Event at the Samaritan Clinic in Danbury. At this event, PAs provided oral
health screenings and applied fluoride varnish to 60 children. A second event
was held on November 15, 2013, and a total of 75 children were seen.

children up to age 19 as one of the 10 essential health benefits. In addition, approximately 4 out of 10
respondents report delaying a dental visit over the past 12 months because of expected out-of-pocket costs. An

Oral Bacteria Create a 'Fingerprint' in Your Mouth
ScienceDaily October 23
According to new research (PLOS ONE), bacteria in the human mouth are as powerful as a fingerprint at
identifying a person's ethnicity. Scientists identified approximately 400 different species of microbes in the
mouths of non-Hispanic black, white, Chinese, and Latino study participants. Researchers found that each
ethnic group in the study was represented by a signature of shared microbial communities, which could help
explain why some ethnic groups are more susceptible than others to developing gum disease. It also indicates
that one type of dental treatment may not be appropriate for everyone.

Teenage Athletes Found to Have Better Eating and Oral Hygiene Habits Than Non-Athletes
daily R/x November 30
A recent study (International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry) found that student athletes have overall better diet
and oral health behaviors than non-athletes and that girls showed overall better health habits than boys in
both the athlete and non-athlete groups. Along with determining that the athletes drank soft drinks more
often at school than the control group, researchers found that 95% of all the athletes and 97% of the control
group brushed their teeth and used fluoride toothpaste every day. However, the boys in both groups brushed
their teeth significantly less often than the girls. Researchers suggest that healthy eating and oral habits be
emphasized to teenagers, especially boys.
Even Californias Pre-School Age Kids Eating Fast Food Regularly
The California Report November 25
In California, two-thirds of children between the ages of 2 and 5 eat fast food at least once a week, a new
study finds (UCLA Center for Health Policy Research). The study also evaluated soda intake, noting that
consumption for this age group dropped drastically in the past few years. The authors attribute this to the
2003 California law that banned sodas in schools.
Schools Can Set Tone for Healthy Eating
HealthDay November 14
Offering students healthier food choices at school helps improve their eating habits, according to a new study
(Childhood Obesity). The findings suggest that new federal nutrition standards for schools that are scheduled
to take effect during the 2014/2015 school year may help improve students' eating habits. The US Department
of Agriculture standards will set limits on calories, salt, sugar, and fat in foods and beverages, and promote
snack foods with more whole grains, low-fat dairy, fruits, and vegetables. Creating school environments
where the healthy choice is the easy choice allows students to practice lessons learned in the classroom and
form healthy habits at an early age, laying a foundation for a healthy future, the study authors note.
EARLY CHILDHOOD CARIES/TOOTH DECAY
Concerns Over Preventative Treatment for Scottish Children
Cosmetic Dentistry, UK October 22
Recent figures reveal that NHS health boards are falling short of their target to provide preventive dental
treatment in an effort to improve standards of oral health among children. The guidelines for the Childsmile
program state that at least 60% of 3- and 4-year-olds in Scotland should receive at least 2 fluoride varnish
treatments; however, figures show that in Glasgow the uptake rate is between 35% and 40% in deprived areas,
with just 8% of children receiving treatment in the most affluent areas. According to a spokeswoman for the
board, it is well-documented that the risk of oral health problems is higher is areas of deprivation, and the
program is targeting children in these communities. In addition, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Glasgow has urged authorities to consider adding fluoride to the citys water supplies in a bid to reduce decay.

GPs 'Under Pressure' Over Oral Health Advice
Boots WebMD November 18
According to new figures from the Association of Dental Groups, General Practitioners (GPs) in the UK feel
increased pressure from patients who are turning to them for advice about oral health rather than visiting a
dentist. The poll also revealed that the majority of GPs think more should be done to encourage patients to go
to their dentist for mouth-related health issues.

New AAP Resources on Navigating Breastfeeding Provisions of the ACA
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) provides 2 major benefits to encourage mothers to achieve their breastfeeding
goals: (1) reasonable break time to express milk and (2) health insurance benefits to defray the costs
associated with providing breastmilk to infants. In an effort to support pediatricians in the implementation of
the breastfeeding coverage, the AAP has developed new resources on coverage and payment for lactation
support and breast pumps. For more information, visit the AAP Section on Breastfeeding Web site.

New ADA Research Briefs
New policy briefs on dental care utilization are now available from the ADA Health Policy Resources Center. Dental
Care Use Among Children Varies Widely Across States and Between Medicaid and Commercial Plans Within a State
finds that pediatric dental care utilization is higher among states with commercial dental benefits than states with
Medicaid. Dental Benefits Continue to Expand for Children, Remain Stable for Working-Age Adults notes that more
children had dental benefits in 2011 than in 2010, with continued expansion since 2000 primarily due to Medicaid
and SCHIP. Dental Care Utilization Continues to Decline Among Working-Age Adults, Increases Among the Elderly,
Stable Among Children suggests that the private dental insurance sector and state Medicaid and CHIP programs
have been effective in making dental care accessible to all children, and Financial Barriers to Dental Care Declining
after a Decade of Steady Increase determines that the provision of dental insurance and improvement of dental
benefits are both means of reducing financial barriers to care for children and non-elderly adults.
New Resources From OHRC
