STORAGE MANAGEMENT MADE SIMPLE WITH

FIBRECAT SX

Purpose
This composition is intended to introduce students to the basic steps required to
provision FibreCAT SX storage to a Windows Server 2003 R2 server.

Chapter 1: Use the “FibreCAT SX manager” web user interface native to the
FibreCAT SX to provision disk space by:
• creating a virtual disk (also called RAID group)
• creating a volume (also called LUN)
• assigning the volume to the server.
After that, some data is written to the volume.

Chapter 2: Use Windows Server 2003 “R2”’s native “Storage Manager for
SANs” to
• extend a volume and the file system
• create a new volume and assign it to the server.
After that, some data is written to the volume.

Special Instructions:

Before you begin, please record the IP address for the server and the FibreCAT
SX storage array that you have been assigned.

Step 1-01: Create a Virtual Disk and a Volume

A Virtual Disk (vdisk for short) is a group of drives that are combined to a RAID
array, also known as a RAID group.
The wizard also allows you to create volumes (or LUNs) in the same step. We will
create a RAID1 virtual disk with a single 20 GB volume.
Please follow the first two steps to log on the FibreCAT SX. After that, you can try
to find your own way through the Web user interface or just follow the
instructions.

How to logon to FibreCAT SX60:

0. Open your Internet Explorer

1. Type in the IP adress of your

FibreCAT SX60 in the adressbar,
e.g.:
http:// 172.25.60.2

2. Please log in:

Username = manage
Password = !manage
Now you should see a control panel on
the left side of your screen. There are a
lot of items on this panel, but also bigger
buttons:

4. Click on the button called “Manage”

5. Go to the link called “vdisk

configuration”

6. Click on the link called “create a

vdisk”

Page 4

7. Select: “Manual Virtual Disk Creation”

8. Type: “SNW-TEST1” in the field: Enter Virtual Disk Name
9. Select: “RAID 1 – Disk Mirroring” in the field: Virtual Disk RAID Level
10. Press “Create New Virtual Disk”.

11. Now you have to wait, while the

“Processing”- Screen is shown!

12.. Select the first two icons (representing the hard disks) and press the button
“Continue…”

13. Select: Create Volumes of Equal Size? => NO

and press the button “Create Virtual Disk”

14. Type: “20000” in the field Volume Size for a 20 GB volume.

15. Press: Add Volumes and OK

Confirm information with OK

Step 1-02: Map Volume to Server

In the previous step, we created the virtual disk and the volume, but did not assign
it to any host. This is done in this step.

On the control panel on the left side of your screen, navigate

to the “volume mapping” menu.

1. Click on the link called “VOLUME MANAGEMENT”

2. Click on the link called “volume mapping”

3. Click on the link called “map hosts to volume”

Chapter 1: FibreCAT SX Manager

4. Please scroll down to the end of the page, to the column “Map Host or Default”

5. In the drop-down menu for Host, please select a “Host Name” for the Fibre
Channel Host Bus Adapter (HBA) of the server.
If no host name is available, select a WWN.

6. Please specify a LUN number 0 (between 0 and 127 possible)

7. Then click on “Map Host or Default”.

Step 2-01: Extend a LUN

In this exercise, we are extending the LUN we just created and assigned with the
FibreCAT SX manager by
• Starting Microsoft’s Storage manager for SANs
• Selecting the LUN we just created
• Perform Extend LUN
You can try to do this on your own or follow the detailed instructions and
screenshots below.

1. Logon to the Server

Username=Administrator
Password=snw

Verify the VDS Provider is installed

(Start –Settings – Control Panel –Add/Remove Programs)
