Langdon finally
receives flood
relief
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor
Albeit months of waiting and lowered expectations, Rocky View County and Chestermere received the thumbs up for anticipated provincial
disaster funding to aid in the repairs of damages
sustained in last years vigorous July rainstorm.
The Alberta government announced an estimated $9 million to be allocated from the Disaster
Recovery Program (DRP) to eligible residents of
Langdon - a hamlet in Rocky View County - and
Chestermere.
On July 12, 2015, a significant rainstorm swept
through the areas causing damage to roughly 50
homes in Langdon and some county infrastructure. Numerous lightning strikes hit several control
panels, and residents responded with pumps and
rented equipment to detour the water away from
the hamlet when the system failed.
It was your 100-year-rain event, said Randy
Smith, manager of fire services and instructor of
emergency management. There was so much rain
in such a short period of time that the facilities
could not handle moving the water away from the
community. Then, with the lightning strikes and
the pumping system going down at the retention
pond, it just added to it and a lot of basements
were flooded.
The DRP focuses on helping eligible applicants
with funds for repairs to their properties that are
not covered by insurance, and aims to restore the
property back to conditions observed prior to the
disaster.
While the program does not cover damage
deemed entirely caused by sewer backup, assistance may be available where the damage is a result of a combination of groundwater flooding and
sewer backup.
By providing disaster relief to residents whose
homes were damaged by the July flood, its my
hope we can relieve some of the anxiety and financial stress caused by the storm, said Danielle Larivee, minister of Municipal Affairs in a statement.
This support is one way our government is
working to help the municipalities of Chestermere
and Rocky View County recover and rebuild.
Since an application was submitted to the Alberta government on July 29, the announcement of
approval after a nearly half-a-year wait time was
welcomed in the hamlet but proved unexpected.

New Years party unexpectedly interrupted

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Regardless of an abrupt overflow of
wastewater that caused those in attendance to evacuate and shut down the
event an hour early, more than 500 patrons spirits werent dampened at the
third annual Celebration of Lights New
Years party deemed to have been the
most successful yet.
A frozen pipe caused the sewer to
back up at the Livestock Pavilion shortly before 8 p.m. on Dec. 31. When the
product emerged in the mens bathroom and spread to the nearby stalls,
those in attendance vacated the premises in time for the viewing of the fireworks.
It happened to us one day last spring
when a client was in there, and so it
kind of hit us again, said Herb McLane,
general manager for the Strathmore
and District Agricultural Society. But
the event was winding down. When it
occurred, we were probably only half
an hour away from the fireworks and
so we just shut it down a little bit earlier.
McLane, who missed the fireworks to

deal with the issue, contacted EPCOR

who checked out the problem, confirmed the ice blockage, and thawed
it with a tiger torch, before running
hot water through the pipe. While the
event was shut down almost an hour
earlier than expected, organizers said
it was the most successful New Years
party yet.
It was unbelievable, and it was probably our best season so far in the eight
years of the park, said Rose Hamrlik,
president of the Celebration of Lights
Christmas Park.
This was probably the most visitors
weve had. Our third annual New Years
party was a very great success. We
probably had over 500 people in the
Livestock Pavilion alone and a couple
hundred on the grounds.
Overall, the park featuring the Celebration of Lights and the New Years
party - experienced attendance numbers
close to 2,000 mainly from surrounding
areas. The New Years party included
a magician, spin-to-win, raffles, a bigger dance contest, and lots of free food
and drinks. With the popularity of the
events increasing, McLane is aware the
problem requires a permanent solution.

Now its happened a couple times

with clients and the public in there, we
dont want that to happen of course,
McLane added. I think there are some
remedial measures we can hopefully
make. Maybe some insulation, thats
been discussed, perhaps some hot wiring at the critical points, those kinds of
things.
I think well come up with a solution
and try to mitigate it from happening
again. I think everyone had a great time
and the fireworks were grand I understand.

Strathmore business owner creates change

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Knowing he may only have a month
left in Strathmore before packing his
bags to pursue a 15-year-old dream,
Mohammad Farhan sold the Taj Indian
Cuisine determined to tackle social issues locally and globally while disproving misconceptions about his and other
faiths.
Over a decade ago, when he was
only 13 years old, Farhan confided in
his best friend that he wanted to have
an impact on the world and help those
in need. Then, just over a year ago, he
launched the House of Dreams organization, made up of nearly 50 volunteers - mostly students all with different backgrounds and religions - who
are working tirelessly to build orphanages around the world. Having nearly
reached their target of just over $33,000
money required to build the nonprofits first orphanage in Faisalabad,
Pakistan Farhan is hoping to have all
funds collected by the end of January,
also the organizations first year anniversary, to travel to the country and begin construction.
If you donate to any organization,
what I believe is that only one per cent
of the money goes to the people that
need it, and I dont like that, and so
our main goal is to show people were
doing something and were not taking
your money for the hell of it, were going there ourselves building it, and we
book our own tickets, said Farhan.
There are a lot of orphans [in Pakistan]. Literally four and five years olds
polishing shoes, sleeping on the road,
eating out of the garbage and drinking
water out of the gutter line. I ask people, can you do that? We cant.
If something falls off a plate onto

