THE ART OF ANCIENT INDIA: Buddhist, Hindu and Jain
Susan L. Huntington
Huntington,, with contributions by John C.
Huntington
The works and monuments included in this volume have been selected
not only for their artistic merit but also in order to both provide
general coverage and include transitional works that furnish the key
to an all encompassing view of the art. An outstanding portrayal
of ancient Indias highest intellectual and technical achievements,
this volume is written for many audiences : scholars, for whom it
provides an up-to-date backgraund against which to examine their
own areas of study; teachers and students of college level, for whom it supplies a complete
summary of and a resource for their own deeper investigations into Indic art; and curious
readers, for whom it gives a broad-based introduction to this fascinating area of world art.

THE ART OF INDIAN ASIA: Its Mythology and Transformations
Heinrich Zimmer Completed & Ed. by Joseph
( 2 Vols.)Heinrich
Campbell, Photographs by Eliot Elisofon & others
This two-volume work, a unique product of scholarship and
photography, presents a view of Indian Art that is believed to be most
comprehensive ever undertaken. Its text volume approaches the subject
in close detail and in a rapidly moving and entertaining form of
exposition. While the second volume contains the photographs.
The present work is intended not as a handbook but as an
introduction to its subject, to be read from beginning to end. Each
section is preparation for the next. Chapter I, presenting as it does
a brief historical outline of the transformations of Indian art as well as a key to the
symbology of the forms, can be used as a guide during the first perusal of the pictures.
For the reader then wishing to find quickly the several portions of text referring to any
specific group of monuments, a copious index has been supplied, together with textual
references in the Description of Plates and cross-references in the footnotes. Marginal
references to the Plates, furthermore, accompany the text. These should make possible
an easy and rapid correlation of the materials of the two volumes.
The first two group of Plates in the text volume illustrate, for the most part, the
anthropological and comparative observations of the text. Included among them,
however, are a few photographs that are indispensable to Dr. Zimmers argument but
do not meet the aesthetic standard of the Plates volume. On the other hand, the final
cluster of text Plates constitutes an independent pictorial appendix, illustrating the
miniature and Rajpur art of the eleventh to nineteenth centuries A.D. Dr. Zimmers notes
on this subject had not been developed beyond preliminary jottings, and could not
be incorporated in any major section of the text. But since there is actually a rather
special, very delicate, lyric quality about these paintings on palm leaf and paper, which
sets them apart, somewhat, from the tradition of the stone monuments, it is not
inappropriate that they should be given a separate place.

*HALLAS SATTASAI : Gatha Saptasati in Prakrit (Poems on
Tr. from the Prakrit and
Life and Love in Ancient India)
Tr.
Introd. by Peter Khoroche & Herman Tieken
An elegant translation of the Sattasai (or Seven Hundred), Indias
ealiest collection of lyric poetry, Poems on Life and Love in Ancient
India deals with love in its many aspects. Mostly narrated by
women, the poems reveal the world of local Indian village life
sometime between the third and fifth centuries. The Sattasai offers
a more realistic counterpart to that notorious theoretical treatise
on love, the Kamasutra, which presents a cosmopolitan and
calculating milieu. Translators Peter Khoroche and Herman Tieken introduce the main
features of the work in its own language and time. For modern readers, these short,
self-contained poems are a treat: the sentiments they depict remain affecting and
contemporary while providing a window into a world long past.
"These self-contained couplets are as sexy as they are tender; they are lively
and playful, melancholy and hounting, often very funny, and continually
startling."

MERGING
WITH SIVA
The trilogy articulates in lucid terms why you must begin at the
beginning, with a firm foundation of philosophical clarity and
good character, and proceed from there. Dancing with Siva
lays out the philosophical, Vedic-Agamic beliefs, attitudes and
expectations of the Saivite Hindu religion.
Satguru Sivaya
Living with Siva, the second book of the trilogy, explores
Subramuniyaswami
Saivite lifestyle, culture, family life, character-building and the
overcoming of uncomplimentary habits. It focuses on yama, niyama and, in a lesser
way, asana and pranayama (hatha yoga).
Merging with Siva, the third book of the trilogy, encompasses steps five, six
and seven, leading to eightthe deeper realizations, samadhis, yogic experiences
and mystical encounters, such as the inner light and nada-nadi saktiall of which
we begin to experience once we learn to dance with Siva and live Siva. Upon
a solid foundation of understanding, the yogic and metaphysical experiences
described in Merging with Siva come naturally and are sustainable.

