulating the fat burning process
called ketosis. The kit also includes a meal replacement bar for breakfast and
a meal replacement shake for lunch. Your supper meal consists of a serving of
fat, protein and an abundance of non-starchy vegetables. This kit is designed
for you to quickly lose inches of unwanted fat. Ketopia kits may be ordered at
www.wellbrock.fgxpress.com. Please check the calendar section for upcoming
monthly meeting times in Appleton to learn more about FGXpress products and
hear testimonials. Join us on Jan. 28th from 6:30 to 7:30 at Globe University,

25 and March 24 for follow-up meetings.

Outdoor
workouts
for
families
........................................................
By Chelsey Latimer

n Wisconsin we have to take advantage of our great resources!

For example, you can take some of your favorite fitness classes
outside! Most local gyms offer outdoor boot camps that are
guaranteed to give you an amazing work out and deliver results.
You can also check out the local trails or the Bruce Purdy Nature
Preserve. These scenic pathways will get your heart rate up with all
the different elevations to keep your body guessing what is next.
You can walk, jog or do interval training to spike that heartrate.
Run the hills and even look for stairs to walk or run. The natural
resources that we have in Wisconsin are incredible and we dont
have to go that far to take advantage of them!
Check out High Cliff State Park. You can bike, hike, rollerblade
and even swim. All while enjoying the scenery of the trees and lake.
Did you know that Wisconsin has over 15,000 lakes? Go to your
local sporting goods rental shop and rent a paddle board or a kayak.
These are great ways to get out on the water and get a wonderful
workout in at the same time. The best part in the summer is when
you get hot, you can jump in and burn more calories swimming!
Local schools offer tracks to run and you can add variety by
running the stairs in the bleachers. Go to a trail (such as the CE
Trail) and make it into a course. At every bench you see, do tricep
dips, pushups (either hands on or make it harder and put your
feet on), planks, step ups (one foot on and the other repeats from
ground to bench), or lunges with a foot on the bench. Even get
some of that much needed vitamin D from the sun!
Wisconsin also offers a wide selection of different races, from
your local 5K Fun Run to a 50K Ultra Marathon. These are great

things to do as a family, whether you are pushing your children in
a jogging stroller or they are running alongside of you. It is a great
way to get the family healthy and have fun doing it!
If you are going to the park with your family, sneak in a workout!
Do the monkey bars with your kids and add in some pullups! Put
your feet in the swing and use it like a TRX. You can do pushups,
pikes and planks. For an added twist, make it interval training and
run laps around the park between sets.
Always remember to wear comfortable clothing, proper
sunscreen (even in the winter!) and stay hydrated! Remember:
drink enough water before, during and after your exercise to keep
your body healthy.

Unexpected
benefits of
practicing
aerial
arts
..........................................................
By Kim Simon

here are many reasons why people

work out. The benefits of physical
activity have been well documented,
and I will not belabor you with statistics as
to why everyone should be physically active
in some way, shape or form. Working out
and getting active shouldnt be a chore,
it should be something you enjoy doing.
When you find the correct workout for
yourself, it should be fun, and something
you look forward to because of the many
benefits it offers to you. As an aerialist
there are many benefits other than physical
fitness that Ive discovered since taking up
the sport. Here are three unexpected benefits that Ive noticed.
INCREASED BODY AWARENESS. In

order to be successful at any aerial apparatus, the user must know what all parts
of their body are doing, much like yoga or
dance. A large part of aerial is maintaining
ones balance. For example, if you are trying
to do an arabesque in the hammock, if your
foot is not in proper alignment with the rest
of the body, you may tip over or need to step
out of the hammock. Being kinesthetically
aware of oneself is a huge skill that is honed
while practicing any aerial apparatus.
INCREASED SELF-ESTEEM AND BODY
IMAGE. In todays society, its unfortunate

how much thin is in. With everyone striving for the perfect figure, many people lose
sight of how great they are with what they
www.naturespathways.com

have. As a woman in todays society Id be

lying if I said I didnt ever have issues with
my body. I wish that Id had aerial classes
available to me when I was in my teenage
years because of the positive effects Ive
seen in myself. Working on poses and
tricks, or even new ways of conditioning,
gives me a feeling of accomplishment. It is
hard, but the feeling you get when you can
do eight hammock burpees now, when last
class you could only do five, that feeling is
amazing. The victories dont even have to
be your own. Seeing the person next to you
accomplish something new is contagious.
The positive atmosphere created in aerial
classes by the interaction between students
and instructors, and between students and
other students is truly unique. It fosters
acceptance for who you are and where you
are at, while at the same time encouraging personal growth by allowing you to set
attainable goals for yourself.
POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS. Ive trav-

eled to a few different places now to train

at studios other than the one that I attend
on a regular basis, and no matter where
Ive been I have always been welcomed
with open arms. Each studio environment
is always unique, but there are certain
aspects that do not change. First, students
and instructors are always welcoming to
new or visiting students. Every time I step
into a new studio there is an excitement
at seeing fresh faces, and a willingness to

