ROUGH DRAFT
English - A status symbol
Historically, our society has always pertinaciously shunned any attempt to
change its lifestyle. That's why Sir Syed Ahmed Khan faced a lot of scorn and
contempt when beginning his movement to educate the masses. Fast forward a
hundred years later, English is the official language of Pakistan. It's used in
offices, taught in schools and is spoken everywhere. Sir Syed's dream come
true? Not quite. Our people like adopting trends that dispel their inferiority
complexes; at least in their opinion. English has become a status symbol and
even our messed up chauvinism can't get us to talk in Urdu, the language we
should be using. Speaking English in foreign, often fake, accents has become
increasingly popular among the youth. Theres no denying that English is an
important language and is essential for any potential job but that is no excuse to
stop conversing in our native lingo. How many times have you seen the Chinese
President speak in English? He's proud of his language and he's not afraid to
show it to the world. Urdu is an evanescent language; rapidly deteriorating. It's
time we stop conforming to our society's rules and change the status quo. It's
time we start showing a little respect to the languages of our forefathers.
Speaking English, just to appear "cultured", is idiotic. At the end of the day, its
our perspective on life that determines what we speak. Be proficient in English
but don't be a mental slave. Break free.
