ISSUE: Teachers Negative Attitude

INTRODUCTION
Education emphasizes the quality and excellence of the individual. Availability of quality
education will raise the dignity of the individual person. In reaching effort to comply with
quality education, the quality of a teacher is to be emphasized. Developments in the
world's great challenges to teachers in personal form and pupils themselves in order to
become a useful person. Whether consciously or unconsciously, a teacher's shoulder a
great responsibility in creating a man who can help the country get better.

'Teachers are honorable, progressive and scientific ready uphold the aspirations of the
country and holding national cultural heritage, ensure the development of the individual
and maintain a communityunited, democratic, progressive and disciplined '.
(Philosophy Teacher Education)

So the aim of teacher education is to produce quality teachers in terms of

personal, social and professional practice good behavior. Teachers should also be able
to master the knowledge, skills and practice the teaching of values. Even the high
expectations seeks to achieve educational excellence for charging demands insight into
21st century education so teachers should have the appropriate personality.
Teacher is a professional. This means that the teacher is the one who got special
training, knowledgeable and expert in their respective fields and have their own code of
ethics. According to Ornstein and Levine (1993), a professional concept refers to the
feature - which are among the members of a profession. Among the features - features
that have been mentioned are efficient and have enough knowledge in their respective
fields and the code of ethics governing the conduct of members.

Based on the characteristics of the profession, Soon Sang Mok (1996)

summarizes briefly the concept of professionalism as a special job and run by people
who have qualifications and adequate professional training quality, honesty, dedication,
responsibility and high moral values, has a duty and outonomi comply with the code of
ethics prescribed by the organization. Professionalism of teachers is crucial in
education. Education is the institution responsible for providing future. The education
system should be designed carefully to suit the likely challenges that will arise.
As an educator who is responsible, teachers today have to realize that the task
and the mandate given was to educate a generation that will menerajuai country.
Therefore the skills and knowledge of those methods of education should be improved
from time to time. To face the challenges and demands of changes in the curriculum,
teachers must strive to equip themselves with strategies for teaching and learning in the
room.
In connection with the requirements of the teachers should follow educational
courses organized by the Ministry of Education, the State Education Department and
the District Education Office. For example, teachers can attend in-service courses or
courses Enhanced Teaching Professionalism. Education courses attended important for
a teacher to enhance the capabilities and performance of the teaching profession more
challenging and complex. Given the education needs to support the government's
efforts, the teaching profession is expected to make a paradigm shift to a knowledgebased culture and thinking (Rohani Abdul Hamid, 1998).

2.0 ETHICAL ISSUE: Teachers Negative Attitude

Teachers negative attitude violate the code, 4.(2)(g); an officer cannot be irresponsible
The issue I am trying to highlight is the issue of teachers' concern that I read in a
magazine; EDUCATORS, March 2008. According to the article I read, teachers attitude
affect students performance. The article stated several behaviours:

Showing Dislike to Students: Liking the students certainly cannot be acted out
because the event occurred spontaneously and naturally. If the teacher loves students it
can create a harmonious relationship, the teacher can control the behaviour of their
students. Teachers should make time to talk with students if they have a chance. This is
done to identify problem students and get information about the abilities and interests of
students.
Not Recognising the Students: Some teachers find it too hard to remember
names and recognize the behavior of their students. let alone, the number of students
and teachers of different classes cause sometimes mistakenly called the name of that
one disciple. Therefore, a teacher must be more innovative in finding solutions to these
problems.
Labelling: Every student is different from each other not only in terms of gender
and even in terms of physical and emotional background. These differences should not
be a reason for teachers to label or title to their students. If a student teacher label,
meaning it should have good and sounds good. Title to satirize or humiliate the student
accordingly avoided because it may demoralize students.
Humiliating and Belittling: As a teacher, we must act as a catalyst to students.
Teachers are always sarcastic and humiliating students will be hated by the students
involved. The action of the teachers will be degrading and its should not be performed
by individuals who we called teachers.
Excessive

Punishment:

School

disciplinary rules

have

been

planned

accordingly. Therefore, teachers should consider before punishing students. Penalties

and fines for disciplinary offenses of students and teachers have been assigned to meet
everything that was outlined in the rules of discipline. If teachers act outrageous,
students may experience trauma and fear.
Too Fierce: Teachers should have a caring attitude so that they will be favored
by students. Teachers who are fierce will scare the students. They will be nervous to ask
questions because fear of being scolded. Students will also feel afraid to go to the
classroom and affect their concentration in class.

Discrimination: The attitude of teachers who practice favoritism is not fair. A

student can feel the difference of affection and attention given to them by their teachers.
Attention and equal treatment can give pleasure to the students. Favoritism occurs due
to various student levels.Students will not respect the teachers who practice favoritism.

