One charter school in Ohio is getting
the next wave of workforce ready for when
the oil industry does bounce back.
In August 2014, we reported on the

Things looked promising when Jeske established the business in 2005,

good drivers available, he says. We definitely were not getting the cream of
the crop.
The end result was, as Jeske puts it, a lot of sleepless nights. It was a
really shaky, tumultuous time. I had all those payments to make and little
revenue coming in, he says. Eventually I had to refinance the truck. I just
rode it out.
KEEPING THE FAITH
Why didnt Jeske just cut his losses by selling the truck and moving on?
I had so much invested in the business, and I thought if the boys took over,
theyd turn it around, he explains.
At the time, Braydon and Bryce, now 27 years old, had recently graduated
from high school. While Bryce was gaining valuable experience working for
a company that replaced water and sewer lines, Braydon was busy taking
business administration courses at a local technical institute. I asked them
to come on board, but they declined, Jeske says. But I kept pecking away
and pecking away and they finally agreed to do it.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
The boys did, indeed, lead a dramatic turnaround. Today the company
employs eight people and owns about $1.7 million worth of equipment,
including three vacuum trucks, a hydroexcavating truck and two steamcleaning units.

BONUSES, FAMILY ATMOSPHERE

AND RESPECT HELP FIRM ATTRACT,
RETAIN GOOD WORKERS
Good employees can make a decent company great. Bad
employees can ruin one. Just ask Terry Jeske, the owner of Supreme
Vac in Edmonton, Alberta, a company that suffered greatly in its early
years due to poor employee performance.
As such, the firm which cleans municipal and industrial
pipelines and also performs oilfield services work was especially
motivated to develop ways to increase the odds of finding not only
qualified, but quality employees. Part of the solution came from
his twin sons, Braydon and Bryce, who joined the company in 2009
and 2010, respectively, and recruited friends to come and work with
them. In lieu of that, they obtained word-of-mouth referrals about
reputable workers from their friends, Braydon says.
You need good people working for you, he says. You can have
the best equipment in the world, but having competent employees
to operate the equipment is the most important thing. And theyre
hard to find.
We try to hire guys we know or have known, he continues.
Were not looking for guys who just want to get a paycheck. We
want guys who really want to make a difference want to do a job
right and generate repeat business.
To attract that kind of employee, Supreme Vac pays competitive
salaries and also pays annual performance-based financial bonuses.
The company also tries to create a family-like atmosphere where
employees feel valued and respected. For example, when employees
work unusually long shifts say, 12 hours the company will buy
them meals. The company also periodically takes employees out for
team-building dinners, Braydon says.
Weve even sent employees on vacations as a reward for great
performance, he notes. We try to maintain a small-company feel.
We dont want to treat our guys like numbers. If you have employees
that respect you, theyll also respect the equipment and your
customers. So you have to treat them with dignity and respect.
In instances where the company interviews prospective
employees without a word-of-mouth reference, it requires a drug
test. The company also obtains a drivers abstract that shows traffic
violations, accidents and such. We also ask them point blank if they
do drugs, drink or smoke, Bryce says. And if they say, No, I blatantly
ask them, Why not? You can tell if theyre telling the truth or not.

customers that call us find us on the Internet. And if people call you for one
service, then you can promote your other services, too.
The boys also resolved one of the companys biggest problems at the
time: finding qualified workers. They brought in friends as well as other
workers they found through word-of-mouth referrals from friends.
Good drivers and operators are the key to the whole thing,
Jeske says. Equipment is just a pile of metal if you dont have

collection and disposal to vacuuming out tanks and vessels to cleaning up
environmental spills. The hydroexcavating truck does daylighting, trenching
and potholing. And the steam-cleaning units are used to wash down vehicles
and drilling rigs and thaw out lines and valves, along with other deicing efforts,
such as thawing out mud pits.

When I go out and do a job, I do it as if I was doing it for myself.

Braydon Jeske
We just got into hydrovacs last year, says Braydon. We were working
on a pipeline construction project and we agreed that it would be a good idea
to buy a hydrovac not only for that project, but to diversify our services, too.
Breaking into new markets was not easy. Its highly competitive, says
Jeske. It seems like everyone has a vac truck a number of people service
(oilfield) rigs part time. And its tough to compete with guys like that because
sometimes they have marginal or substandard equipment and dont charge
what they need to because they tend to view and treat it as a job, not a
business.
But the twins brought a powerful new ally into play: the Internet. In
2011, Braydon created a website that gave the company widespread exposure
and still consistently generates business leads. The website is a huge asset to
the company, Bryce points out. It gives us a ton of exposure. A lot of new

CUSTOMER SERVICE COUNTS

But while marketing and new technologically advanced
equipment will nudge open the doors to new business, providing
excellent customer service keeps those doors wide open, the Jeskes emphasize.
You have to do the job right, Braydon notes. You cant do half a job and
expect customers to be happy. When I go out and do a job, I do it as if I was
doing it for myself.
To keep customers happy, the Jeskes also rely on a very simple and basic
principle: Always answer the phone. We pick up our phones all the time
even on long weekends and holidays, Jeske says. Ive actually had customers
tell us that they called 10 or 15 vac companies before they called us, and we
were the first ones to pick up the phone.
Its a huge differentiator, adds Braydon. We always answer our phones,
regardless of how busy we are or how late it is even 3 a.m. And well try
to find another contractor for a customer if were too busy to do the work.
Jeske says another significant asset his sons ability to solve problems

success, he says.

work by branching into things we already do, Braydon points out.
Many companies might see that as a bad thing, but Braydon disagrees.
Its good for the industry because it will weed out guys who undercut on
price and dont provide good-quality service, he says. And when oil prices
go back up, those companies will go back to serving the oil industry.
During the next three to five years, the Jeskes envision slow, evenly
paced growth. Another possibility: buying land and building a shop in or
near Edmonton. Right now we rent two different buildings a few blocks
apart, Braydon explains. But we need time to evaluate and better assess the
state of the economy going forward before expanding further into land and
equipment.
Jeske also plans to sell the company to the twins in the next five to
eight years, bringing to fruition what he first envisioned back in 2005. I was
hanging in there for my boys, he says of the companys turmoil-filled early
years. I knew that if I had a family-run business, I could eliminate all the
babysitting and headaches I was dealing with. GOMC

