GENERAL ORAL HEALTH

Full Emotional Impact of Tooth Loss Revealed
Health Canal December 5
A new study (Sociology of Health and Illness) found that participants were devastated by their tooth loss,
which some compared to losing an arm or leg. According to the authors, We know that many chronic
conditions have significant impacts on peoples lives, but tooth loss is rarely thought of in the same way, and it
is surprising how little research has been done in this area.
Oral Health of Children on the Rise in Terms of Preventive Care in US
daily Rx December 5
According to a new study (Preventing Chronic Disease), preventive dentist visits increased and reported oral
health improved in US children when data from 2003 was compared to data from 2011 and 2012. Although
significant improvements were seen among children in almost all categories of health insurance and
household income, the authors note that oral health status of children without health insurance did not
improve over time.
Experts: Oil Pulling Results in Better Dental Health, Has Additional Health Benefits
The Indy Channel November 21
The practice of oil pulling involves swishing specific types of oil for 20 minutes a day before spitting to pull
bacteria out of the body. According to an Indianapolis dentist, oil pulling combats many problems that start in
the mouth and is another defense to improve systemic health. However, experts note that oil pulling is not a
replacement for the normal routine of brushing and flossing and that anyone considering oil pulling should
consult with a doctor first.
Study Identifies Mechanism That Makes Ordinary Stem Cells Create Tumors
USC Ostrow School of Dentistry November 7
A new study (Cell Stem Cell) illustrates how changes in cell signaling can cause ordinary stem cells in the jaw to
start forming benign but potentially harmful tumors. The only treatment option for these tumors is surgery,
which leads to major loss of vital tissues and compromises quality of life. Researchers hope that the findings
will shed light on a way to stop harmful tumor growth before surgery is needed.
Most Americans Unaware That ACA Includes Childrens Dental Services
Orthodontic News November 6
A new survey (Childrens Dental Health Project) reveals that 42% of Americans understand that childrens dental
benefits were included in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), but only 22% correctly identify dental services for

children up to age 19 as one of the 10 essential health benefits. In addition, approximately 4 out of 10
respondents report delaying a dental visit over the past 12 months because of expected out-of-pocket costs. An
Infographic of the results is also available.
Oral Bacteria Create a 'Fingerprint' in Your Mouth
ScienceDaily October 23
According to new research (PLOS ONE), bacteria in the human mouth are as powerful as a fingerprint at
identifying a person's ethnicity. Scientists identified approximately 400 different species of microbes in the
mouths of non-Hispanic black, white, Chinese, and Latino study participants. Researchers found that each
ethnic group in the study was represented by a signature of shared microbial communities, which could help
explain why some ethnic groups are more susceptible than others to developing gum disease. It also indicates
that one type of dental treatment may not be appropriate for everyone.

DIET & NUTRITION

Sweet Treats That Claim to Prevent Tooth Decay
ABC News December 17
According to a new study, (Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins), a dead version of lactobacillus paracasei can
be adhered to the surface of sugary sucking candies to help capture and neutralize streptococcus mutans.
Tests found low levels of streptococcus after eating the candy, which could potentially lead to fewer cavities
for candy lovers. Some dentists are skeptical, however, noting that the only chemical known to conclusively
prevent cavities is fluoride. There is no word yet on when the candy will be available in the United States.
Kids' Movies Deliver Mixed Messages on Eating, Obesity
HealthDay December 12
A new study (Obesity) examined clips from animated and live-action movies for their depictions of eating,
physical activity, and obesity and finds that many popular children's movies promote unhealthy behaviors.
Among the movie segments that included eating, 26% featured exaggerated portion sizes, 51% included
unhealthy snacks, and 19% included sugar-sweetened beverages. In the movies analyzed, unhealthy movie
segments outnumbered healthy ones two to one.
Recommended Sugar Intake Should Be Halved to Fewer Than Seven Teaspoons a Day
Mail Online, UK December 9
A new analysis (Journal of Dental Research) has determined that people who gained less than 5% of their
energy from free sugars added artificially to foods and found naturally in juice, honey, and syrup, were more
likely to avoid cavities. Researchers warn that differences in the data quality of the studies analyzed could
render the results unreliable; however, they believe that the findings are relevant to minimizing caries risk
throughout the life course.
Junk Food, Poor Oral Health Increase Risk of Premature Heart Disease
ScienceDaily December 2
The association between poor oral health and increased risk of cardiovascular disease should make the
reduction of sugars in junk food and soft drinks an important target for UK health policy, experts state (Journal
of the Royal Society of Medicine). Despite convincing evidence linking poor oral health to premature heart
disease, however, the most recent UK national guidance on the prevention of cardiovascular disease only
indirectly mentions the reduction of sugar. According to the authors, it is important that the UK population be
encouraged to limit soft drink intake and reduce sugar consumption to improve oral hygiene. Reducing sugar
consumption and managing dental problems early could help prevent heart problems later in life, they note.

