Polish design: the secrets of success

Thousands upon millions of objects are produced worldwide every day. Only a few of them
become icons of design. Only a few of these are desired by people all over the world,
regardless of their culture. What makes these products so successful? What makes us desire
them? The “Added value” exhibition is the answer to these questions showing the phenomenon
of the modern designer’s collaboration with industry.
A designer must be aware of the changing world and the needs of ordinary people.
S/he must be able to use this knowledge in his/her work. Functional, ergonomic, aesthetic,
intelligently designed products should be accessible to the widest possible audience.
They should also be beautiful. This is the key to the success in the modern world.

Moreover, the “Added value” exhibition demonstrates the phenomenon of Polish design.
For over 100 years, Polish designers in cooperation with engineers, scientists and
manufacturers, have created beautiful designs for even the most common and ordinary objects.
Designing is the art of creating objects which makes our lives easier and more pleasant,
however, designing is also a major business process which should be learnt. The strengths
of Polish design are teamwork and humility towards the needs of customers. Poland
is a country of creative designers who understand the modern world and its challenges,
a country where the objects are created with passion, knowledge and talent. The “Added value”
exhibition shows that we create “beauty for the everyday and for everyone”.
This is the secret of our success.

Enjoy the exhibition!

Tribal: beautiful and intimate

The reference to native, local designs is today one of the most interesting trends
in global design.
It is folklore and handicraft products which, in the all-embracing global mass production,
are becoming an added value on the international, non-local market. Polish industrial
design has always successfully reached for patterns and models rooted in the traditions.
Especially promoted by professor Wanda Telakowska, it was the main tool of the new
aesthetics in the 1950’s. Today, it is regenerating in a new form. The skill to juggle traditional
materials and the latest production techniques results in products sought for by customers
from the farthest corners of the earth.

The potential of industry:

beautiful and accessible
Poland is a large country in the centre of Europe in which industry has a meaningful part

in the creation national income. The existence of industry was and is of great value for design.

It directly influences the development of project ideas, offers enormous possibilities of production

and resources. Not only in the sphere of gaining experience, but in the sphere of real orders

for designers. The stronger industry will be in Poland, the better managed and equipped it will be,

the easier it will be to realize good projects, which will be competitive on the difficult global market.

Aesthetics: just beautiful

Most Polish designers were and are educated as artists, in academies of art.
Nonetheless, it is difficult to talk about particular Polish aesthetics. No Polish brand
or Polish designer has succeeded so far to exist on the world exchange of icons.
This we are now changing. At the exhibition we show objects which could have been
created anywhere, but which were created in Poland. They are at the same time objects
of art and industrial products. Beauty can be an economic value.

Engineering: beautiful and technical

Together with the triumph of the industrial revolution, products stopped being produced
by craftsmen, and started to be designed by engineers and constructors. This was no Polish
phenomenon. Nevertheless, our interest in this area still remains, and technological thoughts
were always connected with rational thinking and inventiveness. To make use of innovative
ideas and inventions, these “demand” product solutions that will bring them to life them.
The existence of this type of intellectual environment provides incredible possibilities
for the development of new products needed for the escalating task for designers today.

Digital technologies:
beautiful and hi-tech
We have excellent traditions. From the railway track constructed by Ernest Malinowski
in the Andes, via Polish mathematic schools or breaking the Enigma code,
to the forerunner of the laptop developed by Jacek Karpiński in the early ‘70s.
We have excellent Polish ready-made products. At the exhibition we present, on the one
hand, how designers use digital technology for designing functional solutions and,
on the other, how they move around in this technology. We also boast spectacular
international successes of IT adepts. Could this area slowly be developing into a Polish
domain? Yet another large area entered by Polish design.

Universal design:
beautiful and for everyone
To a certain extent, we are all at different levels of physical ability. People who have broken
their arm or leg, pregnant women, families with prams and pushchairs, children, people
of advanced years, the obese… Thinking about the needs of various people,
with all the differences there are between them, is one of the most characteristic features
of Polish design. However, this is not always reflected in the production. After all, we have
excellent potential, and the needs to implement good projects are certainly many.

体工程学(或有关工作的科学)概述》(An outline of ergonomics, or the science of work)中使用该术语,

Ergonomics: beautiful and comfortable

Thinking about ergonomics as a science originated in Poland. Professor Wojciech
Jastrzębowski was the first to use this term in 1857, in his work entitled “An outline
of ergonomics, or the science of work”. After the Second World War, ergonomics
rather stayed in the form of an idea and at the stage of prototypes. Today designers
as well as many Polish manufacturers treat it seriously, because it is difficult
to produce, without research, such products as office furniture, specialist clothing
or workstations and the operation of devices. In addition, designers acknowledge it as
indispensable in designing. Right now, we are introducing ergonomic data into
design programs in Poland. The development of applied ergonomics is awaiting us.
