and Lydia.
Having preached from the Heidelberg Catechism for 35
years, and having written two volumes of sermons on it as
well as teaching a seminary course on Preaching from the
Heidelberg Catechism for decades, I am excited about this
European and Reformation tour, and look forward to playing
an active role in enjoying fellowship and historical sites with
friends from far and near. - Joel Beeke

Dr. Jason Van Vliet is professor of dogmatics at the Canadian Reformed Theological
Seminary in Hamilton, Ontario,
Canada. Previously, he was the
pastor of two Canadian Reformed congregations, one in
Ontario and one in British Columbia. He received his Th.D.
from the Theological University
in Apeldoorn, where he studied
with Dr. Herman Selderhuis. The title of his dissertation
is: Children of God: The Imago Dei in John Calvin and His
Context. He recently edited a festschrift entitled, Living
Waters from Ancient Springs: Essays in Honor of Cornelis
Van Dam. He has also contributed both scholarly and
popular articles to various journals. He preaches regularly on the Lords Day, including preaching from the
Heidelberg Catechism on Sunday afternoons. His love
for the Catechism finds expression in three projects he
is working on in anticipation of the 450th anniversary of
the Catechism: a conference on the Catechism in Hamilton, ON, in January 2013; the development of a new
Catechism website (www.heidelberg-catechism.com);
and the tour you are reading about in this brochure. He
and his wife Janet have been blessed with six children:
Curtis, Hannah, Ruth, Abigail, Philip and Joelle.
Ill never forget the time, as a theological student, when I
was explaining the basic truths of the gospel to someone who
was hearing them for the first time. As his interest increased,
I introduced him to the Heidelberg Catechism, quietly wondering to myself whether it might be a bit much for him at
that point. After reading it for a week, he said, How come
you didnt give me this treasure-chest sooner? Words wellspoken! The Heidelberg Catechism is truly a treasure-chest
full of many gospel-filled gems. I look forward to this tour
as an opportunity not only to explore fascinating historical
sites, but also as a time to revitalize our appreciation for, and
use, the gift which has been entrusted to the church in this
Catechism. - Jason Van Vliet

11, Thursday Departure
Check in at your airport for your overnight flight across
the Atlantic See you in the Netherlands tomorrow! (D)
12, Friday Amsterdam, Dordrecht
Welcome to Schiphol Airport, located outside the
Dutch capital city of Amsterdam. Following customs
formalities, a Witte Travel representative will orient you
to the airport facilities and provide you with the details
of your transfer to Dordrecht, where youll be assisted
with hotel check-in. Then youll have time to rest or
stroll through this attractive, historic city, which is often
called Dordt by the Dutch. This evening well meet our
traveling companions for dinner at the hotel. (B, D)
13, Saturday Dordrecht, Het Loo, Zwolle
Now that weve had a good nights sleep, were ready
for a formal introduction to Dordrecht. During our
guided walking tour, well see the Groothoofdspoort, the
main gate of the once-fortified city, some of the elegant
streets of the old town and the immense Grote Kerk. Of
course, well talk about the National Synod, which met in
Dordrecht in 1618 and 1619 and the pivotal role it played
in the development of Reformed doctrine. It was at this
synod that the Heidelberg Catechism was accepted as
an official confession of the Reformed Church. Leaving
Dordrecht, well travel north and east to Rijksmuseum
Paleis Het Loo. A royal residence for nearly 300 years, Het
Loo was given to the nation by Queen Juliana in 1969. It
is especially well known for its beautifully-maintained
gardens. Well have time to get a bite to eat and explore
the palace and its grounds. Of particular interest will
be the House of Orange and Religion exhibit, part
of a series of Refo500 exhibitions offered in celebration
of the 450th anniversary of the Heidelberg Catechism.
Then, well continue a bit further north to our hotel in
the Zwolle area where well check in for a two-night stay.
After dinner, those who wish can attend an organ concert
at the Grote Kerke in nearby Hasselt. (B, D)
14, Sunday Hasselt, Zwolle
Well return to the Grote Kerk in Hasselt for morning
worship. Dr. Herman Selderhuis will preach in Dutch
and English. Dr. Selderhuis is professor of church history
at the Theological University in Apeldoorn and the
director of Refo500. He is also a well-known author and
speaks at conferences and seminars throughout Europe
and the U.S. Well return to the hotel for a light lunch and
quiet time for rest and reflection. Dr. Beeke will lead a
late afternoon or evening worship service, which will be
offered at the hotel or a local church. Dinner is served at
the hotel. (B, L, D)
15, Monday
Bourtange, Groningen
A morning drive takes us north and east to Bourtange,
where well visit Vesting Bourtange, a beautiful 16thcentury Dutch fortress. Touring the fortress will give us
an opportunity to view an exhibition on the Heidelberg
Catechism. Then well head for Groningen, the capital
of the Netherlands northernmost province, also called
Groningen. Our plans include a get-acquainted tour and
a short recital with renowned Dutch organist Sietse De
Vries. Then well get settled at our hotel for dinner and
overnight. (B, D)

