EKC 475 WASTE WATER TREATMENT ENGINEERING

1. INTRODUCTION
One of the most popular biological treatment nowadays is using aerobic active sludge process.
By increasing pressure to catch up to certain value of pressure has led to implemented of variety
of advanced biological treatment process. This practice has been practice in the Indah Water
Consortium SDN BHD in Ulu Kinta, Perak. In this waste water treatment plant, they practice
extended aeration technique that using air and chemical to treat the waste water.

2. TREATMENT PROCESS

Figure 2.1 shows the process flow diagram for INDAH WATER waste water plant.
In this waste water treatment, they consist of three stage of treatment which is preliminary
treatment, secondary treatment and tertiary treatment. The purpose of doing this are to make
sure all large waste is being separated from the waste water and to make sure the process
efficiency is high as possible.

3. PRE-LIMINARY TREATMENT
The main purpose of the preliminary treatment is to separate large particle from the waste
water. This can be achieve by applying filter and grit removal to remove any substance that
can clog or damage the waste water treatment plant.

3.1.1. GRIT REMOVAL

The function of this unit is to remove solid particle in the waste water. Usually
this unit come with screening process. Screening process will remove all rubbish
and large solid material and grit removal will remove the small particle inside the
waste water.

4. SECONDARY TREATMENT
In secondary treatment, they are using biological treatment method. The method that they are
applying on that place is extended aeration. In this reaction, they using batch reactor unit to
conduct the process. The process that are involve in the batch reactor are filling, react, settling
and draw. In filling process, waste water will be filled inside the batch tank, then aerated it with
certain times. Next is reaction where the biological organic pollutant will be remove.
Furthermore, some catalyst may be added into the waste water to improve the reaction rate.
After the solid settling down, draw the solid mixture from the waste water.

5. TERTIARY TREATMENT
Basically in this section, they will do the purification of the waste water by using chlorination,
de-chlorination, sludge disposal and waste management. In the sludge holding tank, they are
collecting the sludge and send it to the sanitary landfill. As for the drying bed, it used to remove
the water from the sludge. In this way, the collected sludge will be less heavy than before.

7. OPERATIONAL ISSUES

7.1. Odour issues

Usually this problem may happen in most biological waste water treatment plant.
This is because some of methane gas may be release and also the sludge produce
need to be transport quickly to sanitary landfill. To improve the environment of the
plant, they locate the plant far from residential area.
