The hibiscus is a native of Asia and the Pacific Islands. Nevertheless, it is now grown
all over the world and there are about 200 species. Hibiscus bloom in colours of red,
pink, orange, yellow and white. There are many varieties of the hibiscus, each variety
has its own distinctive flower. Hibiscus are usually grown for their showy flowers. They
add colours to any garden or any place. They are also grown as landscape shrubs. They
attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds, too.
Dried hibiscus is edible. Many people use the hibiscus to make candies or as a garnish
in dishes. Certain species of the hibiscus are also used widely as a natural source of
food colouring. Other than these uses, the hibiscus has many health benefits. The
hibiscus contains vitamin C and minerals. It is used traditionally as a mild medicine.
Dieters or people with kidney problems often take the hibiscus tea without adding sugar
for its beneficial properties. Some people say that hibiscus tea lowers blood pressure. In
India, the roots of the hibiscus are used to cure ailments such as cough, hair loss or hair
greying.
