In the year 2000 there were only about 50 in the area, by the end of
2008 they had increased to more than 1000. Now these thousand odd
blackbucks roam the fields, destroying crops and ruining the livelihood
of several farmers in Karopani and surrounding areas.
Villagers are now asking the government either to relocate the
animals or declare the area as protected under the relevant provisions of
the Wildlife Protection Act and compensate the people.
Earlier farmers in the area would grow two to three crops a year now
with difficulty they are able to save one crop. As one farmer put it “ For

I agree with the fact that Indians often shy away from world travel. However you need to realise
that it is not that NZ Indians do not want to travel around the world. Given a choice of 3 to 4
weeks of annual pay and parents who are tucked away thousands of miles away, the heart rules
over the head and you invariably make the same trip over and over again. For Indians living