Teenage Athletes Found to Have Better Eating and Oral Hygiene Habits Than Non-Athletes
daily R/x November 30
A recent study (International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry) found that student athletes have overall better diet
and oral health behaviors than non-athletes and that girls showed overall better health habits than boys in
both the athlete and non-athlete groups. Along with determining that the athletes drank soft drinks more
often at school than the control group, researchers found that 95% of all the athletes and 97% of the control
group brushed their teeth and used fluoride toothpaste every day. However, the boys in both groups brushed
their teeth significantly less often than the girls. Researchers suggest that healthy eating and oral habits be
emphasized to teenagers, especially boys.
Even Californias Pre-School Age Kids Eating Fast Food Regularly
The California Report November 25
In California, two-thirds of children between the ages of 2 and 5 eat fast food at least once a week, a new
study finds (UCLA Center for Health Policy Research). The study also evaluated soda intake, noting that
consumption for this age group dropped drastically in the past few years. The authors attribute this to the
2003 California law that banned sodas in schools.
Schools Can Set Tone for Healthy Eating
HealthDay November 14
Offering students healthier food choices at school helps improve their eating habits, according to a new study
(Childhood Obesity). The findings suggest that new federal nutrition standards for schools that are scheduled
to take effect during the 2014/2015 school year may help improve students' eating habits. The US Department
of Agriculture standards will set limits on calories, salt, sugar, and fat in foods and beverages, and promote
snack foods with more whole grains, low-fat dairy, fruits, and vegetables. Creating school environments
where the healthy choice is the easy choice allows students to practice lessons learned in the classroom and
form healthy habits at an early age, laying a foundation for a healthy future, the study authors note.
EARLY CHILDHOOD CARIES/TOOTH DECAY
Concerns Over Preventative Treatment for Scottish Children
Cosmetic Dentistry, UK October 22
Recent figures reveal that NHS health boards are falling short of their target to provide preventive dental
treatment in an effort to improve standards of oral health among children. The guidelines for the Childsmile
program state that at least 60% of 3- and 4-year-olds in Scotland should receive at least 2 fluoride varnish
treatments; however, figures show that in Glasgow the uptake rate is between 35% and 40% in deprived areas,
with just 8% of children receiving treatment in the most affluent areas. According to a spokeswoman for the
board, it is well-documented that the risk of oral health problems is higher is areas of deprivation, and the
program is targeting children in these communities. In addition, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Glasgow has urged authorities to consider adding fluoride to the citys water supplies in a bid to reduce decay.
HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
GPs 'Under Pressure' Over Oral Health Advice
Boots WebMD November 18
According to new figures from the Association of Dental Groups, General Practitioners (GPs) in the UK feel
increased pressure from patients who are turning to them for advice about oral health rather than visiting a
dentist. The poll also revealed that the majority of GPs think more should be done to encourage patients to go
to their dentist for mouth-related health issues.

