Bhopal: Residents of the Karopani village in Dindori, Madhya Pradesh
have a strange tale to narrate of their conservation efforts. They risked
their lives and gave up agricultural land to nurture the blackbucks in
their area. The blackbucks thrived so well that they are now ruining the
crops and threatening the livelihood of the villagers.
In the year 2000 there were only about 50 in the area, by the end of
2008 they had increased to more than 1000. Now these thousand odd
blackbucks roam the fields, destroying crops and ruining the livelihood
of several farmers in Karopani and surrounding areas.
Villagers are now asking the government either to relocate the
animals or declare the area as protected under the relevant provisions of
the Wildlife Protection Act and compensate the people.
Earlier farmers in the area would grow two to three crops a year now
with difficulty they are able to save one crop. As one farmer put it “ For
whom should we grow more crops, for the blackbucks?”