WATER & WASTEWATER EQUIPMENT,

INDIANA CONVENTION CENTER
FEB. 17, 2016 - Education Day
FEB. 18-20, 2016 - Exhibit Hall Open

4 DAYS TO
MAKE YOUR
BUSINESS BETTER
The Water & Wastewater Equipment,
Treatment & Transport Show promises great
value and opportunity for your business
By Luke Laggis

ast year, the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport
(WWETT) Show was spilling out of the exhibit hall at the Indiana
Convention Center. This year, its pouring into Lucas Oil Stadium.
It all gets started like it does every year, with the industrys best slate
of education courses. The show returns to its Wednesday-through-Saturday
schedule this year, so Education Day will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17.
A day in the classroom may not sound like the most exciting part of
your trip to Indianapolis, but it could be the most valuable. Presenters from
the industrys top manufacturers and associations will lead a wide variety of
classes, covering everything from septic myths to small-diameter pipe cleaning.
There are more than 50 classes on Wednesday alone.
When class lets out, the party gets started. Just take the short walk over to
Lucas Oil Stadium its connected to the convention center for the 2016
WWETT Show Kickoff Party. Relax, check out the exhibitor sponsor displays,
and enjoy a cold beverage and complimentary hors doeuvres while networking
with manufacturers and peers.
One of the main requests we receive from attendees year in and year out
is for more networking opportunities, says show coordinator Brad Bisnette.
18

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - JANUARY 2016

The Kickoff Party presents this opportunity and does so in a very unique,
convenient and exciting atmosphere.
The show really ramps up on Thursday when the exhibit hall opens. Every
year, products introduced at the show become important components in many
industry professionals toolboxes and equipment fleets. More than 9,400 people
representing 4,200 companies and 54 countries attended the 2015 show, with
597 exhibitors nearly spilling out of the exhibit hall.
This year, its going to be even bigger, encompassing all 560,000-plus
square feet of exhibit space at the Indiana Convention Center, in addition to
the classrooms, stadium and the Sagamore Ballroom.
Right now its a daily challenge trying to figure out how were going to fit

this much equipment on the floor, Bisnette says. Its going to be very
impressive when the lights turn on and the doors open for showtime.
When that moment comes, take your time and scope out the floor.
Theres a ton to see, and you cant get to all of it in one day. Plus, there
are dozens more education courses on Thursday, and youll want to take
advantage of those opportunities. Its the perfect day to take another
class or two, give yourself an overview of the show floor and formulate
a plan to get everything you need out of the next two days. And when
the floor closes, you can head back to Lucas Oil for the second night of
the Kickoff Party.
Friday brings more education and another full day on the exhibit
floor, with a chance for you to zero in on the tools, equipment and
conversations that can make a difference for your business.
In addition to being a huge day at the show, Friday is also the
biggest night, with the Sagamore Ballroom doors opening at 5 p.m. for
the annual Industry Appreciation Party. In addition to 25-cent tap beer
and a fun, laid-back atmosphere, country music star Jerrod Niemann
will perform. Niemanns hits include Blue Bandana, Drink to That
All Night and Lover, Lover.
Just make sure you dont really drink to that all night, because
Saturday is the final day of the show and your last opportunity to see
everything that makes it great.
Dont forget, theres also plenty to do outside the show. Indianapolis
is a fun and accommodating city with dozens of museums, entertainment
venues and shopping opportunities, along with hundreds of restaurants
within walking distance of the convention center. And with 4,700 guest
rooms connected to the Indiana Convention Center via covered and
heated skyways, weather wont be an issue.
The 2016 WWETT Show will be held Feb. 17-20 at the Indiana
Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. You can view the
complete schedule of events along with an exhibitor list, floor plan,
travel information and everything else youll need to plan your trip to

Building the Business

HOW DO YOU WIN

THE TALENT WARS?
With the growing shortage of skilled job applicants, the battle
for new hires is building, and small businesses need to get
creative to compete with corporate America
By John Dini

ave you heard the term talent

wars? They are heating up, and
most small businesses arent well
equipped to do battle.
The term reflects a growing shortage
in the U.S. labor market of properly trained
and educated employees. Since before the
latest recession, there has been a mismatch
between people seeking jobs and those who
hire them. Recent statistics show that employers were advertising to fill 51 million
open positions, an all-time record.
Many business owners complain about
the lack of talent in the hiring pool especially in sales, technical jobs and trades. Several factors contribute to this situation, and
if you intend to compete in the talent wars,
you need to be aware of them.
Whats driving the shortage?
Fewer people. The number of people
in the prime age group for experienced employees is shrinking. Those reaching age 65
outnumber the folks hitting their 45th birthday by 4,000 people a day. This overlap of
the post-World War II baby boom with the
baby bust of the late 1960s and 70s cant
be changed, and it will continue for the next
10 years.
One strategy to counter the middle-experience gap is to look further up and down
the age bracket. You will need to reconsider
fixed ideas about what an ideal age is for
these positions. Many boomers are healthier than preceding generations and plan to
work longer. A new hire in his or her late 50s
can be brought up to speed in far less time
and still be a productive employee for 10 or
15 years.
Training. Our higher education system is driven more by low-interest, government-guaranteed loans than by the value of
a degree. Employers can no longer look at
college education as de facto evidence of

20

qualifications, but it still can provide some

guidance. How long did it take the applicant
to graduate? (Less than 50 percent make it
in four years.) What courses did he or she
take? A well-rounded liberal arts education
still has value, and timely completion still

