Th1, t he 50K t hermist or, is a st andard

t ype. Mine was a bar or rect angular
looking
t hingy.
Available
from
Tandy/ Radio-Shack. Almost any t ype
will do. I experiment ed wit h different
models from 22K t o 100K
and all worked fine aft er replacing
t he t rimmer pot . The one used in t he
above circuit diagram was a 50K
model. This 50K was measured at exact ly 25 C and wit h 10% t olerance. The resist ance increases as
t he surrounding t emperat ure decreases. Tolerance for my applicat ion (cooling a large powersupply
coolrib) is 10%. Anot her name for t his t hing is 'NTC'. NTC st ands for "Negat ive Temperat ure
Coef ficient " which means when t he surrounding t emperat ure decreases t he resist ance of t his
t hermist or will increase. I replaced my t hermist or for a 60K hermet ically
sealed glass t ype since t he environment for my applicat ion may cont ain corrosive part icles which
may affect perf ormance on a fut ure dat e. P1 is a regular Bourns t rimmer and adj ust s a wide range
of t emperat ures f or t his circuit .

I used t he 10-t urn t ype for a bit finer adj ust ment but t he regular t ype will work for your
applicat ion.
R1 is a 'securit y' resist or j ust in case t he t rimmer pot P1 is adj ust ed all t he way t o '0' ohms. At which
t ime t he t hermist or would get t he full 12 volt and it will get so hot t hat it put s blist ers on your
fingers... : -)R3 feeds a bit of hyst eresis back int o t he op-amp t o eliminat e relay 'chat t er' when t he
t emperat ure of t he t hermist or reaches it s t hreshold point . Depending on your applicat ion and t he
t ype you use for Q1 and Re1, st art wit h 330K or so and adj ust it s value downwards unt il your
sat isfied. The value of 150K shown in t he diagram worked for me. Decreasing t he value of R2 means
more hyst eresis, j ust don't use more t hen necessary. Or t emporarily use a t rimmer pot and read of f
t he value. 120K worked f or me.
Transist or Q1 can be a 2N2222(A), 2N3904, NTE123A, ECG123A, et c. Not crit ical at all. It act s only
as a swit ch for t he relay so almost any t ype will work, as long as it can provide t he current needed
t o act ivat e t he relay's coil. D1, t he 1N4148, act s as a spark arrest or when t he cont act s of t he relay
open and eliminat es false t riggering. For my applicat ion t he 1N4148 was good enough since t he t iny
relay I used was only 1 amp.
However, you can use a large variet y of
diodes here, my next choice would be a
regular purpose 1N4001 or somet hing
and should be used if your relay t ype
can handle more t hen 1 amp. If you like
t o make your own pcb, t ry t he one
above. The pcb is fit t ed wit h holes for
t he relay but may not fit your part icular
relay. It was designed f or a Aromat HB1DC12V t ype.
The variet y and model of relays is j ust
t o great . How t o mount it t hen? Well, I
left ample space on t he pcb t o mount
your relay. You can even mount it upside-down and connect t he wires
individually.
Use
Silicon
glue,
cyanoacrylat e est er (crazy glue), or
double-sided t ape t o hold t he relay in
place. Works well. Not e t hat t he pcb
and layout is not according t o t he
circuit diagram in regards t o t he hookup
of t he f ans. The PCB measures approximat ely 1.5 x 3 inches (4.8 x 7.6mm) If you print t he pcb t o an
inkj et print er it is probably not t o scale. Try t o fit a 8-pin ic socket on t he print ed copy t o make
sure it f it s before making t he pcb...