share information and techniques. Second,

there is never any judgement passed from
instructors to students, or students to other
students. Everyone has a general understanding that each person is working at
their own pace and for only his or herself.
Finally, encouragement is everywhere.
There are always enthusiastic cheers whenever a new move is accomplished or a goal
is reached. It doesnt matter if you know
the person or if you just met five minutes
ago. As I mentioned earlier, the excitement
is contagious. Meeting other people who
share the same interest in aerial fitness is
an easy conversation starter. Ive met so
many great people from across the country
because of my aerial training; I am glad
that I was willing to go for that first spin.
These are only three of the hidden benefits of
practicing the aerial arts. There are so many
benefits that go along with the obvious physical benefits that should be considered when
trying to find your own personal workout
preferences. Whatever your preferences may
be, make sure to think about the added
bonuses to whatever you choose to do.
Kim Simon is a former student and current instructor at Aerial Dance Pole Exercise in Appleton. Kim
holds multiple Aerial Dance certifications, is a certified Aerial Yoga Instructor, recently attended the
Circus Arts Institute for additional training and has

What is a
physical
therapist?
...............................................
By Suzanne Laurent

physical therapist is a licensed health care professional

who diagnoses and treats individuals with physical conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities. A physical therapist utilizes treatment techniques
that have a goal of improving the function of the body, decreasing
pain and aiding in the healing process. They work in a variety
of settings and most hold a masters or doctorate degree from an
accredited school. Common settings where you may find a physical therapist include: hospitals (inpatient and outpatient), nursing
homes, private practice clinics, professional sports teams, school
systems and in work places.
Regardless of the setting, physical therapists are trained to
perform and examine in order to determine the patients mobility, strength, stability, joint mechanics, muscle tone balance and
sensation. The physical therapist then compares this information
to what is ideal for the patients condition and identifies the main
areas that need to be addressed.
These areas can be addressed through a variety of methods
including exercise, hands-on treatment, education of posture
and proper body mechanics, bracing and taping techniques, and
trigger point release such as dry needling.

How do I choose the right

physical therapist for me?

When choosing a physical therapist, oftentimes a patient follows

what the primary care physician may refer. This can be a high cost
to the patient. In the end, it is the patient that has the ultimate
decision to choose wisely. In our ever-changing health care environment, we see our health care costs rising. As a smart health
care consumer, you must do the research that is necessary to make
sure that your health care dollars are spent wisely.
Physical therapy services allow for direct access. This means that
a patient may be evaluated, diagnosed and treated by a physical
therapist without a referral from a physician or another health care
professional. Direct access resulted from health care reform in state
legislatures in the early 1990s, and was a solution to the problems of
decreasing access to care and increasing health care costs.
To stay cost effective, consider the location of services, time the
physical therapist spends with you and the results that you see
from your treatment. The following are sample questions that may
be helpful:
1. Where is the physical therapist located? You may not need to
travel into the city for good care. This saves money on travel
expenses. You do not need to stay within one hospital system
or organization.
2. Does my insurance cover this provider? Check with your
insurance plan provider to make sure that the provider is
in network since you will pay more to an out-of-network
provider. Also check with the provider if they have a cash
payment for services. Many privately owned physical therapy
groups, along with other health care providers, offer this
service to their patients as a cost saving service.
3. How long is my appointment going to be? If you are limited
to the number of visits per calendar year, it is wise to choose
a provider who spends more time with you, therefore giving
www.naturespathways.com

you maximum results with the fewest visits.

4. Does the physical therapist spend time with you one on one?

Overall, it is you the patient who will need to ask the questions
and do the research. Most physical therapy clinics have websites
with links to testimonials, biographies of each physical therapist
and a list of specializations that each physical therapist offers.
Other great resources are websites such as www.apta.com and
www.wpta.com for more in depth education physical therapy and
local physical therapy clinic locations.

Refresh and
renew your
room with
essential
oils
..............................................................
By Crystal M. Hill

ssential oils have so many wonderful uses and provide a

multitude of ways to replace products in your home with
safe, natural alternatives. One of my favorite ways to use
essential oils is in room spray. It uses few ingredients, its simple
and doesnt contain any harmful chemicals!

Ingredients:

1 6 ounce spray bottle (4 ounce or 8 ounce bottles work well too,

just adjust the quantities of the other ingredients accordingly.)
I recommend using a dark blue or amber colored glass
bottle. Avoid plastic as the oil will eat away at the plastic.
I found some inexpensive bottles of various sizes here:
https://www.aromatools.com.
1 ounce witch hazel or vodka
This helps prolong the life of the spray and also helps disperse the
oil. Rubbing alcohol can also be used.

Approximately 15 drops of essential oil

You have a lot of options here. I tend to use a mixture of a few
different oils, but using one oil works well too. For refreshing and
deodorizing, try 7 drops rosemary, 3 drops eucalyptus, 2 drop
lemon and 3 drops mint (adjust quantities to suit your olfactory
preferences!). Other options/combinations are listed below.
1 cup distilled water

Instructions:

1. Pour the witch hazel or alcohol into the bottle.

2. Add the oil(s) and swish around gently to mix.
3. Pour in the water.

Before each use, shake the bottle gently to disperse the oil; otherwise it tends to sit at the top of the bottle.

