speeding
Speeding accounts for 50% of all teen traffic convictions
Drivers 15-19 have the highest traffic conviction, collision and injury rates of any age group
Traffic collisions are the leading cause of death for teenagers
If I am under 18, my risk of a fatal collision is about 2.5 times that of an average driver
Teenagers have 2x as many collisions as any other age group while only driving half the
distance
Teen rate of collision per mile is 4x greater than the adult driver collision rate per mile
If you drink alcohol or have alcohol in the car between ages 13-21 the drivers license will be
suspended for a year or eligibility for one will be delayed. Also potentially will have to take a
DUI program.
Its against the law for a minor to use a cell phone while driving. You cannot respond to a
ringing phone and violating this will make you subject to fines. May only use cell phones to
contact law enforcement.
Give drivers right of way and eye contact is not enough to walk
When signal changes to green, look left, right then left again then yield right of way to any
vehicle then walk
Do not walk or jog bike lane unless there is no sidewalk
Everyone in the car including 8 yr old passengers or children 4 ft 9 or taller should be wearing
seatbelts. Younger or shorter children are seated in a restraint system.
Will get cited if anyone in car is not wearing seatbelt even if something is under 16 yrs.
Wearing a seatbelt increases chances of living 3-4 times through a collision.
Child under 8 yrs old could only sit in the front if all seats are taken, medical reasons, no rear
seats.
Children less than 1 yr, weight less than 20 lbs is riding in a rear facing restraints system then
a child may not ride in the front seat of an airbag equipped vehicle.
Airbag needs 10 inches to inflate, try to put children away from airbag path.
Never a good idea to leave a child unattended in a vehicle!
Illegal to leave 6year old or younger unattended in a motor vehicle with a fine and a
community education program. If child gets injured, penalties are much more severe.
Flashing red signal means to stop then proceed when safe
Solid yellow means to continue cautiously or stop if you can do so safely
Yellow around means proceed but be ready to obey the next signal which could be red or
green.
Flashing yellow means that you MUST slow down and be alert
Flashing yellow arrow means yield oncoming traffic and pedestrians then proceed with
caution
You will be cited if you block an intersection
If traffic signal blackout, proceed cautiously as if all intersections were controlled by stop
signs.
If you intentionally obscure a license plates readability, youll be fined.
Three sided yield sign indicates we must slow down and be ready tos top to let anyone/thing
pass before you
If you see a do not enter sign or wrong way, drive to side of road and stop then turn around
and return to road you were on. Road reflectors will shine red at night if you are on the wrong
path.
Diamond signs and or yellow signs indicate dangers ahead, warnings.

Pedestrian deaths are 22% of all traffic fatalities


Eye contact by pedestrian means they are ready to cross the road, yield to the pedestrian.
Stop vehicle 5 ft within cross walk, especially drivers of hybrids or electric vehicles.
45% of crashes and 21% of fatalities are at intersections
When turning left, keep wheels turned straight ahead while waiting to turn left so that you
dont get pushed to on coming traffic if a vehicle hits you.
When turning right, check for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Roundabouts are counter clockwise.
On a steep road, vehicle facing downhill must yield right of way bc more control.
Basic Speed Law: you may never drive faster than is safe for current conditins. \
Max speed on most CA high ways is 65 mph and 70mpg where posted.
Max speed is 55 on two lane undivided high ways
60 mph is 4 times as great as a 30 mph crash.
If you are towing vehicles try your best to drive on the right most. In a 4 lane road, go on
outer 2 which are slowest.
Within 500-1000 ft of a school, speed limit is 25 or as low as 15 if posted.
If you dont stop on a red flashing school bus you may be fined up to 1000.
Blind intersection speed limit: 15. You cannot see for `00 ft in either direction
Alley speed limit: 15 mpg
Near railroads: 15 mph within 100 ft and cannot see tracks for 400 ft. May drive faster if
controlled by gates or flag man.
Stop 15-50 feet before tracks.
Near streetcars, trolleys, busses: 10 mph. Business or residential districts: 25
Slow down or stop for animals if its safe.
Scan road 10-15 seconds ahead to spot hazards. Thats like a quarter of a mile on high way
and a block on normal roads.
Check rear view mirror every 2-5 secs
Three second rule between those infront of u and u. 4 secs when slippery, croded, heavy load,
bus nearby, merging.
If being tailgated, brake slowly before stopping to warn tailgater that you are slowing down.
To lose tailgater: change langes and let them pass you or pull off road.

Two sets of solid double yellow lines spaced 2 ft or more apart are a barrier that cannot make
a left or u turn across except at designated openings.
HOV lanes are for carpools, buses, motorcycles, low-emission vehicles
Lane located in the middle of a two way street of yellow solid lines outside and dashed inside,
go into that lane and then turn left only when safe. Use signal to warn other drivers.
If crowded, drive into turnout areas or lanes to let vehicles pass
Sharrows are places for bicycles
Width of safe bicycle passage: 3-4 feet
Must enter bicycle lane if turning. May part in bicycle lane if does not block bicyclists.
To make a left turn begin signaling at 100 feet, slow down, look left right let. A left turn
against a red light can only be made from a one way street onto a one way street.
To make right turns drive into bike lane no earlier than 200 feet and begin signaling at 100
feet.

Right turn against a red light, signal and stop and if there is no limit line enter the side wack.
You may not turn rightor left against a red arrow.

Cannot make u turn at or on a railroad crossing, on a divided highway by crossing curb or two
sets of double yellow lines shere other vehicles may hit you, on a one way streed
Headed downhill, turn your front wheels into the vurb or toward side of the road. Headed
uphill, turn your front wheels away from the curb and let vehicle roll back a few inches. If no
curb, turn wheels so the vehicle will roll away from the center of the road if the brakes fail.
White curb: stop long enough to pick up or drop off passengers or mail
Green: park for a limited time based on poseter
Yellow: stop no longer than time posted to load or unload passengers or freight. Drivers of non
commercial vehibles are usually required to stay witht eh vehicle
Red: no stopping, standing or parking except for buses when market
Blue: disabled ppl and fine of 1000 or jail for 6 months
Crosshatched: no parking
