THE FAITHFUL RECEIVE THE BLESSED, HOLY WATER IN THEIR SMALL BOTTLES THAT THEY WILL TAKE HOME WITH WHICH THEY
WILL BLESS THEIR HOUSE AND HOUSEHOLD AND OF WHICH THEY WILL PARTAKE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
FOR THE PRIESTS BLESSINGS OF OUR HOMES, WE ARE TO CONSULT WITH OUR PARISH PRIEST WHO WILL ADVISE WHEN HE
INTENDS DOING SO, THEN WE ARE TO ENSURE THAT AS MANY MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD ARE PRESENT TO
WELCOME HIM AND TO RECEIVE HIS BLESSINGS.
THE HOLY WATER WE RECEIVE ON THIS DAY, SHOULD BE KEPT AT OUR PRAYER CORNERS, TOGETHER WITH OUR HOLY
ICONS. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, IT MAY BE TOPPED UP WITH FRESH WATER, BEING SANCTIFIED BY THE ORIGINAL
BLESSED WATER.
IT IS GOOD TO BEGIN OUR DAY WITH THREE SIPS OF HOLY WATER IN THE NAME OF THE HOLY TRINITY.

PR IEST
OF THE

Holy Water is water that has been specially Blessed by an Ordained Orthodox
Bishop or Priest and Sanctified by the Holy Spirit for use in the Holy Rites of the
Eastern Orthodox Church of Christ, including the Holy Mystery of Baptism, the
Blessing of people, places and objects or as a means of repelling evil.
A quantity of Holy Water is usually kept in a font that is placed near the entrance
of the church where it is freely available for those who need it.
Holy Water is sometimes sprinkled on items or people as a Blessing or as part of
the Prayers of Blessing. (For example, fishing boats are sprinkled with Holy
Water at the start of the fishing season - and even spaceships before
launching while the Celebrant Priest prays for the safety and success of those
who travel therein.)
Orthodox Christians most often Bless themselves with Holy Water by taking three
sips each morning after their Prayers, which makes a good start to each day.
Holy Water may also be used for informal Blessings when no Clergy is present. (For
example: parents may Bless their children with Holy Water before they leave
the house for school or play.)
The use of Holy Water is based on the Great Event of Holy Theophany the
Baptism of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, by St John the Baptist and
Forerunner in the River Jordan.
According to Orthodox Christian belief, St John the Baptists Baptism was a Baptism
of Repentance, and the people went to him to have their sins washed away.
However, since our Saviour, Jesus Christ, was absolutely sinless, and was Himself
Divine being One Person of the Holy Trinity - His Immersion (Baptism)
Sanctified and Blessed the water making it useful for its original Purpose as
an Instrument of Life.
The Great Blessing of Water is held on the Eve of Theophany 5 January - and/or
on the Feast of Theophany 6 January after the Divine Liturgy.
The Great Blessing of Water commemorates our Lord Jesus Christs Baptism, the
Revelation of the Holy Trinity and the Orthodox belief that all Creation is
Sanctified (made Holy) by Christ Himself Who is the Almighty Creator of the
Universe.
Our Lords Baptism is commemorated in the Orthodox Church on 6 January the
Feast of Theophay (meaning God shining forth)
At Vespers of Theophany, a Font of Holy Water is Blessed, which provides Holy
Water for the requirements of the Parish throughout the year.
The following morning in some Parishes the Prayers often include a trip to a
nearby river, lake or other public source of drinking water, to Bless that water
as well.
This represents the Redemption of all Creation as part of humanitys Salvation.
In the following weeks, the Priest visits the homes of the Parishioners to Bless their
entire household by sprinkling them with Holy Water while reciting particular
Prayers.
This Blessing visibly represents our Lord Gods Sanctifying Work in all parts of our
lives.
Holy Water can also be Blessed at any other time of the year if there is a need, and
this is usually done on the first day of the month particularly if it falls on a
Sunday.

OF THE
3.
The Sanctified Water of the Holy Mystery of Baptism is Blessed during the Holy
Service of Baptism and is later poured upon the earth never in the sewerage
system!
On the Feast of Holy Theophany, the water is Blessed twice at the conclusion of
the Divine Liturgy of 5 January and 6 January.
After processing to the Soleas where the vessel of water is prepared, to the singing
of appropriate Feast Troparia, several Holy Scripture passages are read,
culminating in the reading of the Gospel According to St Mark (1:9-11), which
relates the Baptism of Christ, followed by the Great Litany, which is chanted
just as for the Divine Liturgy, but with the addional Petitions that make it
perfectly clear what is being asked of Almighty God and what the use, Purpose
and Blessing of the Water is believe to entail.
Following lengthy didactic Prayers that expound the nature of the Great Feast and
which summarise our Salvation history, praising Gods Creation of and mastery
over the elements, the Priest makes the Sign of the Cross over the water with his
hand and prays specifically for the Blessing to be invoked upon it.
At the climax of the Service, the Priest immerses the Blessing Cross into the water
three times in imitation of Christs Baptism in the River Jordan, to the chanting
of the Festal Troparion, after which he Blesses the entire church and
congregation with the newly Consecrated Water.
The Blessing of the Water begins with the chanting of special Hymns, with the
censing of the water, and concluded with Scripture Readings, Petitions and
Prayers.
The water is held in a large container in the middle of the Soleas, or the Holy
Service might even be held at a freely flowing natural source.
If the Service of the Blessing is celebrated indores, the container of water may be
decorated with candles and flowers, symbolising the great Beauty of Gods
original Creation through His Word and His Spirit.
During the Holy Service, a Blessing Cross is dipped three times into the water.
After the Blessing Service the Faithful fill their containers so as to take some Holy
Water home with them.
This water is also used to Bless homes during the Theophany season.
Water is seen b the Church as the prime element of Creation. In Blessing water, it
is asked of God that the original Purpose of water as a source of life, Blessing
and Holiness be revealed when we drink it.
In the Book of Genesis, Creation began when the Spirit of God moved over the
face of the waters.
In the Blessing of Water, it is seen that the world and everything in it is very good,
and when it becomes corrupted, God Saves it once more by effecting the New
Creation in Christ, His Divine, Eternal Son and our Lord by the Grace of the
Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:31 & Galatians 6: 15)
The celebration of the Great Blessing of Water is an affirmation that through our
Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christs own Baptism, He lifted the Curse of Adams sin
of Disobedience and has once again granted the Creative Goodness of Gods
Creation to mankind.
Therefore, when Christians are Baptised, we are Baptised into Christ we become
part of the Creation that is Sanctified in Christ.