Small-business employers are finally

becoming aware of the crisis, but they cant
win this battle on the benefits front. Wages are
a much higher percentage of their expenses,
and they typically arent deep enough in any
one position to easily swap bodies when
necessary. They have to compete with the
weapons they have always used against giant
competitors: speed, creativity and culture.
TRY THESE TACTICS
Small-business owners can use these
techniques, which cost little beyond some
time and energy, and they may even reduce
employment expenses.
Treat employees as real people. Most
small companies take pride in their family
atmosphere, and that culture is still your
biggest advantage. Employee satisfaction
surveys consistently rate the importance of

indicates a goal-oriented person. Both, however, require more investigation than merely
checking the diploma.
Increasing competition for talent.
After years of downsizing, outsourcing and
technology upgrades that replaced people,
large organizations are now filling the slots
left by the wave of retiring boomers. According to a poll of 587 corporate executives
in the study Talent Wars: The Struggle for
Tomorrows Workforce, published in The
Economist, the top five concerns were:
1. Aging population
2. Shift of personal values (e.g.,
stronger focus on work/life balance)
3. Lack of investment in training and
developing employees
4. Increasing gaps between what universities provide and what industries need
5. Low or declining standards of education
These issues arent surprising. What
owners of small and midsize businesses
need to realize, however, is that this
study was done eight years ago. Since then
corporate America has reacted, offering
signing bonuses, guaranteed wage increases,
creative benefits packages and more.

social interaction in the workplace far higher

than wages.
Tailor jobs and benefits to individuals. Show you are truly concerned about an
employees job satisfaction. Some companies
have a flexible self-improvement benefit a
few hundred dollars annually for each employee to use as he or she chooses for education, hobby lessons or a gym membership.
Consider carefully whether it is really a problem if an employee schedules around family
needs, such as taking the kids to school in
the morning.
Maintain current technology. Most
of us get frustrated if a website doesnt load
in less than five seconds. Dont make your
employees deal with outdated equipment
or software. The cost of a second monitor or
upgraded workstation is less than most employees weekly salaries.
Consider outsourcing. Many smaller
companies hire a skilled person and then
fill in his or her 40-hour week with lowerlevel tasks a sales manager producing the
customer newsletter, for example. The idea of
We do that ourselves is impractical when
you are overpaying for the function. You cant
afford to pay for full-time talent if it is really
only a part-time job.

Invest in skills. Owners often worry they are training people to get better jobs elsewhere. Let employees know you are investing in them as recognition for their ability. Once they are more qualified, adjust wages to reflect their
new value. Gratitude is a short-lived motivation for staying in a job.
Pay market rates. Every small-business owner has lost an employee to
an offer I just couldnt match, but if it is happening regularly, you may be
out of touch with the wage scale. Those with ability dont have a problem
finding work. You may not be able to match the top of the market, but you
need to be in the ballpark.
Market internally. Employees can develop a grass is greener attitude
when they take for granted all the good things their employer offers. So make
a list of all the tangible and intangible benefits your company provides, and
schedule regular reminders of them for your workers.
The talent wars are here and will intensify in the years to come. Finding
and retaining the right people will depend on your ability to fight back with
the inherent advantages of a small business. GOMC

Tech Perspective

SpillFix Industrial Organic Absorbent is demonstrated on an oil spill at an oilfield site.

A DIFFERENT

SPILL SOLUTION
SpillFix provides oil companies with a new cleanup option
By MaryBeth Matzek

NORTH AMERICAN OIL AND GAS COMPANIES HAVE A NEW

OPTION WHEN IT COMES TO DEALING WITH SPILLS.
Made from coconut husks, SpillFix Industrial Organic Absorbent
increases its surface area as it works so it can absorb more liquid. The product
works by encapsulating the liquid and then trapping the hydrocarbon
inside its hollow channel structure, says David Roache, chief executive
officer for Galuku Group North America, the parent company of American
Green Ventures.
SpillFix is the first absorbent innovation in 35 years, he says. Our
product is half the cost of whats on the market right now, and its more
absorbent so people can use less.
Joe Davids of Galuku Group Limited in Australia invented SpillFix
after a trip to Malaysia. He noticed the absorbing ability of coir a coconut
byproduct and then developed SpillFix after returning home. It was later
marketed and used with success in Australia and other parts of the world.
American Green Ventures secured the exclusive marketing and distribution
rights for SpillFix in North America and is now rolling out a campaign to
educate businesses about the product.

Its made from a renewable resource coconut husks and is safe

for landfills, providing lower disposal costs and no environmental impact,
Roache says, adding that the husks keep the hydrocarbons trapped so they
cant leach out into surrounding areas. Used SpillFix can also be used as a
fuel source in some energy-producing incinerators as well.
CLAY-FREE MATERIAL
Unlike clay-based absorbents, SpillFix is dust-free, says Roache,
adding that it was just named new product of the year in the hazmat safety
category by Occupational Health &
Safety magazine.
It also works faster. When

SpillFix clients use 80 percent

absorbs odors.
For example, Roache says one
company testing the product in the
U.S. market went from using 18 pallets of clay-based absorbents to just 3
1/2 pallets of SpillFix. The company already counts Baker Hughes among
its customers.
Another great thing about SpillFix is that it can be reused, he
says. Companies are able to use less of the product, which adds to the
cost savings.

OIL AND GAS USES

For the oil and gas industries, SpillFix is a good fit, Roache says. It
works in all temperatures and can be easily stored and used so employees can
get to it, he says.
With oil prices so low, many companies are looking to save money, and
Roache says SpillFix can do just that since less of the product is needed and
costs associated with transportation and disposal are lower. Companies save
in multiple areas cost of product, they use less product so transportation
costs decrease, it can be disposed of in a landfill so theres no special cleanup
costs, he says. Its truly a win-win product.
As for how it can be used in the field, Roache says some companies keep
it on hand to deal with emergency spills while others may use it regularly
by placing some beneath any pipes or areas with drips. Its a very flexible
product, and you use just as much as you need to, he says.
SpillFix is available in 7-pound and 20-pound bags as well as 10-foot and
5-foot boom socks.
Its very easy to use and absorbs on contact, Roache says. Its also
lighter than traditional absorbents so if a company is worried about their
employees lifting heavy bags, this is another alternative. GOMC

KEY RESOURCE
FOR COMPANIES
North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources is
a valuable organization for oil producers and seekers
By MaryBeth Matzek

he drop in oil prices has put the

North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources Oil and Gas Division
in new territory: How should it handle
temporarily abandoned wells?
The Oil and Gas Division monitors
and manages all wells in the state from
the permitting process until theyve gone
through reclamation.
Our department covers a lot of
ground, says Alison Ritter, public information officer for the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources Oil and
Gas Division. We handle the entire regulatory process from even before wells are
approved. We lay the framework so the industries know what kind of resources are
available.
With the lower oil prices, some
companies complete the drilling process
but havent put the wells into service,
and others have applied for temporarily
abandoned status.