the floor we dont even pick that up

and eat it. For the people eating out
of the garbage and drinking out of the
gutter line, I feel for them.
With only two major events and over
the course of less than 12 months, the
organization has already raised $26,000
towards the project. The funds will aid
in the construction of the facilities,
playground, kitchen area, security and
gated area that will house 30 kids.
Once the orphanage is up and running, will ensure upkeep and salaries
for staff and teachers.
Farhan, who grew up in Calgary but
was born in Pakistan, returned several times to his birth country and is
the fourth generation in his family to
take care of orphans and those destitute. Having volunteered with mosques
and temples in Calgary, he is hoping to
expand and reach out to churches and
other organizations and individuals to
work together. In turn, he is hoping
to unite people of all different background and religions, and steer the
negative misconceptions surrounding
some of these religions.
I have to show people that Islam
does not teach, go shoot somebody,
go kill somebody, go blast something
off, he said. This organization is dealing from kids, to animals, to parents,
to elder abuse to everybody. We have
to learn to be human first and then we
can say Im a Jew, Im a Christian, Im
a Muslim. All that begins with helping
someone.
While the organizations main concern is heavily focused on orphans
with future prospects of orphanages in
other countries such as India, Cambodia, and South Africa in sight Farhan
is already planning on fighting against
elderly abuse and high suicide rates
among the younger generation in Cal-

gary and plans to have an impact in

Strathmore.
As a kid Ive been growing up Ive
been going to school, I had money, I
had cars, I had everything, but at the
end of the day nothing made me happy, he added. There arent very many
orphans in Strathmore and Calgary, but
theres a lot of elder abuse and a younger crowd thats just learning to grow.
In Calgary, a lot of the kids are committing suicide due to drugs, friends,
love, bullying, they cant talk to their
parents so they end up doing stupid
things. My main goal is to get them
into the right environment. Get them
off media, get them to go out there and
play activities.
The organization is currently still fundraising for the remaining dollars for
the Pakistan House of Dreams orphanage project. As soon as the funds are
raised, Farhan said he is going to fly to
Pakistan for a duration of three months
for the project to be started and completed. However, before then the volunteers are planning to host an event
in January to educate the public on the
organizations intentions. For Nadia Pir,
who joined the non-profit at the beginning of last year, it is important that
the organization give back to Canadian
communities.
If we only help out middle eastern
countries once again were going to create that difference oh were only helping the brown people, but if we help
out people in Calgary too, we want to
put the word out there that were just
not for the brown people, were here
for the white, for anyone, she added.
Anyone who needs help were here to
help them out. We dont want to have
that difference with the race or religion.
People or kids or anyone that needs

Local business owner Mohammad Farhan sold

of travelling to Pakistan and build an orphanage

New Years resolutions to the people of Strathmore-Brooks

DEREK FILDEBRANDT
MLA Strathmore-Brooks

As 2015 comes to a close and 2016 dawns, many Albertans
are scribbling down a few New Years resolutions: lose weight
or learn a second language, things like that. But while you
may be reviewing the promises that you made to yourself in
2015, I am reviewing the promises that I made to you in 2015.
Ive gone back through all of the articles that I wrote in the
Brooks Bulletin, Strathmore Times, Strathmore Standard and
Bassano Times to recount as many of those promise as I can
fit in this article and report on them to you.

Strathmore Legion Branch #10

NEWS

By Irene Knappe, Secretary / PR / Membership

Well, Christmas is done and become history, New Years has also been and
gone, and a New Year has just begun! We, at the Legion, hope you all had a
terrific time with your loved ones. And now, its onward and upward for us all!
The Legion is ready to begin 2016, and for starters will hold initiations of the
old and new Executive on Friday, January 8th, at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome
to attend.
There is nothing too much to report, as yet, because were all taking a breather, but our FaceBook Page is seeing lots of activity. You can join there as well.
Please lets us not forget our homeless ones, be they Veterans or not. The
Food Bank is still in need
and we must do what we
can to help those who
cannot help themselves.
If the Governments, Federal or Provincial, do not
see it in their mandates to
help, its up to the rest of
us to find it in our souls.
Im sure we do not have
to look far. Lets make
2016 the best ever!!!

