Knowledges prior to Microbiology courses: biology, biochemistry,
physiology, biophysics, immunology, genetics
Objectives of the discipline
The main objectiv of Medical Microbiology is to teach the future medical
doctor to see the microorganisms with the eyes of the mind and to judge
appropiately every medical issue:
-A. To aknowledge the diversity of microorganisms on/ in human body (both
healthy and sick individuals) as well as in the environement.
-B. To know pathways of microorganisms spreading and the consequences
of contamination.
-C. To aknowledge the risk of contamination in medical settings.
-D. To understand the role of microorganisms related to health and diseases
condition.

biological, taxonomic and pathogenic significance: genome, bacterial
wall, glycocalyx, flagella, axial fiber, bacterial endospore
3. Basic principles of nutrition, metabolism and bacterial cutivation and
growth.
4. Microbial genetics (the role of bacterial genetics in pathogenicitz of
infections and bacterial strains evolution, and the role of genetics in
microbiological diagnosis)
5. Relations microorganism-host. Human indigenous microbiota.
Microbial pathogenicity. Anti-infective defence.
6. Infection (definition, sources, transmission, susceptible hosts).
7. Microbiological bases for infection prophylaxis and therapy
(definition, classification, their mechanism of action and activity
spectrum, basic principles of infections prophylaxis, with indication
and contraindication).
For the main genus implicated in human patholohy will be teach: brief
definition, microscopical and cultivation particularities, resistance to
environment factors, pathogenicity factors, list of the main diseases,
microbiological diagnosis, basic principles regarding treatment and
prevention.