Other essential oil scents that work

great for room spray:

Calming Lavender, chamomile

Energizing Grapefruit, peppermint, wild orange
Deodorizing Oregano, citrus, tea tree
Outdoorsy White fir, cedarwood

PREVENT
CERVICAL
CANCER

with the Right Test at the Right Time

Ask your primary care provider if you are at risk.

SCREENING TESTS CAN FIND ABNORMAL CELLS SO THEY

CAN BE TREATED BEFORE THEY TURN INTO CANCER.
The Pap test looks for changes in cells on the cervix that could
turn into cancer if left untreated.
The human papillomavirus (HPV) test looks for the virus that
causes these cell changes.
HPV is the main cause of cervical cancer. HPV is a very common virus, passed
from one person to another during sex. Most people get it, but it usually goes
away on its own. If HPV doesnt go away, it can cause cancer.

IF YOU CAN SPOT IT,

YOU CAN STOP IT.

In union there is

STRENGTH
Lake Park Swim & Fitness
Making a connection ...
one member at a time
BY GRACE OLSON

Lake Park Swim & Fitnesss mission statement says it all:

Inform. Connect. Inspire.
Even in its concise delivery is the underlying and
straightforward message owners Felicia Christianson, Megan Collins and Jane Dias want to send to the
community theyve been a part of since 2008. They are a
united force, dedicated to motivating and educating the
Fox Valley in a variety of ways, but most clearly by simply
doing what comes so naturally to them.
The three of us are not only working in and managing our business, but were also working out in our business, Felicia says. Members see us working out, being
trained by our certified trainers, using the club amenities
we are doing what we want our members to do.
We lead by example, Jane adds. Our mission statement is simple to remember and easy to carry out. We
expect our staff to embrace it and live it as well. Were
linked together as a team, and know the importance of
being connected to our membership base.
The trio has worked together in the fitness industry
for 20+ years, and shows no signs of slowing down. In
fact, this year theres an intensified commitment at Lake
Park Swim & Fitness (LPSF) that members of the club
and the community can expect to see on regular basis,
catapulting the already idyllic business model to new
heights.
We are excited about the newest addition to our
team, Megan says. JaTame Schabo is our new Director
of Member Connection, and her focus is member integration: connecting members to staff, classes, programs
and other members. Truly making sure that every single
member has a sense of belonging at LPSF.

Inform.
Being embraced by the LPSF team made up of 72
staff members, including 26 instructors and 8 trainers
happens immediately upon entering the luxurious
25,000 square foot facility, and continues throughout
your stay. (See sidebar on next page for a list of extensive amenities!)
Informing their guests and membership base is a
main priority for the group when it comes to welcoming people from all walks of life, and begins with a simple
phone call and invitation.
When people call, we take the time to understand
their needs, tell them about our club and always invite
them in for a tour, Megan says. So when they step
through the door for the very first time, they already
know that LPSF is not your ordinary health club.
Membership options, group exercise classes,
personal training opportunities, events and all amenities are discussed in that first tour. The value in the allinclusive health club is unrivalled. Once youve become
a valued member of LPSF, the communication only
improves with the teams constant updates surrounding new classes, small group training, promotions and
specials, and innovative programs via several mediums
in and outside of the club.
Its really, really important for us to make sure we
have touch points with our members, Felicia says. They
are constant reminders that members matter to us.
While those informative touch points come in many
packages: email blasts, social media promotions, rotating banners on LPSFs many TV screens and seminars,

the owners still prefer good old fashioned conversation.

Our favorite way to inform our membership base is
of course face to face, Jane explains. If anyone has any
questions, we want them to ask. We are out and about
in the club and were accessible to our members. We love
interacting with them!

Connect.
Felicia, Megan, Jane and JaTame work as a cohesive
front when it comes to managing LPSFs business, but
want to be clear about one thing:
We have distinctly different personalities! Felicia
laughs. And yet in our eighth year in business, were
still close friends and work very well together.
That unison and that connection is really important
to us, Jane adds. It trickles down to our staff, but most
importantly, helps in our connections with members.
Megan explains that having such unique character
traits in addition to maintaining such a strong friendship actually helps their business thrive in a big way.
By having one of us always there, members begin
to gravitate to us for certain things, she says. Theyll
go to Felicia with some questions and Jane for others.
Chances are youll have your pick when it comes to
interacting and seeing the four of them at the facility
within your time at LPSF. Not satisfied with simply
working in their offices, youll find them behind the
front desk folding towels and helping check members
in, assisting members in the weight room and directing tours.
Were right there in the thick of things so we know

our members and they know us, Jane says. Its one of
the reasons were so excited to bring JaTame on board
to help us take that connection to the next level.
JaTames role as Director of Member Connection is
to ensure new and existing members feel just that
connected. Scheduling new membership orientation,
one-on-one meetings with trainers and follow up calls
are only the beginning. Shes also available to accompany members to group exercise classes or assist them
in workouts they may be unfamiliar with.
If a member has always wanted to try something
but theyre nervous, JaTame will say, Ill go with you!
Megan says. They have that one-on-one time to
make sure they get situated and theyre comfortable.
Sometimes that initial hesitation and the fear of the
unknown is the hardest part about working out and
choosing a health club, Felicia explains, but that isnt
the case at Lake Park Swim & Fitness.
We want to stay connected to members and make
sure they always feel comfortable when they walk in
the door, she says. That means greeting them by
name and making them feel like a part of our family.
In fact, its not only the personal greeting members
have come to expect, but the farewell too.
Weve noticed members will stop when theyre
leaving our club, Jane says. Theyll pause and we
know exactly what theyre waiting for someone to
simply say, Bye! Have a great day! because they know
we always do.
Its in the belief that member satisfaction and
consistency in the services they provide is vital that
helps LPSF to thrive, not to mention the clubs overall
attitude in wanting to provide the best, most welcoming space for everyone in the community.

