As word that immigration authorities have been intensifying enforcement efforts in New Jersey ripples
across the state, federal officials say it has been business as usual and no raids are taking place in the Garden State.
The assurances from federal officials have done
little to quell fears in immigrant communities after at
least two young men were detained following reported searches in homes in Freehold and New Brunswick
last week. Both families said immigration officials entered their homes without permission.
It sounds like they are ramping up enforcement,
said Chia-Chia Wang, an organizer with American
Friends Service Committee, an immigrant advocacy
group. We believe that these are regular, ongoing
raids.
Alvin Phillips, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration
and Customs Enforcement, was emphatic that agents
were not participating in any raids; he characterized
the ICE activity as regular enforcement actions
against specific persons, rather than random roundups of undocumented immigrants.
Were not doing anything that we were not doing in
December, said Phillips. Weve done absolutely
nothing differently. We must enforce the law. Our borders are not open to illegal immigration, if you come

high speeds for 11 miles on the wrong side of the Garden State Parkway ended without injury early
Wednesday morning.
The drama started, the State Police said, when
troopers spotted a 1999 Ford pickup truck heading
north on the Parkway in the southbound lanes.
The pickup truck eventually ended up on the right
side of the highway and miraculously didnt crash
into anything but only after the driver had eluded
police in the high-speed, 40-minute chase across
Ocean and Monmouth counties, New Jersey State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Flynn said.
William Errico, 36, of Penndel, Pennsylvania, is accused of zigzagging through local and state roads before returning to the Parkway, where he was stranded
as troopers closed in. He was arrested on charges he
eluded troopers, as well as police from Toms River,
Lakewood, Seaside Park and Wall, before his capture

Errico also was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of a controlled dangerous substance