Pediatricians' Community Involvement Has Declined

Medscape Medical News November 18
According to a new analysis (Pediatrics), pediatricians' involvement in community child health activities has
declined. Factors linked with participation included older age of the pediatrician; not having children 5 years of
age and younger; practicing in rural settings; practice type; training; and feeling that they are moderately or very
responsible for child health. In an accompanying editorial, Judith S. Palfrey, MD, FAAP, explains that the primary
issue is not motivation or education, but whether the pediatric field has a strategy to integrate child health
activities into the changing health care system.
Pediatrician Numbers Outpace Family Physicians
Medscape October 23
The growth in general pediatrics has far outpaced the growth in family medicine and general internal
medicine, a recent policy brief finds (American Family Physician). The smallest growth has been among family
physicians, which is the medical specialty most likely to practice in underserved areas. The authors stress that
simply increasing the number of residency training positions does not solve patient access issues and that
efforts to build the physician workforce should focus on the needs of the underserved.
PARENTS
ODA Urges Parents to Give the Gift of Oral Health
Digital Journal December 11
Given the impact oral health issues like tooth decay can have on a child's health, the Ontario Dental
Association (ODA) considers oral health-related presents to be the perfect gift for the holidays. Suggestions
include soft-bristled or electric toothbrushes designed for kids; sugar-free gum with xylitol; dental floss; and
print-outs from the ODA Web site as part of a gift pack. According to the ODA, Incorporating the gift of oral
health into your holiday celebrations sets a positive example in (a childs) early years and will help lead to a
lifetime of good oral health. The ODA also recommends offering chewy candies or dried fruit, hard candies,
hard nuts, and soda and juices in moderation, or not at all, if possible.
PUBLIC HEALTH & POLICY
Developing Countries Told 'Tax Tobacco to Save Lives'
BBC News December 2
According to a new report (The Lancet), poorer countries should consider adopting or increasing tobacco taxes
to save lives. The authors recommend increased investment in global health to tackle killer diseases and
suggest that sugar also be taxed. The report points to the success of the 4CsChina, Chile, Cuba, and Costa
Ricain reducing health infections despite starting from low income levels in the 1980s.

2012 Statistics on Fluoridated Drinking Water

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released the latest statistics on community water
fluoridation for the United States. According to this data, 74.6% of the US population on community water
systems (210.7 million people) had access to optimally fluoridated water in 2012. This is significant progress

from the Healthy People 2020 baseline of 72.4% (2008) towards the target of 79.6%. Since 2008, an additional
15 million people have received the benefit of fluoridated water.
New AAP Resources on Navigating Breastfeeding Provisions of the ACA
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides 2 major benefits to encourage mothers to achieve their breastfeeding
goals: (1) reasonable break time to express milk and (2) health insurance benefits to defray the costs
associated with providing breastmilk to infants. In an effort to support pediatricians in the implementation of
the breastfeeding coverage, the AAP has developed new resources on coverage and payment for lactation
support and breast pumps. For more information, visit the AAP Section on Breastfeeding Web site.
IMPACT on Health & Wellness Web Site
IMPACT is a project of National Family Voices, and this Web site was developed to
help families find health and wellness information that they can trust, understand,
and use in their daily lives. The Web site is organized by AAP Bright Futures Health
Promotion themes, including oral health, and includes resources and links to trusted organizations and agencies. It
is intended to serve as a valuable resource for parents, educators, health care providers, and anyone interested in
promoting health and wellness for individuals, families, and the community.
New ADA Research Briefs
New policy briefs on dental care utilization are now available from the ADA Health Policy Resources Center. Dental
Care Use Among Children Varies Widely Across States and Between Medicaid and Commercial Plans Within a State
finds that pediatric dental care utilization is higher among states with commercial dental benefits than states with
Medicaid. Dental Benefits Continue to Expand for Children, Remain Stable for Working-Age Adults notes that more
children had dental benefits in 2011 than in 2010, with continued expansion since 2000 primarily due to Medicaid
and SCHIP. Dental Care Utilization Continues to Decline Among Working-Age Adults, Increases Among the Elderly,
Stable Among Children suggests that the private dental insurance sector and state Medicaid and CHIP programs
have been effective in making dental care accessible to all children, and Financial Barriers to Dental Care Declining
after a Decade of Steady Increase determines that the provision of dental insurance and improvement of dental
benefits are both means of reducing financial barriers to care for children and non-elderly adults.
New Resources From OHRC
The National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center (OHRC) at Georgetown University has developed
several new resources. Oral Health and Learning: When Children's Oral Health Suffers, So Does Their Ability to Learn