Inspire.
Lake Park Swim & Fitness caters to everybody, whether
youre a young adult, a senior working through an injury
or rehab, an athlete simply wanting to improve your
fitness level, or someone who is interested in losing

weight. Theyre there to connect and inspire, no matter

your background.
There are so many different types of members,
Megan explains. We want them all to feel welcome
and most importantly to feel inspired to voice their
goals, make a plan to achieve those goals, and be held
accountable for doing so. Its the culture at LPSF and
its commitment made to each member to inspire,
educate and provide a state-of-the-art facility that
makes excelling such a reality for members.
We definitely want to see them come in weekly to
form a habit, Felicia says. Members usage is important
to us. We worry about them when they dont show up!
Feeling inspired to work out is decidedly easier
when you feel comfortable and confident in the people
assisting you. For this reason, LPSF personal trainers are educated, experienced and certified. When
you connect to a trainer during the complimentary
new-member orientation, you choose what youd like
to be introduced to. It can be a one-hour session to
familiarize yourself with the cardio machines treadmills, bikes, ellipticals a combination with the weight
room, or how to make the most of your pool workout.
Instead of just water walking every time, why not
incorporate the water weights or the use of the kickboard? Jane asks. A trainer actually spends the hour
with that person showing them different ways to make
their water exercise more effective.
Inspiration also comes in the form of support, and
that doesnt just mean the team. Megan explains that
in her experience shes found that members want to
belong to something not just a gym or health club, but
they want to belong to a group, and thats something
LPSF has achieved in their ability to inspire members to
connect on both a workout and personal level.
We encourage people to linger at the club after
workouts and enjoy complimentary coffee and conversation in our lobby and cafe, she says. This social
aspect helps create lasting relationships and lifelong
connections, inside and outside of LPSF.
Inspiration happens outside of LPSF too. The team

Cities Marathon, participate in raising awareness for
cancer prevention with on-site fundraisers, facilitate
in giving to the emergency shelter, veterans organizations and Homeless Connections. LPSF staff and
members working side by side inspires a sense of
pride, ownership and community involvement.
Members tell us that LPSF has become a second
home, Felicia says. They end up wanting to spend a
lot of time here with the people theyve formed friendships with. It really happens organically.
The club has an energy, Jane says. Its vibrant, its
alive. Everybody is welcome and feels like they belong
here. Members are a part of who Lake Park Swim &
Fitness is.

We stay connected to members and make sure they always feel comfortable
when they walk in our door. Greeting our members by name ensures
they know they belong to something. They are not just a number, and
we are glad they are using the club and achieving their goals.

Understanding
your
hair
type
.........................................................................
By Shawna Peterson

t can be overwhelming when it comes

time to choosing the correct products
for your hair type. The average woman
has 3 or more shampoos in their shower.
Step one is understanding your hair type,
which can be difficult because some
people can have two different hair types.
For example, someone might have curly
hair in the back of their head and straight
hair toward the front. Another example:
thick gray hair can be around the temples
of their head and the rest is their normal
color.
Everyone needs a balance between
moisture and protein in their hair. Your
hair should have elasticity. Each strand, if
healthy, can be stretched up to 30 percent
of its length. A great way to test your hair
is if you stretch one of your hair strands.
If your hair breaks easily, it has too much
protein and it is lacking moisture, and you
should be using a moisture based regime.
However, if you stretch a hair strand and
you find that it doesnt have elasticity, you
need more protein to build strength in the
hair. Your hair will often change as you use
different products so the elasticity test is a
great way to tell what your hair needs.
Hair can also change based on the

climate. In the summer,

there is a lot more moisture
in the air, which is why curly hair
gets bigger and is harder to manage.
This is when people with curly hair might

Flu season
is
coming!
....................................................
By John Sowinski

ebMD reported that last years flu treatment was only

about 18 percent effective for the predominant strains
causing the flu. The year before it was only about 60
percent effective. So, while the medical community is saying get
your flu shot, getting the flu shot doesnt guarantee that you wont
get the flu. There are ways to limit your chance of getting the flu
and minimizing the severity of the flu if you are exposed.
Making sure your vitamin D levels are optimal is extremely
important. Getting your level up to at least 70 ng/ml is essential
for a good immune system. If you have your levels checked, make
sure you ask for the specific number and dont just rely on the
practitioner saying your level is OK. Many times the labs will give
normal ranges that are between 30 ng/ml to 60 ng/ml. Studies
clearly show that this level is not enough to have an optimal
immune system. Most people will need at least 5,000 IU daily to
get their levels up to where they need to be.
Other supplements have also been shown to help the immune
system. EGCG is a supplement that has been shown to have antiviral

