EARLIER YEARS OF THE COMPANY
Carl von Lindes curiosity as an inventor, his persistence in the implementation of his
ideas and theoretical concepts, as well as his ability to recognise the requirements of his
customers and fulfil their desire for reliability and quality are all timeless factors for success.
At a sometimes staggering pace and with a great love of experimentation, Carl von Linde
created a new industry within just a few decades: refrigeration. His engineering company, the
Gesellschaft fr Lindes Eismaschinen, was characterized from the very beginning by
innovativeness and close customer relations.
Sketches and notes from Carl von Lindes early lecture drafts when he served as an instructor (1868-1879) at the
Polytechnic School in Munich (today TU Munich).
The thought immediately struck me: here was an area of mechanical thermodynamics that had not yet been
fully explored,
-Carl Von Linde, Aus meinem Leben und von meiner Arbeit.

DIVISIONS
Gases Division
INDUSTRIAL GASES
- produces and distributes the atmospheric gases oxygen, nitrogen and argon, all of
which are manufactured in our own air separation plants
- product portfolio also ranges from hydrogen, acetylene, carbon monoxide and
carbon dioxide, to shielding gases for welding applications, noble gases and high-purity
specialty gases
- they also develop and distribute procedures and systems for gas applications all
over the world in several technological application centers
- in addition, they provide customers with comprehensive support services and
technical equipment
- Linde is the world's largest supplier of welding and safety products
HEALTHCARE
- providing pharmaceutical and medical gas products and services that enable
healthcare professionals to provide optimal therapy for their patients in hospitals, clinics,
intermediate care centres, emergency centres and patients homes
- pharmaceutical and medical gases are used in the diagnosis or treatment of a
number of clinical conditions
- present in 70 countries, working to ensure our solutions are always delivered and
serviced to the highest possible standards of safety, quality and efficiency.
-combines
a
unique understanding of healthcare realities with continuous research and development
- In addition to oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy and anaesthesia, Linde Healthcare
provides medical gas solutions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, sleep
apnea and pain.
Engineering Division
- Plants for the production of hydrogen and synthesis gas, oxygen and olefins as well
as plants for natural gas treatment
- Process plants are some of the largest and most sophisticated building structures
ever built by mankind. Only a select few contractors are capable of designing and
constructing them.

PROCESS
Air is separated into its component gases through cryogenic system. (Temp = 0 - 72 K)
Main Stages of air separation includes:
- Filtration of air
- Compression of air
- Cooling of air
- Pre-purification of air mixture (Activated alumina)
- Heat exchanger
- Liquefaction of cooled gas
- Separation of air into Oxygen and Nitrogen
- Obtaining pure Oxygen and nitrogen
Raw Material and Products
Raw material is ambient air
Intermediate products:
- pure gaseous oxygen
- gaseous nitrogen
- gaseous argon
- gaseous hydrogen
Finished (final) products:
- liquid nitrogen
- liquid oxygen
- crude liquid argon
- pure liquid argon
Cryogenic air separation process for the production of gaseous pure oxygen and nitrogen with internal compression
and the production of liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen and liquid argon