LEST WE FORGET / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Thought for
the Week
~
With
privilege
comes
responsibility

Now, my only disclaimer here is that as an opposition MLA, I can only push the government on
policies, and cannot force the NDP government to
do anything due to their majority.
Financial Accountability: On March 16, I committed to fixing the PC accounting system that allows the government to keep billions in spending
from being reported in the annual deficit. This allowed the former government to spend most of
the $17 billion Sustainability Fund and take on $14
billion in new debt without reporting on it as a
deficit.
I personally met with the Finance Minister to
push for a restoration of accountable finances. He
made clear to me that the old system suited him
just fine and that no changes would be made.
I continued to push for this however in the legislature. I introduced amendments to the NDPs new
budgetary framework that would have fixed some
of the governments accounting practices. Unfortunately, the NDP voted each of these amendments
down.
Recall Legislation: On March 17 I committed
that I would push to give voters recall legislation
to hold your MLA accountable between elections.
This legislation would allow citizens to collect
enough signatures to force a by-election in a particular constituency if they felt that their MLA no
longer represented them.
Our neighbouring Wildrose MLA for Chesteremere-Rockyview, Leela Aheer, introduced Bill 206,
the Voter Recall Act as a private members bill in
November. Unfortunately, Wildrose was the only
party who spoke in favour of the bill and the NDP
recessed the house before it could come to a vote.
Get Big Money out of Politics: On March 23 I
promised you that I would fight to get the influence of big money out of politics. For too long,
corporations and unions would make the right donations to political parties and have those favours
returned in the form of subsidies, contracts and
other forms of special treatment.
In June, the NDP introduced a bill that would
ban corporate and union donations. The Wildrose,
Liberals and Alberta Party all supported it, however my colleagues and I argued that the bill still
left several major loopholes open.
Cut Spending Before Raising Taxes: On March 25
I promised that I would never raise taxes on everyday Albertans without first doing everything possible to ensure that your money was being spent
wisely. This followed the former governments
budget that raised taxes on the average Alberta
family by $2,400 without any significant reduction
in government expenditures.
Well as you know, we have an NDP government
in power, and raising taxes, debt and spending at
the same time is what they do. The NDP kept many
of the PC tax hikes, and added plenty of their own
on top of that including a $3 billion carbon tax, a
20 per cent increase in business taxes and a 50per
cent increase in personal income taxes on some
earners.

Ive spent many hours arguing against doing this

in the legislature, but in the end, the parties favouring higher taxes outvoted us.
Health and Seniors Care: On April 20 I committed to make seniors care and health care infrastructure a top local priority if elected. Ive reached
across the aisle to try and work with the NDP with
mixed results, but some progress.
We received final commitment from the government in the fall budget for the provincial portion
of funding for the Bassano Project, which will help
to provide a broad range of seniors care servicing
the entire Brooks and Newell region. Final signoff from Alberta Health Services (AHS) is still outstanding, but I am confident that it will come soon.
Ive been repeatedly pushing the government
privately in letters, and publicly in the legislature
to finally move forward on the desperately needed
upgrade to Strathmores busy emergency room.
While no progress is assured yet, we are beginning to see glimmers of hope. More information
will hopefully be coming soon.
As well, I have been working with the Brooks
and Region Health Foundation to secure the governments portion of the funding for a Brooks Dialysis Centre.
Ive made several visits to most of our seniors
homes in the constituency to speak directly to
those receiving and delivering services on the
front line. While many are happy with the care
they receive, some are not, and I am taking those
concerns directly to management. I will continue
to closely monitor the state of seniors care in our
constituency.
Stand Up for Rural Alberta: On April 20 I promised that I and the Wildrose would make rural Alberta a priority and that we would stand up for it
when pushed around by the government.
When the NDP introduced Bill 6 and tried to
ram it down the throats of farmers and ranchers
without any consultation, my colleagues and I did
everything in our power to slow it down. We filibustered the bill from the morning sitting of the
legislature until the early hours of the next days
morning to try and force the NDP to send the bill
to a committee to listen to farmers before passing
it into legislation.
In the end, the NDP invoked debate closure,
which effectively shuts the legislature down and
automatically passed the bill without further debate. Still, we managed to force major amendments
to the bill, which removed some of its most extreme and objectionable parts.
Resolutions for 2016 Space does not permit me
to go through every promise I made to you in
2015, but I have done my best to stay true to the
trust that you placed in me last year. It has truly
been an honour to represent you in the Legislative
Assembly of Alberta, and I will work as hard as I
possible can to do that as best as possible in 2016.
(Derek Fildebrandt is MLA for StrathmoreBrooks, the Wildrose Shadow Minister of Finance
and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee.)