properties for many viruses that include influenza, hepatitis B and
C, and even Ebola. Research has shown that EGCG supports the
activity of the cells in the body that provide the immune response.
Numerous studies have demonstrated the ability of EGCG to
prevent the proliferation and growth of virus cells. An excellent
source of EGCG is green tea extract but you need to look at how
concentrated the EGCG is in the product you look at.
There are many other supplements to support a healthy immune
response. These include DMG, astragalus, black elderberry, larch tree
and Maitake mushroom. Each of these supplements could be a subject
of their own article but there are many studies available to show how
these support a healthy immune system. For example, astragalus is
a Chinese herb that has been extensively studied since the 1970s for
its ability to support the immune system. Black elderberry serves as
a source of anthocyanidins that are thought to have immune modulating effects. DMG, which according to numerous studies, can help
maintain a strong immune system by supporting increased resistance
to invading microorganisms and enhancing antibody and lymphocyte production. Larch tree is a source of arabinogalactans, which
support the immune system in its production of immune cells and
www.naturespathways.com

supporting healthy cell replications. Maitake mushroom has a long

history as an immune support product and serves as a highly concentrated source of beta-1-6 glucans, which research has found support
the bodys first line of defense, including macrophages and natural
killer cells. While a lot of this information is technical, the bottom
line is the body uses many ways to fight infections within the immune
system. Using many different supplements to support those different
immune responses makes for a synergistic effect.
If you get the flu, or more correctly influenza, it is a serious
disease. Flu symptoms include fever over 100 degrees, aching
muscles, chills and sweats, headache, dry, persistent cough,
fatigue, weakness, nasal congestion, and sore throat. Shortening
the time or lessening the severity of those symptoms is important and the right mix of supplements can help. Certainly you
should do the things necessary to keep you comfortable such as
rest, fluids and treating the high fever. Some natural practitioners
are recommending high doses of vitamin D to stave off the flu.
Many are recommending 100,000 IU daily for 10 days if you get
exposed to this contagious disease. While this is a high dose, and
I wouldnt advocate using this high dose for a long time, a short
course of this high dose is extremely safe.
While the best course is to avoid the flu, nutritional support can
help to shorten the severity and length of the flu.

need their dose of protein. Now, in the winter, most people get very
dry, and you might want to lean toward moisturizing products.

Lets talk texture:

Curly hair: A general rule of thumb is that curly hair is

always lacking moisture because the cuticle layer is never

completely closed.
Gray hair: Typically gray hair is so strong that it doesnt
need protein because it has many more cuticle layers versus
someone who doesnt have gray hair. This is why gray hair is
so hard to cover with color.
Fine hair: People with fine hair need to be careful because
most products weigh their hair down. They also need to
watch out for certain volume based products as they could
have alcohol in them and will dry their hair out to make it feel
thicker.
Hair treatments are an excellent way to give your hair a boost
of what it needs. However, use caution with protein treatments
as too much protein can cause breakage. It is best to stick to the
professionals so they can prescribe what is best for
your hair type.

Get a head
start on
tax
season
.....................................................

he dawn of a new calendar year

often marks the end of the sometimes hectic holiday season. This
time of year marks a return to normalcy
for many families, as the kids go back to
school and parents return to work.
The beginning of January also serves as a
great time to start preparing for tax season.
While the deadline to file returns may be
several months away, getting a head-start
allows men and women the chance to
organize their tax documents so they arent
racing against a deadline come April. The
following are a handful of ways to start
preparing for your returns now.
FIND LAST YEARS RETURN. You will

need information from last years return

in order to file this year, so find last years
return and print it out if you plan to hire a
professional to work on your return.
GATHER DEPENDENTS INFORMATION. While you might know your own

Social Security number by heart, if you

have dependents, youre going to need
their information as well. New parents or
adults who started serving as their elderly
34

Natures Pathways | January 2016

parents primary caretakers over the last

year will need their kids and their folks
social security numbers. If you do not have
these numbers upon filing, your return will
likely be delayed and you might even be
denied potentially substantial tax credits.
GATHER YOUR YEAR-END FINANCIAL STATEMENTS. If you spent the

last year investing, then you will have to

pay taxes on any interest earned. Interest
earned on the majority of savings accounts
is also taxable, so gather all of your yearend financial statements from your
assorted accounts in one place. Doing so
will make filing your return, whether you
do it yourself or work with a professional,
go more quickly.
SPEAK WITH YOUR MORTGAGE
LENDER. Homeowners should receive

forms documenting their mortgage interest

payments for the last year, as the money paid
in interest on your home or homes is tax
deductible. If these forms are not received
in a timely manner, speak with your lender.
You might even be able to download them
from your lenders secure website.

MAKE A LIST OF YOUR CHARITABLE

CONTRIBUTIONS. Charitable contribu-

tions, no matter how small, are tax deductible. While its easiest to maintain a list of all
charitable donations you make as the year
goes on, if you have not done that, then you
can make one now. Look for receipts of all
contributions, contacting any charities you
donated to if you misplaced any receipts.
BOOK AN APPOINTMENT WITH
YOUR TAX PREPARATION SPECIALIST NOW. As April 15 draws closer, tax

preparers schedules get busier and busier.