NORTHERN FRONTIERS OF BUDDHISM : Buddhist Heritage
of Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kalmykia, Tibet, China,
Mongolia and Siberia Benoy K. Behl
Buddhism has a great vision of the eternal harmony of the world.
This faith, with its message of compassion, spread far and wide and
shaped the culture of a continent. This is a culture of peace and
gentleness which continues, even in the midst of the materialistic
world of today. From earliest times of Buddhism, the influences of
the faith reached Afghanistan, Uzbekistan dna other parts of the
Central Asia. It was both the Theravada and Mahayana orders that
traveled far and wide across this region. Vajrayana Buddhism was
born out of an intellectual search, at the great universities of Eastern India and in
Kashmir, in the First Millennium CE. It is believed to have the clarity and indestructible
nature of a diamond, as well as the striking nature of a thunderbolt. Its purpose is to
free us and to dispel the veils of ignorance, with the force of a clap of thunder. It is
this form of Buddhism which travelled to Tibet, Mongolia, Buryatia and Kalmykia.

*PRIESTS, KINGS, AND WOMEN IN EARLY UPANISHADS
: The Character of the Self in Ancient India Brian Black
This groundbreaking book is an elegant exploration of the
Upanisads, often considered the fountainhead of the rich, varied
philosophical tradition in India. The Upanisads in addition to
their philosophical content have a number of sections that contain
narratives and dialoguesa literary dimension largely ignored by
the Indian philosophical tradition, as well as by modern scholars.
Brian Black draws attention to these literary elements and
demonstrates that they are fundamental to understanding the
philosophical claims of the text.
"Blacks book is well researched and intelligent... Most impressive is his ability
to bring out the concerete and the social in these narratives, including issues
of wealth, prestige, regional rivalry, and gender relation."

India has many versions of the story of
Rama composed in Sanskrit, Prakrit, and
various vernaculars of the north & south.
Yet the ancient Sanskrit version, attributed to the sage-poet Valmiki, by tradition the first work of true poetry, is the
source revered throughout India as the
original account of the career of Rama,
ideal man and incarnation of the great god
Visnu. This great Sanskrit epic of ancient
India has profoundly affected the Literature, Art, Religions and Cultures of countless millions of people in South and Southeast Asiaan influence that is perhaps unparalleled in the history of World Literature. The volumes of this work will present
the entire Ramayana for the first time
translated on the basis of the critical edition, which is based on manuscripts representing all recensional traditions.

A History of
Indian Literature
(3 Vols.)
MAURICE WINTERNITZ
ISBN: 978-81-208-0263-6
(Set) Rs. 2890
Winternitzs major work was Geschichte der
Indischen Literature (History of Indian Literature). The
first volume was published in two parts in 1905 and
1908. It dealt with Vedic literature, the epics and
Puranas. The second volume on Buddhist and Jain
literature appeared in two parts, in 1913 and 1920.
In the last volume, Kavya literature and scientific
literature found a representation. A birds eye
view of the venacular literature of modern India
completed that volume published in 1922. The
value of the work was enhanced by copious notes.
The English translation was revised by Winternitz
himself. The first volume was published in Calcutta
in 1927, the second in 1933. The treatment of Buddhist Sanskrit literature in the English translation
represented a new edition. Winternitz died before
the third volume could be revised. A reprint appeared in Delhi 1983, 1985 and 1987. The present
English Translation is based on the original German work and has been revised in the light of further researches on the subject by different scholars in India and elsewhere.
Volume I : Introduction, Veda, Epics,
Puranas and TantrasTr. V.S. Sarma
This is divided into two sections. Section I relates to Veda (the Four Sahits), Brhmaas,
rayakas, Upaniads, Vedgas and the literature of the Ritual. Section II relates to the study
of two great Epics of Indiathe Rmyaa and
the Mahbhrata. It carries out a general survey
of the Puric literature, and provides ample information about the Tantras too.

INDIAN KVYA
LITERATURE
A. K. WARDER
(8 Vols.)
ISBN : 978-81-208-0445-6 (Set)
Indian Kvya Literature brings us, in the form of
art, a great and characteristic part of epic of human
consciousness, that it becomes worth reading. The
chief interest of this work lies in its literary
criticism to evaluate the great tradition of the

practically unknown to all but a few Sanskritists
[or Indologists]. With the growing popularity of
comparative literature, this work becomes highly
useful as it presents a kaleidoscopic view of the
features of Indian poetics, portraying the
characteristics of the style of every composer in
the real situation of life; in his/her own sociocultural milieu as viewed in the literary panorama
set by the author himself with his vision of Indian
cultural history as a whole.
