BRASS MONKEYS 2016

Dear Members, two months of my

captaincy has gone already, they say
time flies when your having fun!!!
Unfortunately I had to cancel the
Captains Drive-In but this will be rearranged as soon as possible.
I was honoured to be invited to the
Ladies Xmas tea, many thanks to
Sandra our Lady Captain and all the
Ladies Section for a great day.
I have entered the Club into the
Daily Mail Foursomes and Team
Competition. In the team comp we
have been drawn at home to Cowes,
which will be played before the 14th
February.
I am looking for players for this
competition along with the County
Sevens and the A & B inter club
leagues, please see the forms in the
competition room.
I have started a NGC Fund and set
myself a target of 5000. This fund
will be spent on the course for you the
members.
If you would like the chance to win
cash prizes then you may want to be
part of the 100 club!!, details on the
notice boards.
Finally I held my first new members
meeting, we have three new 7 day
men and two junior girls!!! this is
great news for this time of year.
Happy golfing to all!!
Terry

The first trophy of the year has

been won by Keith Fryer and
Andy Wheeler, pictured with club
Captain Terry Phillips.

Nearest rivals, on 69 points, were

Rex Ringer and John Lee. In third,
on 68, were Shaun Ford and Dave
Stockbridge.

The Brass Monkeys is played as a

Stableford with aggregate scores
counting.

Congratulations to Keith and

Andy, as well as the other 18 pairs
that saw the match through in the
worsening conditions.

On a cold day, with the course very

wet underfoot, the pair triumphed
with a tremendous score of 78
points.

RAIN RAIN
GO AWAY !!
The story of the winter so far has
been rain, rain, rain.
It is such a shame that the course
has been closed, but all clubs on the
Island have been suffering the same,
with the horrific weather and lots of
course closures.
Dave and Ben have been working
hard clearing ditches and making
sure all the land drains are working

the best they possibly can.

Lets hope sunshine is on its way, and
we dont see any snow!!
Please be assured, the staff are
doing everything they can to get the
course drained and back to being
playable. Sunshine is on its way!!!

BALL IN BUNKER - IT GETS WORSE!!

Just so everyone is refreshed with the rules of bunker
play I have provided the rules as shown in the
diagram, but its got worse!!
The bunker on the 3rd / 12th hole, in front of the
green, is now the Captains Charity Bunker. Any ball
entering will cost the player 1. Please make sure
you pay the fine in the bottle on the bar.
All proceeds will go to the Captains Charities.
Thank you for your generous support - Terry.

FIX YOUR GAME ON THE RANGE

AVOID SLICING THE BALL

PROBLEM The ball starts to the left of the

target line and then curves right
to finish to the right of the target.
Check this list of possibilities to
see where you are going wrong:

When you stop to think

about it, did you ever
notice that its a lot
easier to get up at
6:00am to play golf
than at 10:00am to
mow the lawn?

Clubface open
Aim: Your clubface could be too
open.

swing path. (See above).

Grip: Your hands may be twisted

too far round to the left of the
grip, known as a weak grip. As you
swing through the ball the blade is
naturally opening.

Posture: You may be standing too

far from the ball.
Ball too far forward in stance

Ball position: The ball could be too

far forward in your stance causing
your shoulders to open.
Stance: Your stance may be too
narrow causing you to be unstable
and rely too much on your arms
through the forward swing rather
than your hips.
Body alignment: Your feet, hips and
shoulders are probably aiming too
far left of the target causing you to
swing your club on an out to in

Ball too far forward in stance

Swing: In the first part of the
backswing the club goes too much
to the inside. The left arm goes too
much across the chest. The arms
have got nowhere to go so they lift
and go over the top, like a figure of
eight almost. (See above).
Golf coach tip: Hit shots from a side
hill lie with the ball above your feet.
This will get you swinging along the
correct target line rather than in, up
and over.

RANGE TIME
Do take the opportunity during this poor weather
to keep your swing in good shape. Buckets of balls
are available at the bar. A chance to work on new
ideas or improve on that shot your finding difficult.

If you have always fancied helping

out at the club we would love to here
from you.
Cutting grass, weeding, strimming,
painting fences or even wanting to
look after a tee box for the year.
The club is very grateful and already
benefits from people doing jobs and
helping out, but we always need
more.
Please have a chat with Dean or Terry
if you think you can help out.
PS - The Gents Section Committee
has a vacancy for a Secretary. Job
involves taking minutes and being an
active member of the Committee.
Please contact Terry if your interested

RODNEYS RULES
Rodney removes an out of bounds post on his line of play. He realises
he has made a mistake and replaces it before playing his next stroke.
What is the ruling?
(a) As the post was replaced before the next stroke was played there is
no penalty.

I have been in the process of tidying

up the club entrance.

(b) The player was in breach of Rule 13-2 the moment he removed
the post and there was nothing he could do to avoid the penalty of
2 strokes. The replacement of the post before the next stroke was
irrelevant.
(c) The player restored
the post to its original
position and therefore
gained no advantage
with respect to his
next stroke. In
equity (Rule 14) the penalty
of 2 strokes
under Rule 13-2 is
reduced to a 1 stroke
penalty.

I hope you like the difference the

new LED lighting system in / under
the trophy cabinets have made,
its great to see them working and
brightening up the hallway.
We are now updating the trophy
winners boards to complete
the display.
The plan is to also to power
wash the entrance patio outside,
change the door mat, add a sign to
direct visitors, giving a welcoming
entrance.
I am starting to redecorate parts of
the club house from mid January, this
should also add to the clubs look and
feel.
All part of making the experience of
Newport Golf Club more welcoming.

ISLE OF WIGHT
GOLF ALLIANCE

to bring them up to an appropriate

standard.

IWGA is an inclusive club, dedicated

to the promotion of competitive and
friendly golf from all clubs on the
Island.

Albeit frustrating, we are not in the

same situation as those people
affected most by the deluge, not
only have their golf courses been 6
feet under water, but their homes
and livelihoods have been severely
affected. As we enter a new year it
is important to spare a thought for
those less fortunate than us.

I would like to wish all you and your

very proud to be your President,
and looking forward to moving
Newport Golf Club forward in an
ever changing and more challenging
landscape.

to stop. I know that many of you are
frustrated with not being able to
get onto the course. The green staff
are doing all that they can on the
course to make it available for play
