school has a clear vision and determination for continuous school improvement in order to ensure all
children are in receipt of high quality teaching and learning. Our priority is delivering good and outstanding
learning opportunities so children reach at least national attainment levels and more than expected
progress during their time at our school.
We are a family orientated, caring school with high aspirations. Westwood Primary provides a safe,
nurturing, stimulating environment and we look forward to working with families.
Our children mostly live in the local community but we also attract families from further away. We value
the support of the school community which includes children, parents, staff, and governors as well as local
organisations and businesses in the Lowestoft area
The school only employs good and outstanding teachers and teaching assistants to ensure children have
access to high quality learning and achieve their full potential. The team is supported by other members of
the school community who fully engage with the ethos and vision of the school.
Welcome to our school! Do not hesitate to speak with us further; we look forward to sharing with you these

Daily Organisation

Admissions

We are a one form entry school (30 children

per class) and children are put into classes
with other children in the same academic
year. Classes are of mixed ability and the
teachers plan their lessons to cover the
needs of all the children.

At present, Westwood Primary School

continues to adopt Suffolk Local Education
Authority Admission Policy. However,
Suffolk LEA are responsible for managing
Reception intake admissions. Westwood
Primary School manages any admission
which is not for the Reception September
intake. Full details of the LAs Admissions
policy and procedures are set out in the
School Admissions section of the Suffolk
County Council website. An admission
guidance document is available on our
website and at the school office.

The school has three areas, which work

closely together.
Early Years Foundation Stage, for our
Nursery and Reception classes, aged 3-5
Key Stage 1, is for Years 1 and 2, children
aged 5-7.
Key Stage 2, is for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6
children aged 7-11.
We welcome parents into school in a variety
of ways, sharing books with children, playing
games, helping with gardening or craft
activities and special events. Parents may
visit the school at any time and we operate
an open door policy.

Our published admission number is up to 30

children for each year group.
You can find information of the Suffolk
County Council website including the
admission guidance.
If you wish to admit your child to school
please contact the school.
If you wish to admit your child to our
Nursery please contact the school office
01502 565673.
.

Nursery
We have a school Nursery which currently
has 26 places for children aged 3 years and
over at any stage of their personal
development. The Nursery is staffed by a
Nursery Teacher, Nursery Nurse and
Teaching Assistant. Children are admitted
to Nursery during the term after their 3rd
birthday. The majority of our Nursery
children transfer to our Main School.
However, being in the Nursery does not
guarantee a school place and an application
to the school is made separately. Staff can
provide details. Please ask for a copy of our
Nursery Brochure for further details.

Full Time School

Full time school begins in the Reception
Class during the academic year in which
they will turn 5 years old. Your child will
then progress into Year 1 eventually leaving
us at the end of Year 6.
By law your child has to start full-time
education in the term of their fifth
birthday. At Westwood Primary, we
encourage children to begin Reception in
the September of the academic year they
become five
We welcome all new children and families to
our school and before your child starts
school you will be invited to visit, to meet
the Headteacher and to meet your childs
class teacher.

on Twitter.

Arrivals and Departures.

In the interest of safety, children enter and leave by the gate by the bike shed, the gate at the
rear of the school (Belaugh Avenue) and the Nursery gate. Vehicular access is via the main gates
on Westwood Avenue.
Both Westwood Avenue and Belaugh Avenue are very busy at the start and end of the school
days. We ask you to park cars sensibly avoiding the zigzag lines and avoiding parking on the curb.
We ask parents to avoid the school car park at the beginning and end of the school days unless
access has been agreed in advance or for an emergency. The site manager monitors the car park
at the beginning and end of the school day.

Safeguarding at Westwood
Primary School

Pupil and Parent Support Advisor.

Mrs Dawn Williams is our Pupil and Parent
Support Advisor and is available to speak to
parents, carers and families on a daily basis.
She is very experienced and can provide
advice on a range of different parent and
family matters. If you need any help, advice
or just a listening ear, please contact her
through the school office.

Safeguarding children and adults in our

school is our top priority. It is important
that all staff, volunteers, Governors and our
community work together on this.
For this reason all school staff, regular
volunteers, Governors and visiting staff such
as coaches all have to possess valid enhanced
DBS check.
We are committed to following Suffolk and
National guidance and laws; therefore we
have a clear policy (copy available from the
School Office), procedures and regularly
undertake training. We are committed to
working closely with other agencies and
professionals i.e. School Nurse and Police.

