Choose your own adventure

The Youth Festival isnt a conference or retreat, but a range
of fun events and inspiring experiences to celebrate the
Catholic Church. Your participation is up to you, but be sure
not to miss any opportunities.

INFORMATION

How do I participate in ACYF15?

Like many other festivals, the Australian Catholic Youth

Festival is a choose your own adventure type of experience.
You determine whom you see and what you do. Take time
to look at this program, learn about the presenters and
performers you might like to see, topics you hear about, or
experiences you might like to be a part of, and make plans
to get involved. You cant pre-register or save a spot in any of
the workshops and experiences, so get in early. If you miss
out, there are over 200 other activities associated with the
Festival so just find the next thing! Where possible, try and
experience something new or something you havent done in
a while.
Every morning and evening we come together as a national
community in the plenary sessions to learn, laugh and celebrate
together. Get your seat early for warm up fun and music.
The people you meet
The Festival is also about more than whats in the program.
Its about the people you meet and encounter. There are
thousands of like-minded young people and adults here at
the Youth Festival learning, questioning and celebrating their
faith. The Festival is a safe place for you to ask questions
and converse with people about whats going on for you. So
get out there and chat with other young people, leaders,
priests and religious, or any of the Bishops.

interviews), a chill-out space and more. Check out the

INcounter map and list of stalls on page 32 and 33.

listen to great speakers, ask questions and participate in
a variety of fun and powerful experiences. Check out the

Sacred Space
City Rooms
The Festival offers a range of prayer opportunities and
experiences. To make the most of these experiences, a
Sacred Space has been established in the City Rooms. The
space has a chapel, prayer experiences and reconciliation.
Make time during the Festival to visit the Sacred Space
and take time out with God. Reconciliation is available for
the whole time the Festival is open.
Xchange
Riverbank Rm 4
Xchange is a space where young people, bishops and other
Church leaders can come together to listen to one another
and engage in open discussion and dialogue.
There are eleven Xchange conversations each with a
particular topic. It is hoped that through this exchange
there will be a greater mutual understanding and insight and
that this will create catalysts for ongoing dialogue during and
after the Festival. Each session will involve an introduction
to the topic, small group discussion, sharing of stories and
questions, and concluding comments. The Xchange topics
and times are listed over the page for you to get involved in.

INFORMATION

Thursday 3 December
4.30pm Care for Our Common Home: The Call to
Ecological Conversation
Pope Francis has called us to be protectors of creation. Yet
around Australia and the world, our natural environment is
being destroyed at astronomical rates. What do you think
about this? Have you experienced this in your community?
Come and discuss your thoughts and what we can do
together with Church leaders.
6.00pm #thedigitalcontinent #thedigitalchurch
We are connected to the rest of the world by the push of a
button. We are influenced by our peers on social media and
the characters on our favourite TV series. Pope Francis has
asked us to be missionaries in the digital continent. We
need to speak up! What is this digital continent? How can we
mould the messages of popular culture for the good of all?
7.30pm 100% Respect: Relationships and Sexuality
We will explore our experiences of building relationships
in 2015. How do we build relationships and why are
relationships important to us? What are our experiences of
the teachings on sexuality in current society? How do we
respect the dignity of every person that we meet?
Friday 4 December
12.00pm A Place at the Table: Including Everyone in Liturgy
Sharing the Eucharist together is an important part of our
faith community and by including young people in our
liturgy we illustrate that we have a place within the church.
There are a variety of ministries within the church where
young people are already engaged, and many situations
where young people feel disenfranchised. We will share,
listen and find actions to make our church a place for
everyone.

INFORMATION

1.30pm Reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait

Islander Peoples
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have a diverse
history and culture in Australia. Today, a disconnect can
be found in our communities which has called for us to be
a generation of relationship building and to show deeper
respect. Genuine listening to our brothers and sisters is an
integral step in ensuring that our Church and community is
a place that models reconciliation.
3.00pm Global Poverty and Ethical Consumption
There are 1.2 billion people around the world living in
extreme poverty. We can end this injustice within our
generation. Jesus calls us to not only serve those most
in need, but stand in solidarity with these people. Young
people have been responding to this call in different ways
so lets get together and share what we are already doing,
and ways we could possibly be doing more.
4.30pm Boundless Plains to Share? Welcoming Asylum
Seekers and Refugees
Around the world people are being displaced due to conflict
and persecution. Each of these people have a story of
family, friends, and culture, which has not been reflected
in the national conversation around asylum seekers and
refugees. There are currently thousands of young people in
immigration detention with restricted access to the basic
freedom and rights that we enjoy each day. Be a part of
this discussion looking at how we are responding to the
most vulnerable peoples.

INFORMATION

Saturday 5 December
12.00pm Our Experience of Family
Our family has a substantial impact on the people we
are and will grow into. Our families come in all different
shapes and sizes. This space will give a chance to share the
struggles and joys of our families.
1.30pm What Am I Even Doing? Discerning Our Place and
Vocation
Each person has his or her own mission and calling in the
world from God. Figuring it out can be the tricky part! The
world is full of distractions and pressures. How do we focus
on what we are being called to do? How do we listen to
our calling when there is so much happening around us?
And how can we as a Church, continue to be place that
encourages everyone to find their vocation in this current
landscape?
3.00pm You Matter Absolutely! Mental Health and Wellbeing
For many young people, their lives are a juggling act!
Having steady mental health and wellbeing is crucial to
being able to live a healthy and happy life but the reality
is that three million Australians are living with depression
or anxiety, and around 1 in 4 Australians aged 16 to 24
experience a mental health condition. Why does it happen?
What can we be doing to combat it? This issue impacts our
friends and our families, and we need you to share with
each other about it.
4.30pm What are Welcoming Parishes?
Our parishes should be places of welcome and communities
that encourage everyone to join with us in our mission with
God! This session will allow us to listen to the ways we
currently organise ourselves in parish life, and explore the
different ways we can be working together locally.