Rosebud graduate Natalie Gauthier takes talents on tour

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Actor and musician Natalie Inga Gauthier, who
just acted in Rosebuds Wind in the Willows, is
performing a musical tour in January.
Gauthier, with Sonia Deleo, will give a house
concert in Rosebud, Sunday, Jan. 10, and a concert at Gravity Espresso and Wine Bar in Calgary,
Friday, Jan. 22.
Theyll also perform house concerts in Calgary
and Lethbridge, and a concert in Jasper, Alberta.
Gauthier will perform in an all-day music marathon at Gravity, Jan. 8. On Jan. 23, shell open
for Kray Van Kirk at a Gallery House Concert in
Calgary.
Gauthier is emphasizing her musical talents this
month, but she has diverse other talents which
never lie dormant. In 2015, besides acting in Wind
in the Willows, she performed with Stages Ignite
Festival, acting all four characters in a one-woman
show titled Beard. She attended the month-long
Manitoulin Conservatory for Creation and Performance on Manitoulin Island, Ont., living in a tent
and sharing a communal kitchen. She also recorded and played live with John Wort Hannam, and
recorded with Joe Vickers.
The musical partnership with Sonia Deleo
also developed in 2015, though theyd met two
years earlier. Last fall, Deleo said she was looking for a band to perform with, and something
just clicked, Gauthier said. We very, very gingerly said, Well, should we try and play music
together?... so we did, and the first night we got
together, we ended up accidentally co-writing a
song.
They discovered complementary musical styles,
writing songs of hope and love for our loved
ones, and moments of grief and loss.
And they have shared inspiration.

Ive always felt connected to (my grandmother) whenever Im making music, Gauthier said. I
feel that at least some of my passion for singing
and making music came from her.
In fact, her grandmothers name, Inga, is Gauthiers middle name. Deleo finds the same kind of
inspiration in her grandfather Deleo.
Gauthier is thankful for the partnership, especially since she knows she wouldnt have been
ready for it when they met in 2013.
For the last two years, it was a very, very intense period of growing pains, she said. I feel
actually like Im in a season of reaping the benefits of that ... not to say that I have no ways in
which I want to grow, but Im actually just wanting to enjoy that. Im in a season of relishing the
wonderful life that I have.
But relishing life doesnt mean Gauthier rests
on her laurels. From February to June, shell act
with Evergreen Theatre, touring schools with the
play Legend of Four: A Science Fantasy. She looks
forward to more performances at Gravity Espresso and Wine Bar, to singing on the upcoming album of her friend Kathryn Smith, and to coming
back to Rosebud to record her own new album.
And the theatre audition season is coming up.
For extra income, Gauthier has eight other jobs
that I do here and there periodically, but she considers that a gift too.
I spend my energy in performance, she said,
but non-artistic jobs fill her tank in different ways.
I view it as being a well-rounded human being
with lots of different skills. Im not trapped only

Rockyford 4-H Beef club reflects

on 2015
HAILEY KENNEY
Rockyford 4-H Beef Club
Reporter

We started our season off
with our first meeting on Oct. 6.
This year our club has 21 members. Our club leaders are Bonnie Lintick, Johanne Lawn, and
Dawn Kalbhen.
The following members make
up our new club executive: Julia
Newell (club president), Blake
Wenstrom (vice president), Reece Kenney (treasurer), Presley
Kalbhen (secretary), Hailey Kenney (news reporter) and Darren
Newell (district rep.).
On Nov. 11 we had our weighin day at Newells farm. The
weather cooperated with us
and the weigh-in went great. I
would like to thank the Newell
family for hosting the weigh-in
and send a big thanks to Wheatland County for lending us the
scale and the RFID tag reader.
Our club weighed in 25 steers
with the average weight of 758
pounds.

Financial institution offered Christmas surprise

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Tears of disbelief and excitement
flowed at the end of last year, after
several Strathmore residents received
an unexpected act of kindness at the
Strathmore Chinook Financial, relieving
some financial burden and ensuring an
enjoyable holiday season.
A total of 81 members in 13 Alberta
communities had their bills paid through
the Connect First Credit Unions Make
Money Make a Difference initiative just
before December. The $40,000 Albertawide spending spree provided peace
of mind to three Strathmore-based individuals by settling phone, mortgage,
rent, credit card, vision care, and utility
bills.
It really makes you happy and proud
to work for a company who cares about
their members and their people in that
way, said Kimberley Sharkey-Thompson, regional branch manager for Chi-

Scot Hadden, president of the Chinook

Financial division. Our mission of our
new credit union is Making Money
Make a Difference and we thought that
was pretty timely this year and we
want to do the right thing in our communities with our members.
Hadden recalled one instance in particular where a woman a former victim
of domestic abuse came in from the
womens shelter. After finding out that
$600 would pay off some of her bills,
the branch ensured her less financial
stress over the holiday season. While it
was emotional for the individual, it was
also emotional for the staff, he said.
The video recording of residents reactions to the unexpected surprise has
already received nearly 18,000 views
on YouTube. While Hadden said no
formal plans have yet been created to
continue with the program for the coming year, the message of the mission,
Making Money Make a Difference, will
remain ongoing.

