TITLE

TPS IN TIC - TAC - TOE

DESCRIPTION

This Teacher Support Material provides the students an
opportunity to play and work cooperatively and collaboratively using the
Think-Pair-Share strategy in identifying and solving systems of linear
equations.

The TSM is patterned after the popular game Tic-Tac-Toe
in which vertical, horizontal and diagonal patterns are followed with
systems of linear equations as the core of the game.
TARGET AUDIENCE

Second Year Math Students

SUBJECT MATTER/LEARNING COMPETENCIES

SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS

4.1 -

Given a number of linear equations in

two variables, identify those whose graphs
are parallel, those that intersect, and those
that coincide(inconsistent).

4.3 -

Given a system of linear equations in two

variables, determine whether or not their
graphs intersect, and if they do, find the

solution of the system algebraically by:

>
>

elimination
substitution

DURATION

30 minutes for game 1

30 minutes for game 2

OBJECTIVES

Students will:

1.

identify the kinds of systems of linear equations

2.

solve systems of linear equations.

PREPARATION

1. Students should have knowledge about:

>
the kinds of systems of linear equations

>
solving systems of linear equations using

-
elimination

-
substitution

2. Prepare TIC-TAC-TOE board, three sets of square

cartolina whose size of each is the same as the

size of the square in TIC-TAC-TOE board and

systems of equations strips.

Note: Master copies are provided to be used in

reproducing the number required for each set.

1.

Pick out all A-1 students in the class. The number of

these students will determine on the number of
groups formed. Each A-1 student will be assigned to
each group as an arbiter in which he/she is responsible
in checking the answers of the competing groups and
decide who the winner is for that particular round.

PROCEDURES FOR USE

2.

Divide the class into groups with 6 members.

3.

Within the small group of 6, each member will

choose a partner to form another subgroups with
2 members.

4.

Each subgroup will then choose a color, (BLUE,

PINK or YELLOW) and will get the square cartolina
from their teacher according to their chosen
color.

5.

To determine the first group to control the first

item to be answered, a die is thrown and
whoever subgroup gets the highest number in a
die will be the first controller.

6.

The first controller will then choose a number in

the TIC-TAC-TOE board and will draw a card
from a deck of equation cards for the 3
subgroups to answer.

7.

The first group to give the correct answer to the

arbiter will be the winner for that particular
round and will stick their square card to the
chosen number in the TIC-TAC-TOE board. That
group now will choose another number in the
board as the new controller.

The game continues on the same manner.

8.

9.

The subgroup who can form a diagonal or

horizontal or vertical pattern first of the same
color will be the winner.

10. If no group was able to form a diagonal,

horizontal or vertical, the group with the

most numbers of square cartolinas wins.

11. In case of a tie, another round will be played

until one subgroup in a group wins.

11. Game 1 is focused in identifying the systems of

linear equations.

12. Game 2 is focused in solving systems of linear

equations.
EVALUATION

The effectiveness of this material can be measured
through students speed and accuracy in the computation and
correct identification of systems of linear equations.
