Senior Hydrogeologist

Hydrogeological Consultants Ltd. (HCL) has conducted groundwater investigations throughout Alberta since
1969. Today, HCL continues to serve a diverse client base, including all three levels of government, agriculture
and industry, with its original mandate: to provide experts capable of investigating any aspect of groundwater.
Position Overview
The Senior Hydrogeologist will ensure that the hydrogeological data acquired and analyzed by HCL will meet or
exceed industry standards for the purposes of evaluation, appraisal and development; monitor the work of Project
Managers; supervise and mentor junior and intermediate technical staff; ensure high-quality data are produced;
and be accountable for accurate record-keeping and regulatory compliance. The Senior Hydrogeologist will also
be a key person with regard to client liaison, acquiring new clients and the overall direction of the business.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee, train, mentor and work with technical staff

Oversee detailed analysis and interpretation of hydrogeological data

Create accurate aquifer maps, stratigraphic correlations and structural cross-sections to ensure the
groundwater resource can be effectively managed

Study and analyze the physical aspects of the earth in terms of the hydrogeological components

Evaluate data and provide recommendations regarding the feasibility of proposed projects

Prepare and adhere to realistic budgets for a variety of project types

Prepare and review hydrogeological reports

Complete hydrogeological studies in support of groundwater diversion applications under the Water Act

Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current hydrogeological practices and technology

Provide hydrogeological support in the development of new business plans/studies

Oversee and/or conduct field work as required

Comply with company policy and procedures, including occupational health and safety policies

Other duties as required

Qualifications (education and/or experience, certification required, specific skills)

Bachelors degree* or better in Geosciences or Engineering

Masters degree* in Geosciences or Engineering an asset

Registered or eligible to be a professional member with APEGA*

Minimum of 15 years experience in the private sector

Previous project management experience required

Previous field experience required

Strong knowledge of the principles and methods used in hydrogeological analyses

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software suites, Surfer, ESRI ArcGIS

Familiarity with databases (e.g. SQL, Microsoft Access)

Ability to research and analyze information and draw valid conclusions

Ability to prepare and adhere to realistic budgets for a variety of project types

Excellent planning and organizational skills

Strong verbal and written English language skills

Sound technical background (hands-on) with logical deductive reasoning approach

Interest in developing technical skills through both internal and external training

Conviction to improve personally and support continuous improvement in the company

Ability to work independently and take initiative

High level of personal integrity and a strong work ethic

Professional, mature demeanor under stressful situations

Valid drivers license

Legally permitted to work in Canada*

Work Conditions

Overtime and weekends may be required

Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals

Lifting or moving up to 20 Kg. required

Some travel and field work required

Ability to attend and conduct presentations.

May be exposed to hazards associated with field work

May be required to wear personal protective equipment

Must be able to meet the companys safety requirements

Work Environment
Job duties carried out primarily in the Edmonton office, with field work to be done as needed