Province dishes out millions

I didnt think it was going to be approved and I know the City of Calgary from
their Snomageddon application was turned down, and because it took so long I
thought maybe this was something that wasnt going to get funded, Smith said.
I was pleasantly surprised and happy to see that were able to support Langdon

Its not insurance, its to kind of put you back on your feet. If you had an 84-inch

If you smoke while pregnant, think of this.

Nicotine narrows the blood vessels in the placenta
and this may affect the structure and function of the
babys brain. This can result in a greater chance of
more negative behaviour in young children, so the
terrible twos might be even more terrible.
According to the Canadian Kidney Foundation,
you are never too old to be an organ donor. Many
seniors have very healthy organs. The oldest
Canadian donor was 102 but many are well into their
70s and beyond. Have you registered as an organ
donor yet?
Just a reminder if you are traveling this winter.
Carry all your medications in your carry-on luggage

As we age, our ability to get a good nights sleep
seem to diminish. Non-prescription sleep aids often
contain a drug that has side effects that mimic those
symptoms in the aged like confusion, dry mouth,
constipation and dizziness. Prescription sleeping

when going to the bathroom during the night.
There are many ways to help people sleep better.
Talk to our pharmacists for advice. Its important to

Town says
goodbye to a
productive year
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

In contrast to Albertas economic downturn, numerous accomplishments and positive growth marked up the Town of
Strathmores 2015 calendar, signaling a strong heart beat to
march into a promising new year.
Praised as a stronger and more accomplished year than
previous, the town noticed an increase in local businesses,
tens of millions of dollars worth of building permits, and the
completion of much-needed infrastructure upgrades.
Overall it was a good year, quite a bit better than the last
few years, said Dwight Stanford, chief administrative officer
for the Town of Strathmore. For example, two, three, four
years ago, we used to build new homes, and there mightve
been 20 or so. This year, we had 70 new single-family homes,
plus we had quite a few multi-family. Some people said its
been a slow year, but it was good for us.
Strathmore had a total of 70 new single-family homes
build last year, dealt out over $40 million in building permits around town, and added new subdivisions. However,
the year also included the completion of roadwork to Lakeside Boulevard, and 4th Avenue both significant projects
in 2015. Pathways, specifically along George Freeman trail,
also received paving facelifts, and a crosswalk was installed
near Edgefield.
Movement was also noticed in the downtown and elsewhere in the community, where 38 new businesses opened
their doors, including two new shoe stores, a sporting goods
store, and a health food market and deli.
Furthermore, Stanford strongly commended all the hours
spent on approving a Kindergarten to Grade 9 school site in
Edgefield, the nearly $400,000 construction of the outdoor
rink, an increase in doctors, hosting the Alberta 55+ Summer
Games from which a sustainability committee was born, collaboration with H&H Huxted for their work on developing a
Class 1 composting site and hiring consultants to bring forth
a detailed fire study in February of 2016.
While the Strathmore and District Historical Society also
became active, and the town leased 20 acres for the introduction of the Calgary Kart Racing Club, the town continues
to work with the Western Irrigation District on storm water
issues. However, Stanford acknowledged the financial hardships affecting many residents, and is aware it will impact
the year to come.
I personally think itll be a bit slower, because of the economy, said Stanford. We know theres a big need for more
recreation in the community, particularly ice surfaces, soccer
and indoor soccer, and so on. So were going to work on
those kind of things and see what we can do.

JUSTIN SEWARD

The CFR Bisons looked like a rejuvenated bunch to start 2016 as they
were able to cruise to a 5-0 win over
the Knights of Columbus Pats on Jan.
3 to maintain the third spot in the
South Division.
Forward Brett Trentham had a twopoint game and thought it was nice to
provide offense, considering he was
out most of December with an injury.
It was awesome, said Trentham.
We had new line mates today and I
thought we had a lot of chemistry. I
was getting set up so I couldve had a
couple more. It was good team effort.
The line was going, the boys were go-

ing, every bit counts.

He added it was nice to have a game
like this where the team can increase
the goal totals and reward goaltender
Ryan Simpson with a shutout.
It was reassuring for us, said Trentham. We were getting pretty lazy
during the Macs, we knew it, we were
tired. We took a couple days off and
the boys rested up. Now I think were
going to have a good push in the second half.
He thought the most effective part
of the teams game was that they were
moving their feet and moving the
puck at a good pace.
Bisons assistant coach Dave Attwood
thought it was really important to get
a good start after a mediocre Macs

tournament.
To start with a win and on the right
foot was really important for us, said
Attwood.
I really liked where we started in
our defensive end. We had really good
support there from all of our players
and that allowed us to enter the neutral zone and into their end and set up
some chances.
Tyler Petrie led the attack with two
goals, while Trentham, Liam Izyk and
Kaden Hanas scored in the win.
The Bisons will be in tough this
weekend as they face the top two
teams in the South Division on the
road in Red Deer on Jan. 8 (8 p.m.)
and the Macs tournament champion
Calgary Flames Jan. 10 (11:15 a.m.).