3.0 Factors of Issue

In my view, there are several reasons for teachers negative attitude towards students,
they are:
3.1 Teaching is Not the Chosen Field
Field of teaching as a career is often considered the last resort for some people.
Some graduates who were asked about their career choices, many of them provided
answers that nearly matching that the field of teaching is their last option. Everyone
thinks that without basic training they can still be a backup or temporary teachers, and
at times better than existing teachers.
Basically the teaching profession since then, now and forever is the same, namely to
teach, educate and change the students of the state who did not know letters, not
knowing how to count and cannot read, to be someone successful (Shuib & Johari,
2001). However, because there is no interest in the teaching profession and lazy
attitude and does not care causing a teacher to be less committed in the the job, no
noble values in life and poor work ethics. When this attitude exists, then the individual
take lightly the task that has been entrusted to the extent that there is no sense of
responsibility - indeed in educating our children and what's important to them is just a
salary to be received on a monthly basis.
3.2 Lack of Monitoring from the Administration.
The next factor is from the administration. Weak enforcement and the lack of
monitoring conducted have led to the occurrence of this problem. When there is no

monitoring and the enforcement are weak, then the teachers become aggressive in
displaying negative attitude, they think that they are superior.
These problems if left unchecked will cause a devastating effect on many people,
including teachers as professionals and students - students. Among the visible effects of
this problem is the decline in teacher performance and student achievement at the
school. The public will also be cynical and do not believe teaching profession with the
ability of teachers to teach a child - their child.

4.0 Solution of Problem

Through my reading, this issue can be contained with the government and school
authorities in fostering excellent teacher personality.
4.1 Monitoring from the Administrative
Administrators should always monitor from time to time on the performance of
the teachers at the school. With the continuous monitoring, the teachers wont be given
an opportunity to carry out negative behavior as they know that they sre being
monitored. The administrator may impose such disciplinary action for teachers involved
in the offense this behavior. In addition, administrators can also provide advice to
teachers through counseling sessions.
4.2 Assistance from Colleagues
Colleagues also have to play a role in addressing this issue. Counterparts should
be an example to partners in trouble giving advice and encouragement so that the
teachers involved in negative behavior can be changed to be better. Support from the
people around is very important as a catalyst for teachers to do things better.
4.3 Rewards to Teachers
Apart from enhancing themselves by improvements in the fields of knowldge,
educators also offered

rewards and promotions to those who really deserve. For

example, excellent teachers to recognize the sacrifice of the teachers were really
committed to the tasks assigned, the rewards given to them by recognizing them as
excellent teachers. Excellent concept introduced by the Ministry of Education a reward
to teachers by being dedicated and highly motivated and have the skills and expertise of
their duties. Without waiting for a promotion by "Time-Based", they can be raised red
keg higher than DGA6 (DGA29) to DGA5 (DGA32)
4.4. Reduce Placement of Untrained Teachers in the Field
Vacancies in secondary and even primary schools are usually filled by temporary
teachers who are not formally trained either in college or university. We cannot deny the
need to fill the vacancy on the basis of the education of students in the school. But the
public's view of the teaching profession will decrease when there are some people who
think without attending teacher training in certain places, they can still become a
teacher. The vacancies of teachers in secondary schools should be filled with the
presence of teachers who have completed their studies on a part-time or distance
learning.

5.0 Summary
The school is a cultural agency and part of the teaching function is to produce cultural
values. Thus, the process of socialization of students is a legitimate and positive
function to be controlled by the school. According to Durkheim, the role of moral
education teachers and school assignments is to teach students about human values
and community. He believes that the family is too small and too personal to describe the
elements of the overall social system. Also, assume his teacher as a main agent and a
critical link in the process of cultural flows.
The teaching profession is a very noble profession. Services and the contribution
of teachers to society of knowledge, faith and practice good values should not be looked
down upon by society. Selection of the profession as a last line of endeavor is a

misconception. The community should be aware of the challenges and workload faced
by teachers before taking the easy way to underestimate this group.

Teachers also need to carry out its role as the person who is closest to the
students while students are in school. Therefore teachers must carry out its role as a
surrogate parent. This is important because a close relationship will issue student
respect for teachers or others in the school. Students will feel appreciated and cared for.
Therefore, there will not be any students consider their attendance at school seems
unnoticed by others. This will prevent them from committing vandalism because he
wanted to impress their friends or teachers.
Therefore, efforts to produce quality teachers, committed and dedicated to be
continued while the affairs of their welfare needs to be maintained in line with the
government's confidence and belief that education is a means of effective development
of human capital. Other capital such as money, technology and buildings may not be
perfect if not anchored in human capital. Thus, the concept of democratization that
gives fair and equal opportunities to all citizens get quality education is examined and
given proper attention. Education Ministry's efforts to elevate the profession should be
highly regarded.
