Abstract:
As we enter the 21st century, humanity faces enormous challenges in the sustainability of our
current lifestyles and systems. There are a number of critical global environmental issues
including energy, pollution, transportation, agriculture, land use, construction, water access
and use, and ecological destruction. Green manufacturing is a subset of green engineering.
Environmentally friendly machining is a part of green manufacturing. It is included in the
concept of sustainable manufacturing, which considers economical and social concerns in
addition to environmental concerns.
Introduction:
Over a decade, there has been a renewed focus on the impact of organizations and
manufacturing on the natural environment. Increasingly, stakeholders including regulators,
customers, shareholders, board members, and employees are asking or requiring
organizations to be more environmentally responsible with respect to their products and
processes. Research on the impact of environmental practices on organizational outcomes is
somewhat inconclusive. Some researchers have found that environmental initiatives may
have a negative impact on company performance. Every day, engineers and scientists make
technical decisions which have significant impact on the environment. Sometimes these
decisions lead us to the sustainability .
objectives of reducing emission of greenhouse gases, avoiding use of non renewable or toxic
materials, and avoiding generation of waste.
In a keynote paper, Westkamper et al. (2000) have listed the following five critical
factors that the world is confronting:
1. A rising consumption of natural resources
2. The dramatic increase in world population
3. Environmental impacts, i.e., limited natural resources (energy, materials)
4. Global communication networks based on standards
5. An unstoppable worldwide globalization
To overcome these factors, there is a need to switch over to sustainable manufacturing. The
term sustainability is often used to cover environmental issues. As a result of the UN General
Assembly resolutions, the World Commission on Environment and Development was set up.
The commission published a report entitled Our Common Future, which is commonly
known as Brundtland report.
Areas of application:
1.Lean manufacturing here main focus is on reduction of the material handling time so
that the efficiency increased.
2.product design-when a product is initially designed at that time need to think of the
recycled materials .so that the reuse of the product is possible.
3.Green chemistry-Main aim is to reduce the toxic product which coming out from the
manufacturing industry.
4.this techlology is now mainly used by the automobile industry.
Benifits:
Although it has lot of benefits ,some are environmental benefits, company benefits and
technological benefits.as the waste is less ,it shows impact on the environment .due to some
social responsibility of the company ,company got some reputation to produce good product
which is environment friendly .in the journey of this we have to develop lot of new things ,so
we can replace the older technology and implement new one which is much more good than
its predecessor.