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Kings came out guns
blazing on Jan. 2 and it showed on the
scoreboard with a 5-0 shutout win over
the High River Flyers, distancing themselves from the visitors in the standings.
We got ourselves pretty fired up before
the game, said local product Lucas Jones,
who had a two-goal outing. I think it was
a good way to start the momentum especially being short guys. A lot of guys
came in and played bigger roles, especially forwards playing defense. It was just
big to get that first win of the year.
He feels pretty lucky to be playing with
line mates Jacen Bracko and Chris Williams as they have been able to work well
together, and gives them the credit for
helping with his performance on the ice.
Weve had a lot of fun playing with
each other, said Jones. Weve worked
off each other good. They (the goals)
were pretty much similar. We had a couple of guys working hard. Blake (Bishop)
worked hard to get the first one, I was
fortunate to be in the right spot at the
right time.
He added that their defensive play was
strong and no one did more than they
had to and did a good job.
Williams notched two goals, while
Booker Pretty Youngman scored one goal
to round out the offense behind Jones.
The Kings will be in Banff on Jan. 8
(8:30 p.m.) before hosting Okotoks on
Jan. 9 (8 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family

Sixty-five players will have
the opportunity to interact with
current and former Strathmore
Reds midget triple-A players at
the 12th annual Strathmore Minor Baseball Association Winter Camp, providing them with
a chance to learn and improve
their skills in baseball.
I think its a good introduction for a lot of them, said head
instructor Zane Anderson. A lot
of kids havent played baseball
before. We really try to start
off pretty basic and get a little
more complex as the camp goes
on. Its good for the kids who

it out, which is nice to see.

Anderson said that as the
camp goes on the kids will
build on skills such as catching the ball, throwing the ball,
all the way up to hitting certain
types of pitches, and depending
on the age groups, the older
kids will get into more complex
techniques.
Anderson is going into his
eighth year coaching the camp
and seeing players that he has
coached sharing their knowledge of baseball with the kids
is gratifying in itself.
The kids get a lot out of it,
said Anderson. Its one thing

to tell them to do something,

but its another thing to actually get them to teach a kid to
do something. Its funny a lot
of the players have the same
stuff they need to work on as
the players in the camp. They
can see it sort of from a different perspective which is really
good for them.
Above all else, Anderson
hopes the kids will feel the love
of baseball. He added that its
a great stepping-stone for the
players heading into the season.
The camp begins on Jan. 8
and will run once a week until
Feb. 26. More information can

The CFR Bisons put up a valiant effort in their last game of the Macs tournament but lost to the Cariboo Cougars 5-3 at the Max
Bell Centre on Dec. 29.

Cougars oust Bisons from Macs

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

For the second game in a row, the CFR Bisons
were entrenched in a tough battle against the Cariboo Cougars, who played a structurally sound
game en route to defeating the Bisons 5-3 and
eliminating them from the Macs tournament on
Dec. 29 at the Max Bell Centre.
Down 2-0 after the first period, head coach
Sandy Henry said they put themselves in an unfortunate situation early on, starting off behind,
and that playing four games in four days was hard
mentally.
I think we learned something about our team
that we do have some bite when we need to have
it, said Henry. I think we were tired and I saw
that in us. And not so much that our legs wont
move. Its just making those key decisions, and the
details slip away out of the game when youre that
tired. That was the difference in the first, we made
a couple of mistakes, and bang its in the net.
However, Henry thought they made the necessary adjustments and were able to limit the Cougars rush to the nets. At that point he felt they
were able to take a little bit of control of the game.
I think you saw, even when it was 4-2, we didnt

roll over and just started coming hard again, said

Henry. Im happy with the boys. I thought they
were standing around more in the third. The little
details of the game still werent quite there. I know
theyre disappointed, but when you break it out
into what you learn from it, its going to help us in
the long run.
He added that some rest wouldve helped in between the first two and the last two games.
He also said there was no excuse in the Lloydminster game because they were on the same
schedule and against the Cougars, a better start
was needed.
The teams effort was evident, because they
were able to battle back many times. However, Bisons forward Gary Haden said they couldnt get
that next bounce and that four games in four days
showed how well their condition was.
You got to be ready for everything, said Haden.
Any time you dont win youre disappointed for
sure. We worked hard and let the chips fall where
they may and it wasnt our day today.
When all the lines play how they can play and
when we had four lines rolling and scoring, no
one can stop us,
Tyson Scott, Kyle Gordon, and Brett Trentham
scored in the loss.