The earlier you book your appointment,
the more likely you are to get a favorable
time for that meeting. In addition, if you
have gathered all of the information you
need by early February, then booking
your appointment early means you can file
earlier and receive any return you might be
eligible for that much quicker.
Tax season might not be right around
the corner, but its never too early to start
preparing your return.

Homeopathy
for children:
A simple
and effective
approach
...............................................................
By Rebecca Beringer

My favorite aspect of homeopathy is the natural healing from the

inside out. Instead of just hiding the symptoms, homeopathy looks
at the root of the issue. With my daughter I have used it for acute
teething and colds, and also to address long-term healing. In both
cases it has helped her handle the healing process. My favorite aspect
is knowing her system is getting stronger instead of having to worry
about the chemicals in over-the-counter drugs. Mandy, mother
of two girls, 8 and 9

here is perhaps no better application of homeopathy than

in helping raise healthy, robust children. From infancy
through young adulthood, homeopathy can be applied
to help ease suffering and make the transitions of development
smoother. Homeopathy is safe, gentle and effective and takes
into account the individual experience of each child, applying a
unique remedy to each. Homeopathy works on a deep level and
can help restore balance in a gentle way.

babies, children and pregnant women to take.
Builds strength and resistance. Homeopathy works to
stimulate the vital healing energy of each person, restoring the
balance within the system to create optimal health and vitality.
Our bodies have an innate healing intelligence. Over-the-counter and prescription medications often work by suppressing this
mechanism. Over time, the healing response system of the body
gets worn down from the suppressing action and it becomes less
effective. In contrast homeopathy works with that natural force
rather than against it. Through the application of homeopathy
a suppressed healing response can rebuild, bringing increased

The trip meant even more to the Sauter

I cant even put into words what their

said Kris Sauter. There probably wasnt
a day that went by that Jay didnt receive

going through all of that.
I tend to think that Basset has employee
longevity because they treat people well
and they have a lot of respect for the people
who work for them. They value them and
let them know theyre important. Through
the years we witnessed a lot of other
examples when colleagues encountered
health difficulties or other challenges and
the Bassett team rallied around them to
support their families.

because most children throw off strong
vital responses. It is easy to detect their

behavior or eating and sleeping patterns,

as to what remedy can be applied to assist
their bodys innate healing response.
Involves children in the process of
his/her own health and healing. Children love homeopathy. I have never met a
child who refused to take a homeopathic

ask for remedies because they recognize
and know that they make them feel better.
When a caregiver or parent is applying
homeopathy they have to closely observe
the child and ask the child to answer questions. In this way children are involved in
their healing and begin to know how their

Fighting
colds
and
flu
...........................................
By Steve Lankford

ast month I wrote about preventing colds and flu. This month I will
discuss how to reduce the symptoms of cold and flu and getting over them
faster. Nobody likes to be sick, and no one
likes to be around sick people so it is in
our best interest not to get sick. But even
the healthiest of us gets sick on occasion.
Others are getting a cold frequently during
the winter.

It seemed I used to get a cold every two

months until I figured out what works for
me. And now I keep an arsenal of nutrition
products on hand as part of my natural
medicine chest. I have learned from experience a couple of key lessons that have
shaped my experience:
The first sign of a cold or flu comes at an
inconvenient time. For me it is often it the
middle of the night. I will sense it in my

nose or throat or some other small sign.

The key to this lesson is that if I get up at
the first sign and take my supplements,
I will most always stop it in its track. If I
wait until I get up in the morning, it will
be harder to overcome and take longer. Do
not be tempted to delay beginning your
treatment. Time is of the essence.
Keep your supplies stocked so you have
what you need at the first sign. It is no

Eco-friendly
New Years
resolution:
Recycle more,
landfill
less
....................................................................
By Jennifer Semrau

ach January people make resolutions to lose weight, eat

better, exercise more or spend less. And unfortunately,
by February, many of those well-meaning resolutions
have fallen by the wayside. The key is to make small changes,
which can become a habit. That holds true for all
of the above (eat just one more serving of
vegetables each day or start putting a
quarter or dollar in a jar each day).
But if you are looking for an
eco-friendly New Years resolution, here are some easy
tips that can quickly become
a habit and benefit the
earth!

Recycle more

Seems simple enough, but

the key is understanding
what you can recycle locally.
Luckily if you live in northeast Wisconsin, you can
recycle nearly all paper, cardboard, bottles and containers!
Did you know you can recycle
all of these things?
Plastic clamshells that held
40

Natures Pathways | January 2016

berries or bakery

Empty aerosol cans if they didnt contain a pesticide

(remove cap/nozzle)

Plastic bottles from your bathroom

(shampoo, soap, cleaners, etc.)

Metal lids from glass jars

Yogurt, sour cream, margarine and other dairy containers
Junk mail, including plastic window envelopes

and shiny paper

Plastic deli containers (potato salad, coleslaw, dips, etc.)

Paper tubes from paper towels and toilet paper
Any type of book (phone books, soft or hard cover books)
Cartons (milk, juice, soup, wine, soy milk, etc.)