Were a place where people

come for answers they may
have during the oil
drilling process.
Alison Ritter

Thats something new for us. We

need to figure out how to accommodate
that and what steps need to be taken, Ritter says. Inspections still need to be done
and there are administration issues related
to it.
She adds that many companies hope to
come back to the wells once oil prices go up.
24

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - JANUARY 2016

The state collects a bond for each well and

holds that money until a site goes through
reclamation so taxpayers dont wind up paying if a company walks away without returning the site to its previous condition. The
state collects a $50,000 bond for one well
and $100,000 for two or more.
To help oil companies weather the
tough financial times, Lynn Helms, director of the Oil and Gas Division, points out
that North Dakota lowered its extraction
tax rate from 11.5 percent to 10 percent as
long as oil prices stay below $90. He adds
that price per barrel is what will really drive
oil production in the state and elsewhere.
Operators are now committed to
running fewer rigs than their planned 2015
minimum as drill times and efficiencies
continue to improve and oil prices continue to fall, Helms says. This has resulted
in a current active drilling rig count of 10
to 15 rigs below what operators indicated
would be their 2015 average if oil prices
remained below $65 per barrel.
North Dakota definitely feels the effects of lower oil prices, Helms says. In
September, the state permitted 154 drilling
wells and one seismic well, down from an
all-time high of 370 in October 2012.
Oil price weakness now anticipated
to last well into (2016) is the main reason
for the continued slowdown (in the state),
he says.
Trying to determine what to do with
the temporarily abandoned wells is just
one of the many duties handled by the Oil
and Gas Division. Besides overseeing all
wells, it also handles the states geological
mapping. The department gets involved on
a project before a site goes through the permitting process. Monthly hearings look at

all proposals, including current sites looking to expand.

Its like being preapproved for a loan,
Ritter says. You go through that to make
sure everything looks good and then you
find what you want to buy and then need
to go out and get the actual loan.
To keep track of the states wells, the
department works with a database that
tracks each site and where it is in its life
cycle. We keep watching the well until its
no longer being used and the site has been
returned to its previous state, Ritter says.
Ritter says the department balances
helping oil companies identify and develop
potential sites while protecting the rights of
everyone involved.

Theres a lot involved. While were promoting the development of wells,

we want to do it in a way that prevents waste and maximizes the economic

landowners, the royalty owners, the producers and the general public realize
the greatest good from these vital natural resources, she says.

We handle the entire regulatory process from even

The department also works with landowners or others who have questions about drilling sites or are wondering about when theyll receive their
royalties.

SECOND-YEAR BOOM
Utica Shale Academy sees enrollment jump after first
year of oil and gas focused charter school in Ohio
By Greg Bates

t started out as an idea. In the heart of

gas and oil country in southern Ohio,
why not open a high school where
students can earn a general education
degree as well as offer course elections for a
gas and oil program?
Utica Shale Academy (USA), based in
Salineville, Ohio, took that thought and ran
with it. The result has been phenomenal.
The tuition-free, publicly funded
school entered its second year in fall 2015.

classroom and at home. Core courses are

fully aligned to Ohios Academic Content
Standards, which are rooted in the National
Academic Content Standards. Courses are
provided by Jefferson County Educational
Service Center Virtual Learning Academy.
Students, who must live in Ohio
and be under the age of 21 to enroll, are
required to be on site the majority of the
time; however, the attendance policy isnt
nearly the same as a public school as
students can go to class full or half days.

Thats attractive to some kids that

dont care much for a traditional brick-andmortar school, Sampson says.
Every school day, each student
decides what courses they want to tackle.
If they choose to work on math, they can
work on math. If English is their subject,
the student will go through course work.
All the students course work is completed
at their own pace in the one-room
schoolhouse, so to speak, Sampson says.
It is as far from a traditional school
setting as you can imagine, Sampson
says. There is no teacher standing up
front going through reading, writing and
arithmetic. Students are online, and I just
basically monitor to make sure they are
doing what they are supposed to be doing.
Ten students graduated last year from
USA and 16 are on pace to earn their
diplomas in 2016. Five of those seniors are
going through the oil and gas curriculum.
Roughly one-third of this years total
enrollment is taking part in the specialized
gas and oil program.

Weve got more help for our online courses.

Weve improved in every aspect of the
school since last year.
Wes Householder
After having an enrollment of 43 students
in grades nine through 12 in the first
year, figures jumped to 71 students (16
freshmen, 15 sophomores, 24 juniors and
16 seniors) by the end of October in the
second year. USA Director Eric Sampson
says he receives multiple calls per week
from students interested in enrolling.
Its like buying the first year of a
new model car, nobody wants to buy it
until they get all the kinks worked out,
Sampson says. In year two, people are
more inclined to buy. I think thats what
happened with us. A lot of people took the
wait-and-see approach to see how things
were going to go and saw the success we
had. They said, OK, well buy in.

Brian Logue, a sales representative for Express Energy

Services, speaks to students at the Utica Shale
Academy in Ohio on technology in the oil and gas
industry. The school, which launched in 2014, went
from 43 students its first year to 71 this year.

There is no teacher standing up front going through

reading, writing and arithmetic. Students are online,
and I just basically monitor to make sure they are
doing what they are supposed to be doing.
Eric Sampson

Students at the Utica Shale Academy attend a field trip to a gas and oil site to see technology
firsthand.