Wheatland teams look for more consistency

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Chiefs had an ideal
start to the second half of the season
with a 5-1 road win in Lethbridge on
Jan. 2; however, their offence dried up
against a stingy Taber team the next
night on route to being defeated 3-1 on
home ice.
We need more consistency, said
Chiefs captain Brad Hendricks. We
have a good effort one night and the
next night not everyones going. Theres
good things but when youre not working, giving a 60-minute effort its hard
to win against a team like that.
Hendricks said you could feel
amongst the guys that there was a lot
of negativity on the bench throughout
the game and he thinks the team needs
to find more positive energy and put
forth more of an effort moving forward.
The effort wasnt there really, said
Hendricks. I think when youre a first
place team the only good thing to come
from a loss is kind of a wake up call
that teams are right behind you but
youre not going to win them all. Youre
going to have work every night to win.
He added that in the first game the
Chiefs were a lot faster of a team that
walked all over Lethbridge and took
advantage of their opportunities.
Ryan Skytt scored two goals while
Riley Romashenko, Zach Suntjens and
Jason Hobson provided the offence in
Lethbridge.
Skytt scored the lone goal in the loss
to Taber.
The local double-A midget team was
in Calgary to face the CBHA Rangers
on Jan. 6 (result unavailable as of press
time) and will play in Olds on Jan. 10.
WARRIORS WIN
Meanwhile, the Wheatland Warriors
began the New Year with a pair of road
wins over Airdrie 7-2 on Jan. 2 and 3-2
over the West Central Tigers on Jan. 3.
Head coach Cody Brown was content
with his teams effort.
Coming off a break there is always
some rust no matter what you do, but I
thought the boys showed up and definitely had no problem finding the back
of the net, said Brown. Some things
do get sloppy, but thats to be expected.
I think definitely I cant be disappointed with the start we got.
He added that it was hard to say what
the outcome of the game against Airdrie would be after the break, but doing
the little things right paid off for the
boys.
Theyre at the same disadvantage as
we were, said Brown. Obviously we
did some things right and it was a good
game to get the dust off and get back in
the groove for the home stretch.
The local double-A bantam team then
faced a hardworking Tigers team and
Brown said they were able to gut out a
tight affair.
The boys didnt quit, said Brown.
We fought right until the end there
and got into some penalty trouble late
up by one goal. Guys put their bodies
on the line, made those gritty plays and

The Wheatland Chiefs were inconsistent all game long en route to a 3-1 loss
to the Taber Golden Suns at the Strathmore Family Centre on Jan. 3.

we ended up locking it out.

In Airdrie, Max Schafer,
Kyle Bray and Ben Kruse all
had two goals apiece while
Brandon Kasdorf added one
in the win.
Ben Slemp led the way
with two goals, while Kasdorf scored one against the
Tigers.
The Warriors will host the
Red Deer Steel Kings in Hussar on Jan. 9 (5 p.m.) before
hitting the road to Cochrane
to tangle with the Timberwolves on Jan. 10.
BRAVES BOUNCE BACK
The Wheatland Braves got
a wake-up call, as they were
thumped 12-3 in Airdrie on
Jan. 2, but surprisingly head
coach Carl Knudsen was not
angered by his players performance.
I dont think the score reflected the game accurately,
said Knudsen. We definitely
got outplayed and beat by a
very good Airdrie team. We
didnt play our best by any
means for sure, but then
again Airdrie is a top-tiered
team. We know what were
up against being the first
time weve seem them.
He thought the second period was their best period,
but knows that there is still
work to be done to compete
with these tough teams.
It was a pretty even pe-

riod, he said. I think they

only scored one goal that
period. We just sent a message that were maybe not
as skilled and still think we
need to work hard to compete with these teams.
Tegan Skehar, Koby Gosling and Avery Hansen
scored in the loss.
The Braves were able to
turn it around the next day
in Taber as they got caught
in a seesaw battle and came
out on top with an 11-8 win.
It was a little more engaged, said Knudsen. We
did a better job of moving
the play up the ice and into
the offensive zone. We put
down a few more passes and
things are going better. We
would have a three, four, five
goal lead and theyd get it
back. I was a little concerned
that we couldnt shut them
down in the third period, but
thats the way she goes.
Tristan Zandee had three
goals, while Ray Warrack
had two goals. Hansen, Matthew Quebec, Adam Kirkpatrick, Trey Gillis, Bryce Benfield and Nolan Mahussier
each scored in the win.
The local double-A peewee team will play host the
Lethbridge Hurricanes White
in Hussar on Jan. 8 (7:30
p.m.) before heading to Olds
to take on the Grizzlys on
Jan. 9 (2:15 p.m.).