16, Tuesday Emden, Bad Bentheim, Duisberg

On the road again, we will travel into Germany and on
to Emden, an important port on the River Ems. Were
here to visit the Johannes Lasco Library. Founded in
1559, the library is a rich repository of collections relating
to Reformed Protestantism from the 16th century to the
present day. Later, well travel in a southerly direction
paralleling the Dutch-German border. Well have sack
lunches to eat en route to the spa town of Bad Bentheim.
Well visit Bad Bentheims mighty sandstone castle, whose
history dates back to the 11th century; and we may also
meet with one of the Reformed counts living in this area.
Our ultimate destination for today is the Duisberg area
where well have dinner and spend the night. (B, L, D)
17, Wednesday Cologne, Rhine Cruise, Heidelberg
A short drive to the south brings us to Cologne, the
majestic capital of the Rhineland. After a visit to the
colossal twin-spired Gothic Dom, well continue to
Boppard to embark on a short cruise on the Rhine River.
Famous for its scenery, this legendary waterway is
banked by vineyards, castle ruins and numerous picturepostcard villages. Back on land, well continue to Worms
to see the monument commemorating reformer Martin
Luthers appearance before the Imperial Diet in 1521.
Refusing to recant his heretical Protestant beliefs, he
was banished to
the outer reaches
of the Empire.
Then its on to
Heidelberg where
the Legacy tour
group will have
a two-night
stay. Those who
are also doing
the Heidelberg
Extension will
check in for a fivenight stay. Were on our own for dinner tonight. (B)
18, Thursday
Bretten, Maulbronn, Heidelberg
Heidelberg is known for its lovely setting, its beautiful
old castle and its university, one of the oldest stillfunctioning universities in Europe. Of course, for
Reformed Christians, Heidelbergs renown is due in large
part to the Heidelberg Catechism, which was written
here in 1563 and still forms the centerpiece of Reformed
worship. On our morning sightseeing tour, we will visit
Heidelberg Castle, standing mostly in ruins above the
Neckar River. Well also take a walk in the old town and
visit the Heiliggeistkirche Holy Spirit Church. You have
several options for the afternoon Explore Heidelberg
on your own, join an excursion to Bretten and Maulbronn
Abbey or attend the opening session of the Heidelberg
Conference on Reformed Theology. (See the insert for
more information.) Those who opt for the excursion will
visit the charming and very old town of Bretten where
Philip Melanchthon was born and tour Maulbronn
Monastery. Founded by the Cistercians in 1147, this
monastery became a Protestant school in 1556. It has
operated as a Protestant theological seminary since 1807.
This evening well all gather for dinner at the Crowne
Plaza. (B, D)

19, Friday Return / Rothenburg, Heidelberg

Those who are returning to the U.S. today will be transferred to Frankfurts Rhein-Main Airport to check in for
their return flights. (B, L)
Our Heidelberg Extension contingent will have the day
for conference attendance, leisure pursuits in Heidelberg
or an excursion to
Rothenburg ob der
Tauber, which lies
about 170 km east of
Heidelberg. A favorite
with visitors to
Germany, Rothenburg
is one of the most
perfectly-preserved
medieval cities in
Europe. On a walking
tour in the old town,
well see the Town
Hall, the Plnlein
and the picturesque
Herrngasse
Gentlemens Street
with mansions of
important personages
of the olden days. Spend the next few hours walking
on the ramparts atop the city walls or browsing in Kthe
Wohlfarts Christmas store and other appealing shops. (B)
20, Saturday Mainz, Heidelberg
Attend the closing session of the conference this morning,
visit one of Heidelbergs museums or enjoy a stroll on
the Philosophers Walk. For the afternoon, youre invited
on an excursion to Mainz Gutenberg-Museum, to see its
prize exhibit two original editions of the world-famous
Gutenberg Bible. (B)

We hope your journey through the Legacy of the Reformation

in the Netherlands and Germany has been inspiring and
refreshing! Thank you for being part of this transformational