With so much interest in the Utica Shale Academy, it expanded to a

second location this year to bring the program to as many kids as possible.
In 2014, the academy occupied an area at Southern Local Jr./Sr. High School
in Salineville. Along with Southern Local, this year Columbiana High School
in Columbiana was added to offer a school more centrally located within
Jefferson County. The two schools are about 35 minutes apart.
The first year was an opportunity for Sampson and the school advisory
committee to figure out what worked and what didnt as far as daily operation
and curriculum. Since there isnt another school like it in Ohio, there wasnt
a model for the academy to base anything after.
Senior Wes Householder is in his second year and has noticed substantial
strides this year with how the school is functioning. Students are able to earn
an increased number of gas and oil certifications this year and can also earn
college credits.
The second year were a little bit more efficient with online classes,
Householder says. The PetroEd has updated a few times since last year, so
there are a few different courses we can go on and take. Weve got more help
for our online courses. Weve improved in every aspect of the school since
last year.
HANDS-ON TRAINING
Along with taking online courses, students get plenty of hands-on
training. Field trips to oilfields as well as heading to rigs and gas- and oilrelated businesses in Ohio are a big draw for students. We try to expose
these kids to options so they get to see what is out there when they graduate,
Sampson says.
Local industry representatives also take the time to speak with the
students. Brian Logue, a sales representative for Express Energy Services,
speaks to the students a couple times a month. Hes also the industry
representative and the school advisory committee member. Logue believes
its invaluable for students to hear speakers.
I think its very important because they get to hear from the actual
people in the industry, Logue says. They get a good perspective and see
what that persons job is, whats available, and the training thats needed to
get in certain positions.
Logue also helps schedule other speakers and field trips. Before heading
on a field trip, students generally study where they are traveling to have a
good idea what to expect when they get on site.
I think just like anything, when you actually go out in the field and

see all the inner workings, youre going to be more interested than sitting
in a classroom and learning it from somebody, Householder says. You get
that firsthand experience of what it might be like to do that job. I think once
somebody realizes thats what they want to do, they really put their effort
into it.
In the classroom, the students who are in the gas and oil program are
learning what it takes to succeed in the workplace.
Theyll get their basic oil and gas safety training, then you can get
drilling training on how the well is drilled, the type of equipment used,
different types of casing sizes, Logue says. That way, when they get out in
the industry, they already know some basic terminology and theyve been
exposed to it well in advance of hiring guys off the street. GOMC

Eye on the Industry

GOING WHERE
THE MONEY IS
Harsh weather conditions, remoteness of work all play a
factor in what shale play employees get paid in each region
By Greg Bates

or the past decade, out-of-state workers have flocked to the northwestern

part of North Dakota.
Recruits have found a lucrative opportunity that is hard to pass up in the oil
and gas industry. The Bakken Shale, one
of the top producing oil and gas plays in
the United States, has been booming in the
small Midwestern towns. Workers want a
piece of the action.
However, North Dakotas cold climate half the year and rural surroundings
havent made for the coziest and most luxurious of living conditions. Something has
to be the driving force behind all the workers who started their new life in the Peace
Garden State.

There are quite a few people (working the

Bakken) from Texas, Louisiana, but companies
tried to recruit from places that had similar
climates to North Dakota because it made
it that much easier to keep them here,
especially once winter hit.
Tessa Sandstrom
ATTRACTING
THE WORKFORCE
As they say, money talks. Thats certainly true in the Bakken.
In most cases, those working in the Bakken Shale play are paid significantly higher
wages compared to those in the Eagle Ford
Shale play in southern Texas and the Marcellus Shale play in Pennsylvania and Ohio. All
three plays are among the top six producing
oil and gas plays in the United States.

Its a means of trying to attract

workforce to live and work up here, says Tessa
Sandstrom, director of communications for
the North Dakota Petroleum Council, about
the higher wages in North Dakota. With
the high cost of living that resulted from the
dramatic growth, it helps pay for that as well
and attract good, quality workers.
Thomas Tunstall, Ph.D., senior research
director at the Institute for Economic
Development at the University of Texas at
San Antonio, has done extensive research
of the Eagle Ford over the years. He has
conducted four economic impact studies on
the shale dating back to 2011.
My brothers in the business and he
was telling me that when things got going in
the Bakken, a lot of the Louisiana boys went
up there to work, says Tunstall, whose dad
was a petroleum engineer. Basically, they
held out for a year and then went looking
for other opportunities because it was too
cold. Im sure thats part of it, because it gets
really cold up in North Dakota compared to
Louisiana or Texas. Another thing is theres
less diversion for the workers. I think the
population is more dense in south Texas;
its not necessarily hugely dense, but theres
things to do, and San Antonio is not that far
away. Those are my two hypotheses.
Theres quite a big difference in the
temperature ranges of the three shales.
The average temperature in the Bakken
boomtown of Williston, North Dakota, is
41.45 degrees; in the heart of the Marcellus,
Towanda, Pennsylvania, has an average
temperature of 48.03 degrees; one of Eagle
Fords boomtowns, Karnes City, Texas,
averages 69.05 degrees.
There are quite a few people (working
the Bakken) from Texas, Louisiana, but

companies tried to recruit from places

that had similar climates to North Dakota
because it made it that much easier to
keep them here, especially once winter
hit, Sandstrom says. So there are quite
a few workers from Montana, Minnesota,
Washington, Idaho and Oregon as well.
In Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma,
theres a large contingent of folks who have
only ever worked in that industry, Tunstall
says. That bode well during the Eagle Ford
boom because workers didnt have to travel far
for work.
Cost of living also plays a factor in the
higher wages paid out in North Dakota,
notes Sandstrom. However, small towns in
Texas and Pennsylvania that were affected
during their respective booms also saw a
spike in their cost of living.
Very similar to North Dakota, they
were, at least in Pennsylvania, more rural
areas that had kind of been struggling
economically for a while, and then all of
a sudden you have all this activity and
people moving back in, Sandstrom says. I
think the cost of living has been a challenge
for just about every shale play just because
of the rapid growth that came with it.
TELL-ALL FIGURES
According to an employment and
wages report for 2014 conducted by Job
Service North Dakota, first-line supervisors
of construction trades and excavator
workers (rig supervisors) in North Dakota
made on average $77,320 per year ($37.17
per hour). For experienced supervisors in
that field, pay jumps to $92,980 per year.
In the far west region of North Dakota
which includes oil- and gas-rich Williams,
McKenzie and Dunn counties a first-line
supervisor made on average $88,770 per
year; for an experienced worker in that area,
the wage was at $103,390.
In Pennsylvania in 2014, first-line
supervisors of construction trades and
excavator workers on average made $69,430
per year, according to the Center for
Workforce Information & Analysis through
the state of Pennsylvania. In the Eagle
Ford region of Texas, that same occupation
during the second quarter of 2015 had
workers making $26.15 per hour or roughly

$54,400 per year, according to Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend.

