Factors that can affect Self-concept

present in the movie:

Characters:

Bruce Willis as Russ

Duritz

Appearance
Relationships with
other people
Life experiences

at age 70

Spencer Breslin

as Rusty
Duritz
Situation/sight
of each factor:
1. Appearance

Emily Mortimer as

Amy

A persons appearance is based

on your thoughts and feelings
about the way your body looks.
Lily Tomlin as
Janet
Sometimes the way you think other
people
are
judging
your
appearance can affect your body
image. Poor body image comes
from
negative
and
that are positive. Body image is a major factor in self-esteem;
which is thethoughts
way you think
feelings about your appearance,
and feel about yourself as a person.
As seen on the movie:
I therefore conclude that Appearance can somehow affect a persons self-concept.
Rusty was a kid that is chubby so he himself thought that he can be easily beaten up by
his classmates since he has no friends at all and he cant fight back. He was drowning
himself on the thought that he is a loser and he cant fight back because of his body
image/appearance.

3. Poor attention
Giving attention to someone who is in need will definitely help him/her to get
through from what he/she is experiencing.
As seen on the movie:
Rusty being a kid wasnt given attention that way he wishes. He wasnt given
attention when he was in need of it, when he needed a parent. In return, he didnt know
and he wasnt aware of what he is going to do next. He turned mentally lost.

Situations that the male leading character is on his way to empowerment:

The moment when he realized that he missed so much a part of his life. He realized
that hes capable of doing more and not just settling for what happens next. When Rusty
the kid gave him so much to remember and he was given a chance to correct all of the
things he should have done. As these two work out their purpose and discover a way to get
the kid back in his own time frame, Russ reflects on what a loser he had been as a kid.
After the mission they accomplished, Russ was able to see things the way he didnt see for
the past years. His eyes opened that life must be worth it, so better do what you want and
give importance to people no matter hard it would be.
The moral lesson of this story is that one needs to be true to the being one was
created to be and not let looks or physical features get in the way

Characters:
Bruce Willis as Russ Duritz
Russ Duritz works as an image consultant, but he
is impolite to people and has a strained
relationship with his father. He's a successful
image consultant, makes a lot of money, and has
an expensive home and a fancy car. But, he's a
loser when it comes to the things that count in life
- a family, friends, and people who care. Russ is at
an emotional crossroads and, though he doesn't realize it, needs help.

Spencer Breslin as Young Russ/Rusty

Lovable and direct, and seems to know what's going
on in a way old Russ doesn't. Together, the boy and
the man share memories and revisit the scenes of
childhood defeats, and the adult begins to understand
why he is so cold to his father, to the world and to
himself.

Emily Mortimer as Amy

A stadium manager who is reneging on a previous
promise to fund a baseball camp for disadvantaged
children.

Lily Tomlin as Janet

Assistant of Russ that he tyrannizes, who
survives only because of a tough, humorous
shell.

Characters:
2. Relationships with other people
Relationships with other people indeed affect a persons self-concept. What we
became is all because of the people we have been with. If we were raised nice, we turn out
to be a good person. But if we were raised with cruelty, then we turn out to be same.
As seen on the movie:
Relationships with other people can be messy, it somehow will define who were
gonna be one day. Russ, a man who turned out to be successful person was not really that
kind. He is a snob, insensitive and ungrateful person. The reason behind that was because
of his father, they were really not that close since he was a child and his father is always
angry at him because he thinks that russ was nothing but a stress. Russ then didnt give
importance to his father in times of occasion/important events because he turned out to be
bitter.
3. Life experiences
Life experiences truly molds us in this world we live in. It can improve us, or even
worsen us. We learned from the past, which meant from the experience we had.
As seen on the movie:
Life experience has a big impact on our lives. We are aware because we learned
from the experience thats why we know how to apply it on the next situation. Russ
became insensitive of others because what he had experienced when he was a child was
hurtful, and all of those emotions were kept inside of him that it came to the point he
became heartless. But still, at the end of the movie he was able to correct the things he did
Barriers of Self-concept:
-

Ignorance
Failure
Poor attention

Situation/sight of each barrier:

1. Ignorance
Self-concept is essentially impossible if one is not
willing to devote the time to understanding the
nature of the mind.

As seen on the movie:

Rusty being a kid is ignorant of different things. He wasnt ware why his dad is
always mad at him, hes not aware of fighting back and how to defend himself from others.
He wasnt aware why people always hurt him, in return wasnt able to develop being a
better person.
2. Failure
Failure to be something what people wants you to be hurts so bad.
As see on on the movie:
Rusty being a kid looked like a failure in his fathers eyes because all he did was to give his
mom nothing but stress yet he feels sorry for it because he didnt want it that way to
happen. In return, he felt hurt, thinks that hes a total jerk.