THE PRODIGAL SON - SEE LUKE 15:11-24

This is the story of a young man weary of the
restraints of living at home. Things came to the
point that he decided he had to get away. His
wealthy, loving father gave the lad his
inheritance, and he left for a place he thought
he would have freedom to do whatever he
pleased. He had the money to satisfy every
desire. Because money attracts company, he
soon had a group of friends to help him spend
his wealth in high living.
But the hopes and dreams he had nurtured
while a boy at home soon sank into oblivion,
along with the stability and security of his spiritual upbringing. His inheritance squandered,
he applied for a job and was assigned to look
after hogs. For a Jew, nothing could have been
worse. Jesus Jewish audience understood
the pits of degradation and humiliation He
was describing. The young man, determined
to find liberty, instead found himself a virtual
slave. Friendless, starving, and sick at heart, he
forced himself to eat hogs food to survive.
In this narrative we see an amazing picture
of the hopelessness of a life divorced from
God. It may take time for us to realize how
poverty-stricken we are when we separate
ourselves from the love of the heavenly Father,
but that day will come. All the while, God is
desperately seeking to find ways to influence
us to return home.
The young man ultimately came to his senses,
realizing that the servants in his fathers house
were better off than he was. In his misery, the
boy remembered his fathers love. And the
memories of that love began to beckon him
home.
Finally, he made the decision to head back and
to confess his waywardness. He decides he
will tell his father, Ive sinned against heaven
and you; Im not worthy to be called your son,
but let me be like one of your employees.
Weak from hunger in a land of famine, with only
rags left for clothes, he finally left the pigpens
and set out for the place he grew up as a child.
The runaway had no conception of the sadness
that had overwhelmed his father when he left.
He never dreamed of the shadow that came
over the whole house when reports filtered

back of his wild partying.

And no one could have convinced him that
every day his father sat, watching, waiting,
for his sons return. Yet now, with weary and
painful steps, he turned eagerly toward home to
beg for a servants position.
While still a considerable distance from the
house, the father recognized his son and ran
to meet him, hugging him in a long, clinging,
emotional embrace. To protect his son from
being observed in such a destitute condition,
the father took off his own beautiful coat and
placed it around the boys shoulders.
Overcome by such a loving reception, the
young man began to sob his repentance
speech. But the father would hear none of
it. He had no place in his household for a
servant-son; his lad must have the very best
the house could provide. The father told his
servants to bring the finest clothes and a ring
for his hand, to find fine shoes for his feet and
to prepare a feast so everyone could celebrate.
And there would be a theme at this celebration:
The dead son is alive; the lost son has been
found.
What a vastly different perception this boy now
had of his father! He had always thought of him
as rather stern and severe. But no longer. In
his great need he saw the true character of his
father. Which is what this story is all about. In
our rebellion, we often think of God as severe
and stern, demanding in His requirements. But
when you have been away a long time and are
spiritually hungry, dressed in the rags of sin
and guilt, then youll see how fully loving and
accepting the heavenly Father really is.
When you take even one step toward your
Father in repentance, He will run to wrap you in
His arms of love. He will forgive your sins and
never remember them again. Jeremiah 31:34.
Dont wait or try to clean yourself up so you can
be good enough to come to Jesus. If we waited
to be good enough, we would never come.
Jesus is waiting for you, calling you, yearning
for you. All heaven will celebrate when you
come home.

Raiders claim silver

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Rocky Mountain Raiders midget
triple-A female hockey team exceeded
their own expectations at this years
Macs tournament by making it to the
finals for the first time, resulting in a
silver medal.
Shortly after the Raiders took to the
ice on Jan. 1, they secured a 1-0 lead
going into the second period.
Despite making it through the round
robin with a strong finish, which catapulted them into the finals, the team
was unable to sustain the momentum
and instead walked away with a second
place finish.
It was definitely nice to make it to
the finals, said assistant coach Casey
Irving.
Especially coming off of last year
and then this year getting that much
further and getting a chance to play in
the final, and play for that trophy, was
a lot of fun.
While teamwork proved significant
for the Raiders in the tournament, it
wavered during the last two periods of
the final game.
Strathmore product Hailey McCallum, one of four local players on the
team, noticed the drop in energy on
the ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
After the first period everybody was
just all excited and were like okay

we can bring this home, 40 more minutes, said McCallum. But after those
two goals everybody just seemed to not
care and it was a big disappointment
for the ones who really wanted it.
The team was fortunate to have a
strong core group of returning girls
who pushed the other girls to be better, resulting in them coming together
to find success right up until the final
game.
They took care of themselves in between those games and made sure they
were able to perform at their best, said
Irving.
Just as a team they really pulled up
their socks and pushed that much further to get to the finals. The biggest
strength is that we have a good core
returning group of girls and they all experienced the Macs last year and having that experience were able to push
the new girls and have them come
along and come together as a team.
She said local goalie Erin Fargey
played an instrumental role in helping
the team by making the initial save and
furthering the team along in the tournament.
Other locals Libby Wheeler and
Paige Russell were also a part of the
returning group with experience in the
league.
Irving thinks they can learn from
their mistakes and focus on getting
back in the finals next year.

Jean Wyatt passed away on Saturday, January 2,

2016 at the age of 86 years.