Landfill less

Landfilling less can be accomplished in a number of ways. Being

conscientious at the store about packaging (buying in bulk for less
overall packaging or selecting a product in a locally recyclable
container) or purchasing from a thrift store or second-hand shop
helps yield less waste. Further, your recycling center produces
waste when consumers accidentally place items in their recycling
stream, which are not recyclable. If an item cannot be recovered
locally, it is better for the homeowner to place the material in their
trash, instead of it traveling to the recycling center first and then
going to the landfill. So its also important to remember a few
things that cannot be recycled in northeast Wisconsin.
www.naturespathways.com

Please do not recycle curbside:

Styrofoam (packing peanuts, stiff foam from around electron-

ics, egg cartons, etc.)

Plastic motor oil bottles (oil contaminates the plastic)

Paper contaminated with food or grease (pizza boxes)
Ceramics, dishes, window glass

WANTED

(not the same type of glass as bottles/jars)

Plastic bags, electrical cords, rope/twine (dont bundle paper)

Plastic bags are recyclable at retail locations (grocery/mass

merchandise stores). Typically, there are kiosks located at or near
the front of the store for plastic bag recycling. Unfortunately
plastic bags become too dirty and torn to be recovered in curbside
collections. Further, plastic bags, cords and rope/twine can wrap
around the equipment used to process recycling, causing significant maintenance issues.
Thank you for doing your part this January, and every
month, to help recycling thrive! This year, resolve to
recycle more, landfill less. For more information, go to

and the results of my ad. It has only been running a couple
months and I already have 13 new clients off the ad. Not
only are they new clients, but also clients that continually
book over and over with me! This is different from my
experience working with a coupon magazine in which case
people tended to come in and just use the coupon and
then didnt come back. I also have seen a better response
in this short time with Natures Pathways than what I have
with the coupon magazine. The clients I have pulled from
Natures Pathways so far are quality middle aged or retired
people that are great to work with.

he holidays have come and gone for another year, and

January is upon us. Did you know that January boasts
more than just the kick off to a new year? January is
National Hobby Month. As you relax following the holiday season
reconnecting with one of your favorite hobbies is an excellent way
to unwind your mind. Dr. Peter Lichtenber, Ph.D, from Wayne

healthier. We also know they are at a lower risk for depression and
dementia. The great value of hobbies is theyre a way for people to
stay engaged on multiple levels.
So what qualifies as a hobby? A hobby is any activity done for
enjoyment and pleasure, most often done outside of the workplace on your own time. A hobby is a get to do it activity, not a

The time spent engaged in

your passion can reduce
blood pressure, relieve
stress, reduce anxiety and
give your mood a boost.
You may have noticed that antiquing, knitting, board games,
meditating, flower arranging, going to garage sales or starting a
collection are not on the list. Point being that when it comes to
selecting a hobby, your choice, your passion, your interest is the
only guideline to follow.
Lets kindle your motivation to make time for your hobby by
sharing information from Michael Brickey who authored the
book, Defy Aging. He reports that hobbies serve three purposes.
First, hobbies engage our passion or enthusiasm, getting our
creative juices flowing. Next, hobbies provide a mini break and
distraction from our daily lives. Thirdly, hobbies give us a sense of
purpose and accomplishment.
Just in case you are still not convinced to make some time in
your schedule to enjoy your favorite interest or activity, here are
some additional benefits to pursuing a hobby. The time spent
engaged in your passion can reduce blood pressure, relieve stress,
reduce anxiety and give your mood a boost. Hobbies can provide
the much needed alone time we need to recharge our batteries or
regain perspective. On the other hand, depending on the hobby
you might have the opportunity to meet new people, share ideas
and feel a sense of connection you otherwise might not have.
Creating time to enjoy a hobby can be the best after the holiday
gift you give yourself. The slogan for January, National Hobby
Month, could be:

people to be with. Jaycquilin Marshall

Southwestern
Kale Power
Salad
With sweet potato, quinoa
and avocado sauce
.................................................................
By Kim Baehman, MS, Clinical Nutritionist

ealthy kale and quinoa power

salad with spicy sweet potato,
black beans and creamy avocado
sauce is a gluten-free (and easily vegan)
salad that packs well for lunch, too!

Ingredients:
Quinoa and kale
1 cup quinoa
1 bunch kale, ribs removed and
chopped into very small, bite-sized
pieces
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium lime, juiced
teaspoon salt
Sweet potatoes
2 medium sweet potatoes (about 1
pounds), sliced into small, -inch
cubes
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoons salt

Natures Pathways | January 2016

Avocado sauce
2 avocados, sliced into long strips
2 limes, juiced
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium jalapeo, deseeded,
membranes removed and roughly
chopped
1 handful cilantro leaves
teaspoon ground coriander, optional
Salt, to taste
Everything else
1 (14-ounce) can black beans, rinsed
and drained, or 1 cups cooked black
beans
cup crumbled feta (Omit for vegan/
dairy-free salad)
cup pepitas (green pumpkin seeds)

Instructions:

1. To cook quinoa: First rinse the

quinoa in a fine mesh colander under

running water for a minute or two.
In a medium-sized pot, combine the

rinsed quinoa and 2 cups water. Bring

the mixture to a gentle boil, then cover
the pot, reduce heat to a simmer and
cook for 15 minutes. Remove the
quinoa from heat and let it rest, still
covered, for 5 minutes. Uncover the
pot, drain off any excess water and
fluff the quinoa with a fork. Set aside
to cool.
2. To cook the sweet potatoes: In a

large skillet, warm the olive oil over

medium heat. Add the chopped sweet
potatoes and toss to coat, then add the
cumin, smoked paprika and salt. Stir
to combine. Once the pan is sizzling,
add a scant cup water, then cover
the pan and reduce heat to low to
avoid burning the contents. Cook,
stirring occasionally, until the sweet
potato is tender and cooked through,
about 10 minutes.

3. Uncover the pan, raise the heat back

to medium and cook until the excess

moisture has evaporated and the
sweet potatoes are caramelizing on
the edges, about 3 to 7 minutes (add
another little splash of olive oil if the
potatoes start sticking to the pan).
Set aside to cool.

4. To prepare the kale: Transfer the

kale to a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle

the chopped kale with salt and use
your hands to massage it, which
improves the flavor. Grab handfuls of
kale in your hands and scrunch it up
in your palms. Repeat until the kale
is darker green in color and more
fragrant. Whisk together 2 tablespoons olive oil, the juice of 1 lime
and teaspoon salt. Drizzle over the
kale and toss to coat.

5. To make the avocado sauce: Simply

combine the ingredients as listed in

a food processor or blender. Blend
well and season with salt to taste.

6. To toast the pepitas: In a small skillet

over medium-low heat, toast the

pepitas, stirring frequently until
they are turning lightly golden on
the edges and starting to make little
popping noises, about 3 to 5 minutes.

7. Once the quinoa has cooled down a

bit, pour it into the bowl of kale and

toss to combine. Divide the kale and
quinoa mixture into four large salad
bowls. Top with sweet potatoes, black
beans, a big dollop of avocado sauce,
and a sprinkle of feta and pepitas.

Acai
Euterpe oleracea
........................................

he acai palm tree, native to tropical Central and South America,

produces a reddish-purple berry.
The acai berrys name, which comes from a
language of the native people of the region,
means fruit that cries. The acai berry has
long been an important food source for
indigenous peoples of the Amazon region,
who also use acai for a variety of healthrelated purposes.
Acai berry products have become
popular in the United States, where they
have been marketed as folk or traditional
remedies for weight loss and anti-aging
purposes, but there is no definitive scientific evidence to support these claims. Acai
fruit pulp has been used experimentally
as an oral contrast agent for magnetic

resonance imaging (MRI) of the gastrointestinal tract.

Acai berry products are available as
juices, powders, tablets and capsules.

What the science says

There is no definitive scientific evidence

based on studies in humans to support
the use of acai berry for any health-related
purpose.
No independent studies have been
published in peer-reviewed journals that
substantiate claims that acai supplements
alone promote rapid weight loss. Researchers who investigated the safety profile of an
acai-fortified juice in animals observed that
there were no body weight changes in rats
given the juice compared with controls.

Laboratory studies have focused on

acai berrys potential antioxidant properties (antioxidants are substances that are
thought to protect cells from damaging
effects of chemical reactions with oxygen).
Laboratory studies also have shown that
acai berries demonstrate anti-cancer and
anti-inflammatory activity.

Side effects and cautions

There is little reliable information about

the safety of acai as a supplement. It is
widely consumed as an edible fruit or as a
juice.
People who are allergic to acai or to
plants in the Arecaceae (palm) family
should not consume acai.
Consuming acai might affect MRI test
results. If you use acai products and are
scheduled for an MRI, check with your
health care provider.
Tell all your health care providers about
any complementary health approaches you
use. Give them a full picture of what you
do to manage your health. This will help
ensure coordinated and safe care.

Healthy
habits that
can have
a lasting
impact
....................................................

long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people.
While a host of factors beyond a persons control, such
as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how
susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there
are many things men and women can do to improve their chances
of living long, healthy lives.
KEEP WORKING. While many working men and women dream

of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and
for all, they might want to think more about a second career
than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry
found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia. While men
and women may want to retire from their professions, finding
second careers or volunteering close to full-time hours may
improve their long-term health and quality of life.
STAY ON YOUR TOES. A healthy diet is a key component of a

healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long

and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health
Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are
considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high
blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk
for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with
age, so men and women aiming for long and healthy lives should
make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives.
www.naturespathways.com

GET YOUR WHOLE GRAINS. Whole grains may be another

key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have

shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent
the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains
and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra
two servings of whole grains per day decreased a persons risk
of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. Thats an important
finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes
have an increased risk of developing Alzheimers disease, a neurodegenerative condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life.
VISIT YOUR PHYSICIAN ANNUALLY IF NOT MORE
FREQUENTLY. While many people, especially those who feel

healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save
your life. Several diseases, including cancer and heart disease, are
more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and
discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early
stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear
may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a
proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection,
which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life.
Healthy habits improve peoples quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and
productive lives.