Derrick operators in North Dakota made an average of $58,750 per year
($28.25 per hour), while an experienced operator made $69,460. In Texas,
derrick operators took in $22.57 per hour or roughly $47,000 per year. In
Pennsylvania, their wage was $46,240 per year.
Below is a list of how other gas and oil occupation wages compared in
the three shale plays:
Roustabouts: North Dakota, $44,980/year ($21.62/hour); Texas, roughly
$32,800/year ($15.77/hour); Pennsylvania, $39,000/year.
Service unit operators: North Dakota, $54,350/year ($26.13/hour);
Texas, roughly $42,000/year ($20.17/hour); Pennsylvania, $43,040/year.
Rotary drill operators: North Dakota, $66,390/year ($31.92/hour);
Texas, roughly $55,500/year ($26.67/hour); Pennsylvania, $50,750/year.
Helpers excavation workers: North Dakota, $34,080/year ($16.39/
hour); Texas, roughly $37,700/year ($18.13/hour); Pennsylvania,
$35,710/year.
Pump operators: North Dakota, no figures available; Texas, roughly
$54,200/year ($26.06/hour); Pennsylvania, $46,750/year.
Operating engineers and other construction equipment operators:
North Dakota, $51,770/year ($24.89/hour); Texas, roughly $33,700/year
($16.18/hour); Pennsylvania, no figures available.
Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers: North Dakota, $50,810/year
($24.43/hour); Texas, roughly $36,100/year ($17.37/hour); Pennsylvania,
no figures available.
The wages workers earn in the Eagle Ford and Marcellus shales are pretty
similar in most instances.
The premium that the energy industry pays is already significant and
I think generally well acknowledged, Tunstall says. For the Bakken, they
probably have to pay somewhat of a premium above that, but its not hard to

attract workers today in the industry. Its a place where comparatively lowskilled folks can go and dont need a college education, but you can make the
type of money you cant make in any other industry with that skill set. And if
you are skilled, a petroleum engineer or a geologist, you can really clean up.
UNCERTAIN FUTURE
Only time will tell if the wages in the Bakken are superior to the other
shale plays in the United States.
Prior to the downturn, a lot of people were interested in coming here
for the higher wages, but also just the opportunity that really didnt exist
anywhere else, Sandstrom says. The shale plays, all of them, were different
from the Bakken where the economic recovery wasnt going quite as quickly,
so people needed those jobs.
Now Sandstrom says the challenge is with the crude oil price downturn.
A lot of people are going to return to their home states and work there,
Sandstrom says. When things pick back up again, the question is will they
be able to get a lot of those workers back or not. We certainly have attracted a
lot of people (in North Dakota) with the higher wages, but I think the higher
cost of living may keep some people home. GOMC

THE EVOLUTION
OF SAFETY CLOTHING
New fabrics, changes in regulations help make flame-resistant
clothing safer and more comfortable for oil and gas workers
By Mark Saner

after 40 years of progress, they are also far

more fashionable and significantly more
comfortable for workers to wear.
With choices ranging from vibrant

A CHANGE IN FABRICS
FR fabrics have not only improved in
terms of their protection properties, but

An oilfield worker wears flame-resistant coveralls made by Workrite Uniform Company on a job site. Flameresistant clothing is changing constantly with new material being developed and new regulations being
introduced. (Photo courtesy of Workrite Uniform Company)

lame-resistant (FR) clothing has

come a long way from its origins in
the lab of French chemist Joseph
Louis Gay-Lussac, who first discovered
in 1821 that ammonium phosphates and
borax were capable of making textiles
relatively flame retardant.
In the early 1970s, employers in the
petroleum refining and chemical processing
industries started adopting FR clothing
programs to help prevent injuries caused
by flash fire an intense and rapidly
spreading fire caused by the combination
of air and a flammable substance. These
companies found that when regular cotton
or polyester work clothes ignited, the
amount and severity of burn injuries were
substantially higher, which greatly reduced
workers chances of survival. By utilizing FR
fibers and fabrics in employees work wear,
employers could greatly reduce the severity
and amount of burn injuries, and improve
their workers likelihood of survival.
Since these early days, FR clothing
development, research and production
have continued to improve, making FR
fabric a staple for employers in a variety of
industries, such as oil and gas, electrical
utilities, fire service, and laboratories.
Todays FR garments can protect against
a variety of hazards including flash
fire, arc flash and molten-metal splatter
by offering ignition prevention or selfextinguishing properties that help prevent
continual burning and grant workers
potentially lifesaving escape time when
exposed to such hazards.

royal blues, oranges and reds to timeless

navy, khaki and denim, the days of FR
clothing only being available in a generic,
one-color coverall are long gone.
The fabrics have also evolved due
to companies like DuPont, Westex and
Milliken engineering new materials that
are lighter, sweat-wicking and more
breathable, while still offering a quality
level of FR protection. Additionally, there
are now a vast number of clothing styles to
choose from, including dress shirts, cargo
pants, knit henleys, outerwear and denim
jeans. Name brands such as Dickies and
Walls have now brought their popular
aesthetics to the FR market, as well.

www.gomcmag.com - JANUARY 2016

DEVELOPMENTS IN REGULATIONS
In parallel with the advances in FR clothings functional and design
properties are the major developments in regulations regarding FR clothings
practical use in the workplace.
In 1974, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
released CFR 1910.132, its general safety standard for personal protective
equipment (PPE). This standard states that PPE which includes equipment
for the eyes, face, head and extremities, protective garments, respiratory
devices, and protective shields and barriers is to be provided, used and
maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary by
reason of hazards of processes or environment, chemical hazards, radiological
hazards or mechanical irritants encountered. The standard also requires
employers to analyze the workplace to determine if hazards are present that
require PPE, and if so, select the appropriate types of PPE for the task.
While OSHAs CFR 1910.132 addresses general requirements for the
use of PPE, it does not provide specific recommendations for industries at
higher risk for hazards, nor does it list criteria to determine if such hazards
are present. In light of this need for clarity especially for the oil and
gas industry, which has a prevalent risk of flash fire OSHA issued a
memorandum to this original standard in March 2010.

