Graphical representation of a function

The following diagram shows the mapping between

the elements of two sets A and B.
B

The mapping between the element, x, in the domain of

a function f and its image, f (x ) , in the range can be
represented graphically by the graph of y f (x ) .
1
For example, the function f : x 1 x , x 1 can

be represented by the graph of y

Definition of a function:
The mapping between the elements of set A and the
elements of set B is a function, if to every element of A
corresponds one and only one element of B.
Remark: Not all mappings are functions.

Domain, codomain and range of a function

Remark: A vertical line x = h intersects the graph of a

function at no more than one point.
y

Elements of set A are called arguments (or objects)

and set A is the domain of the function.
Set B is the codomain of the function.
If x A , then the element in B corresponding to x is
called the image of x and the set of all the images is the
range of the function.
If f is a function, we use the notation:
f : x f ( x ) , where x A, and f ( x ) B .
The domain of f is the set of values of x for which the
function is defined.
The range of f is the set of values that f (x ) can take
for all x in the domain.
Remark: f is used to name a function whereas f (x )
is the image of x under the mapping of f.
For example,

1
the domain of the function f : x 1 x is the set of

all real numbers, for which

1

is defined. That is,

x : x R, x 1 .The range of f is the set of all real

One-to-one and onto functions

A function f is one-to-one if and only if for all x1 and

in the domain of f,

x1 x 2

implies that

f ( x1 ) f ( x 2 ) .
Alternatively, a function f is one-to-one if and only if
for all x1 and x 2 in the domain of f, f ( x1 ) f ( x 2 )
implies that x1 x 2 .

The modulus function is given by y f ( x) where

What is the domain of h?
First of all, the domain of g is the set of real numbers,
and the range of g is also the set of real numbers. But
f is defined only for the set of non-negative real
numbers.
Therefore, f is defined only for g ( x ) 0 or x 2 ,

Now, the domain of f is the set of non-negative real

domain of h is x : x 0 .
