Notes
General
Just Intonation

Specific sonorities in this piece ask for the performance of intervals based on the harmonic series. These sonorities ask for 3 kinds of microtones
in particular, to approximate:
5th partial: lowered by a 1/12th of a tone, or ~16 cents
7th partial: lowered by a 1/6th of a tone, or ~33 cents
11th partial: lowered by a 1/4th of a tone, or ~50 cents

Winds
Timbral changes

The flute part asks for tone-production on the following spectrum: air aeolian
(mixed air-pitch) ord
(normal tone quality)
The marking f.t. indicates flutter tongue.
The marking tongue roll indicates a rolled tongue effect, without air, that produces a non-pitched trill of sorts
The marking bisb. tr. indicates bisbigliando trill, or tone-color trill
The marking beating vib. indicates vibrato and asks for a relatively quick and subtle vibrato that mimics the sound of beatings that result from
close frequencial dissonances

Piano
Muted strings

Plus-signs ( + ) above a pitch ask for the pianist to mute the string in front of the damper and strike the key with force. This should
produce a thud-like, bell-like sonority, though perfectly clear in pitch.

Harmonics
The piece asks for specific piano harmonics, most of which relate to ensemble sonorities. These sonorities are based on harmonic
series intervals of the fundamentals A0, Bb0, C2, E1, and Ab1 (in order of appearance. Strive for a sound that resembles most
closely the isolated partial, as devoid of the fundamental as possible (though not completely). Let ring with the assistance of sustain
pedal.

Percussion
All of the material is performed on a ride cymbal. The primary techniques are:
Mallets
Roll on any part of the cymbal under the bell, unless otherwise indicated (i.e. Roll on Bell)
> Bell Roll asks the percussionist to begin rolling on the lower part of the cymbal and then move up to the bell

Soft hit either on the bell or the lower part of the cymbal

Brushes:
Slide: use the metal end of the brush-stick to scrape the cymbal in a sweeping gesture

Soprano
The piece asks for both sung material and timbral extensions thereof, based on the following syllables:
[ ah ] : basic sung syllable
[ f ] : indicates air-sweep, which mimics a wind-like sound that often accompanies air-sound from flute/clarinet and rolled cymbal texture
produced by an O-shaped mouth
con vib. and senza vib. ask for vibrato or straight-tone respectively

Strings
Timbral changes

sul pont, indicated by s.p., should produce a mixed sonority of a pitchs fundamental and upper partials.
molto sul pont, indicated by m.s.p., should produce a sonority that is predominantly the upper partials of a pitch.
sul tasto, indicated by s.t., asks for bowing towards the fingerboard to mute higher partials.
molto sul tasto, indicated by m.s.t., asks for bowing high up on the fingerboard to produce an extremely hollow sound.
on the bridge, indicated by o.b., should produce an audible but pitchless sonority similar to white noise.
NOTE: When playing on the bridge, increase in dynamics should be accompanied by an increase in bow pressure to give more presence
to the sound.