more frequent. From 2003 to 2009, 716 workers in the oil and gas extraction
industry, exclusively, lost their lives on the job. Thus, the memorandum was
issued to help prevent such occurrences and encourage consistency in FR
clothing use among drilling contractors.
CRITICAL CLOTHING
The evolution of FR clothing over nearly two centuries reveals how
critical that fateful day in 1821, when Gay-Lussac experimented with the heatabsorbing properties of certain chemicals, truly was.
Now, because of the dedication and hard work of FR fabric and clothing
manufacturers, the FR clothing industry is continuing to evolve, improve and
be refined over time.
For the FR industry today, manufacturers are striving to increase garment
quality, improve worker compliance, seek higher standards and develop
safer environments for workers in hazardous industries all in an effort to
potentially save lives. To learn more about the FR clothing industry, including
FR clothing standards, visit FRinformation.com. GOMC
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Mark Saner is the technical manager for Workrite Uniform Company. He brings more than 35 years of
experience in the fire and safety industries to his work, including 29 years in technical support, safety
standards and product development for Akron Brass Manufacturing Company.

While the oil and gas industry has worked to reduce the
risk of flash-fire incidents, these efforts have not eliminated
the occurrence of flash fires, nor the resulting burn injuries
and fatalities. The use of FR clothing greatly improves the
chance of a worker surviving and regaining quality of life
after a flash fire.

Meeting
more than
Basic Needs.

OSHA
The goal of the CFR 1910.132 clarification memorandum was to provide
clearer enforcement rules so that employers in the oil and gas industry would
better understand when FR clothing is required. It also sought to express
OSHAs position that FR clothing is a necessity in certain applications
associated with oil and gas well drilling, servicing, and production operations.
The memorandum labels specific activities in the petroleum industry that
require FR clothing such as snubbing, tubing, open-hole work, cementing,
transferring hydrocarbons, tank heating and many more and certain
circumstances that demand FR protection, such as reaching active gas or
hydrocarbon zones during drilling operations.
OSHAs justification for issuing this memorandum was stated as, While
the oil and gas industry has worked to reduce the risk of flash-fire incidents,
these efforts have not eliminated the occurrence of flash fires, nor the
resulting burn injuries and fatalities. The use of FR clothing greatly improves
the chance of a worker surviving and regaining quality of life after a flash fire.
FR clothing can significantly reduce both the extent and severity of burn
injuries to the body.
Prior to the release of the CFR 1910.132 memorandum, the use of FR
clothing in the oil and gas industries was not a widely held or mandated
practice, making instances of flash-fire burn injuries and fatalities relatively

SOLAR PROTECTION
Polyurethane material hose line from
Kuriyama features UV resistance
By Craig Mandli

aterial-handling hose needs durability to pump abrasive liquids, and toughness to withstand prolonged
use in harsh environments, including snow, ice and
rain. But hoses used outdoors for prolonged periods of time are
also subject to damage resulting from exposure to both heat
and UV light.
Thats why a new hose introduced by Kuriyama of America at the 2015 Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment
& Transport (WWETT) Show makes so much sense. Tigerflex
Solarguard Amphibian AMPH-SLR Series heavy-duty polyurethane-lined wet or dry material-handling hoses are specially
constructed to resist this type of damage.
We actually use a special compound that contains a double dose of UV stabilizers that reflect the damaging UV photons
away from the hose, says John Kohls, national sales manager
for Kuriyama of America. We first found success using this
material for hoses in the methane gas industry, then decided to
transfer it to the hydrovac and pumper truck market.
Solarguard hoses are made from a reflective yellow pigment that reduces heat absorption, as they can remain up to
10 degrees F cooler than darker-colored hoses, further protecting the hose and extending the service life. Tests commissioned
by Kuriyama showed a 3 percent reduction in hose material
strength after prolonged UV exposure, whereas the companys
standard PVC hoses showed over 40 percent strength loss over
the same period.

We first found success using this material for hoses in

the methane gas industry, then decided to transfer it
to the hydrovac and pumper truck market.
John Kohls
We knew from the testing that this was going to be a success, says Kohls.
The Solarguard hose does cost a little more than our traditional polyurethane
hose, but its going to last twice as long.
Solarguard Amphibian AMPH-SLR Series hoses are ideal for hydroexcavation, industrial vacuum equipment, material handling (including heavy-duty
abrasives), sewer truck boom hose, and slurry handling. It has a durable PVC
cover with polyurethane liner and PVC helix, and is rated for use in temperatures from minus 4 to 150 degrees F. A multi-strand grounding wire built into
6- and 8-inch hose helps prevent the buildup of static electricity for added

safety and to help keep material flowing smoothly. Kuriyama began selling the
hose in December 2014 in a limited capacity before officially launching the
product to the wastewater industry at the WWETT Show.
The feedback weve received from those using Solarguard hose in the field
has been excellent, says Kohls. Our big goal having it at the WWETT Show
is to educate potential consumers on the strong value it provides, despite the
little bit higher cost.
Kohls says that the contacts and feedback he and the rest of the on-floor
Kuriyama staff received regarding the Solarguard hose has been overwhelmingly
positive. He pointed out that the company came into the show with high expectations, and it was apparent almost immediately those would be surpassed.
This product solves a big problem that a lot of contractors in the field
were dealing with and told us about in previous years, says Kohls. Attending
this show gives our staff a great opportunity to gather that feedback from different portions of the market and use it to make better products. Thats why were
excited to be here. 847/755-0360; www.kuriyama.com. GOMC

SEARCHING FOR LEAKS

Pumps provide longevity and reliability to torque-and-test units for
Texas-based contractor running high-pressure water tests
By Ken Wysocky

hecking blowout preventers for leaks is a critical step before oil

companies begin drilling operations. As such, the last thing
contractors such as Frontier Services need is testing equipment thats
prone to breakdowns which is why the company relies on pumps made by
Reliable Pumps Consultants to build its own torque-and-test units.
We own about 30 torque-and-test units, and they all use pumps made
by Reliable, says Justin McGehee, a co-owner and operations manager of
Frontier, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. He and his partners bought
the company in 1995; it provides wellhead services throughout Texas and
parts of Colorado. When
we buy pumps, were

reliable, he adds. I guess
thats why theyre named
Reliable Pumps.
The pumps generate maximum pressure of 20,000 psi and can pump
up to 13 gpm. Transported on flatbed trailers made by PJ Trailers and pulled
by Dodge and Ford four-wheel-drive pickup trucks, the testing units include
two 300-gallon water tanks and a 110 hp diesel engine made by either Deere
& Co. or Perkins Engines.

To test blowout preventers, Frontier crews also rely on torque wrenches

made by Torq/Lite and Barton chart recorders made by Recorders Charts
& Pens. The chart recorders are used to formally document the pressure at
which each section of the preventer was tested and how long the pressure
was held; that information is provided to customers and regulatory agencies,
McGehee says. The drilling companies want to know that everything held
before they start going down 20,000 feet to drill for oil, McGehee says.
Located right below a drilling rig, a blowout preventer seals a well shut
if drillers unexpectedly hit a high-pressure zone deep underground, which
would send dangerously large volumes of oil rushing to the surface. As such,
the blowout preventers are essential to safe drilling operations. The most
famous blowout-preventer failure occurred on the Deepwater Horizon drilling

For Environmental &

Support Service Professionals
rig in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010; the accident killed 11 employees and
released roughly 5 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf.
To ensure blowout preventers are working properly, Frontier crews
torque up the large assembly of valves by tightening all bolts with hightorque wrenches that apply pressure of up to 10,000 psi. Then they set a large
iron test plug in the bottom of the wellhead and pump water into the well
and the body of the preventer under high pressure anywhere from 3,000
to 8,000 psi. Rams at the top of the wellhead are closed to seal off the top of
the well, creating a contained, pressurized area, McGehee says.
We hold the pressure for five or 10 minutes, depending on what the
customer wants, McGehee explains. We check all the valves in stages,
making sure that nothing leaks. We record our (pressure) ratings on a chart
recorder whenever we pressure up.
The testing is extremely critical, he adds. You never want a blowout
on location. Just look at the BP (British Petroleum) blowout (in the Gulf of
Mexico) and all the money that cost the company. Not only that, people can
get seriously hurt or even killed.
Because the pressure testing is so important to drilling safety, this is one
oilfield operation thats not a race against the clock. Speed is not important,
McGehee says. Its definitely not a race. You definitely want to find
every leak.

Justin McGehee

A typical pressure test can take anywhere from six to 16 hours; McGehee
recalls one that lasted three days because crews kept finding leaks.
The units two water tanks generally dont need to be refilled during
most jobs because each test uses only 15 or 20 gallons of water. Were
not pumping a whole lot of volume, he notes. The orifice in the blowout
preventer is very small.
One factor that contributes to the pumps longevity: They operate only
in short bursts, usually about 10 minutes at a time. McGehee estimates that
if a test takes 24 hours, the pump might run for a total of about two hours.
We test frac stacks, too, which are an assembly of valves used to cap off
a well after a drilling rig is moved off, McGehee explains. Its just like doing
a static-pressure test on a new house to make sure none of the plumbing is
leaking. On some frac stacks, we might put 10,000 to 12,000 psi of pressure
on them to test them.
The pumps last a long time because there arent many moving parts. In
fact, the engine that drives each pump is the one component most prone to
failure, McGehee says. Or the Teflon packing in the pumps sometimes fails,
he says. Either way, he says the Reliable pumps are easy to repair. We can
tear them down and rebuild them in no time, he says. Thats important
because if something happens on location, we want to minimize downtime.
With a price tag of about $100,000, which includes a full complement
of tools and accessories such as test plugs and torque wrenches, the pumps
dont come cheap. But are they a good investment? Heck, yeah, McGehee
says. Theres no reason in the world it cant pay for itself within six months,
depending on how busy you are. GOMC

APS electromagnetic telemetry system
provides 2-way communication
By Ed Wodalski

The SureShot electromagnetic (EM) measurement-while-drilling

(MWD) system from APS Technology transmits from a total vertical
depth of 10,104 feet in oil-based mud. The system operates at up to 12
bits per second and 12 Hz. Maximum transmit power is 50 watts.
One of the main advantages of EM is the time savings over mud
pulse when taking surveys, says Andy Roberts, EM project manager, APS
Technology. EM saves four to five minutes per survey over mud pulse.
The game-changer is the high ROPs (rate of penetration) that are being
achieved in todays wells. At 20 surveys a day, EM can save 1 1/2 hours
or more a day.
Available in 4 3/4-, 6 1/2-, 6 3/4- and 8-inch sizes, the system
communicates by transmitting electromagnetic waves through the
formation instead of pressure pulses through fluid columns.
For mud pulse telemetry, mud flow has to resume, be on long
enough to detect flow, then take time while the survey is transmitted,
he says. After the survey is received, the rig may have to wait a couple
minutes while the directional driller evaluates the survey and decides
the course of action. With EM, there is no need to wait until flow is
established.
Downhole components consist of an EM transmitter, a gap sub and
a power source. The gap sub electrically isolates the drill string above
the gap sub from that below. An electromagnetic field is created when
a positive electrical charge is applied above the gap. A key feature of the
system is two-way communication.

1.

The
operator
can use EM to talk
down to the tool easily
and quickly without
disrupting the drilling
process, he says. This
has tremendous benefits. First, it allows the operator to adjust the tool
for conditions on the fly. For example, if there is noise interference on
a particular frequency, the tool can be commanded to transmit on a
different frequency.
The tool can be told to transmit at a high power to get through
a difficult formation or at a low power setting to reduce battery draw
and expense.
Downlinking allows the operator to select the optimum data
and sequences for the drilling operation underway, Roberts says. For
example, the tool can be instructed to send pressure more frequently
upon drilling into an unknown formation.
SureShot EM works with the entire family of APS directional and
LWD sensors and offers a drop-in alternative to the APS mud pulse
transmitter.
The largest application is for directional drilling, providing
directional measurements and gamma, Roberts says. The higher data
rate of EM lends it to LWD work. Interest has also been expressed for use
in coal mining. 860/613-4450; www.aps-tech.com.