Parents in School
We like to make you, as a parent, feel
welcome in the school and to be involved with
your childs education. We provide
opportunities throughout the school year for
parents to come into school and work with
their children or observe learning
experiences. We keep in touch with parents
through a termly newsletter which outlines
many of the events taking place in school. We
also keep in touch via our texting service,
Twitter, Facebook and our school website

Meeting with Teachers

We have an open door policy. Parents are
always welcome to come into school and
speak to the teachers. Often at the
beginning or end of the school day / nursery
session there is an opportunity for a brief
informal chat with staff as you collect your
child. Teachers are happy to make
appointments for more formal chats. The
Headteacher is usually available to speak
with parents. At busy times, you may be
asked to make an appointment.

Attendance and Absence

We need to be notified of any absences from school on the first day of
absence. We have a 24-hour answering service. For safety of children we will
text or phone families in the morning to check their whereabouts, if we have no
information. Westwood Primary follows national guidelines for managing attendance. Regular
absence from school will be monitored by the school and you will be contacted if your childs
attendance is an issue. Regular illness may be checked with your childs doctor.
National guidelines for holiday absence are followed.
There is now strict criteria and holidays will all be recorded as unauthorised.
We also ask that routine medical/dental appointments take place out of school time.
We celebrate good attendance and punctuality weekly. Classes with good attendance can earn a
breakfast with the teachers. Children with 96%+ attendance receive certificates at special
assemblies to which parents and families are invited. Most of the children achieve a good level
of attendance and arrive at school on time.
Last year our absences were recorded as follows:
Percentage of pupils absent for a session (mornings and afternoons are counted separately)
whose absence was authorised was: 4.8%
Percentage of pupils absent for a session whose absence was unauthorised was: 0.6%

Wearing of Jewellery
Jewellery should not be worn for school. Older children may wear a watch. Children with
pierced ears may wear one stud earring in each ear.
It is school policy that all jewellery is removed for PE and swimming. In the case of
earrings, these must be removed or covered with a plaster.

Lunch Arrangements
School dinner is available at the cost of 2.30 a day
(September 2014). Although we can take dinner money
on the day, it is easier if dinner money is for the whole week,
on Monday, in a named purse or envelope. If your child is
absent from school the money will be credited so there is
less to pay the following week. Cheques are accepted.

Free meals are available to those children who are

eligible. If you think you are eligible details can be
requested at the school office. It is important that
you apply even if children have free dinners occasionally,
as it will help increase our school funding.
From September 2014 all children in Reception, Year 1 or
Year 2 are entitled to receive a free school meal every day. It is a
government incentive and is being paid for nationally. Your child does not have to have a school meal. You
may send your child with a packed lunch or take them home for dinner. Or you may choose for your child to
have a school meal some days and a packed lunch others.
This is new! Previously you could only claim for a free school meal if you met certain criteria but now all
children, in the named classes, can have a free meal regardless of whether or not parents meet the criteria.
For children in Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6, parents need to apply in the normal way for free school
meals.
BUT
For children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 if you are eligible for free school meals and meet the
previous criteria you still need to complete a form!!
WHY DO I STILL NEED TO FILL IN A FORM?
There have been changes to the ways in which schools are funded. We receive additional funding at the
school which is targeted at the children who are entitled to a free school meal, whichever year group they
are in. The more children registered for free school meals, the more money we receive to spend on them.
SoWe still need all parents in all year groups to register children for free school meals if you meet the
criteria.
If you think you are eligible or are just unsure whether you may be, please enquire at the school office as a
matter of urgency.
Your child does not have to have a free school meal every day, but if you are entitled to one, then the school
will receive extra money. If you are not registered, we will miss out on the money.
Please mention this to friends and family so we can ensure Westwood Primary School receives the money we
are entitled to.

Advice of eligibility for Free School Meals = 01473260989.

Children who have packed lunches sit with those having school meals. Assistants supervise children at
lunchtime. There is also a senior member of staff on duty over the lunch period. Packed lunch boxes need
to be named. We encourage children to eat a varied and balanced lunch. Fizzy drinks and drinks like coke
are not allowed for packed lunches. Please do not send sweets in packed lunches.

Administration of Medicine

Illness at School

The Governing Body has approved an

Administration of Medicine Policy. If your
child is ill, then the best place for them is
at home. Medicines will only be
administered during school time on special
occasions and with written permission. If
your child has asthma, diabetes, ADHD or
any long-term condition or illness, then
arrangements will be made for their care
including any prescribed medication to be
given.

If your child is ill during the school day,

you will be contacted. We ask parents to
keep contact telephone numbers up to
date in case of the need to call in an
emergency.
Red Letters are given out if a child
gets a minor knock to the head at school.
This is just to inform you about it. In the
event of a more serious injury we will
contact you and incident forms have to be
completed.

School Health Service

Water
We believe that children should be able to
drink at any time during the day. We
encourage children to bring a water bottle to
school each day. Children are able to refill
bottles as required. Water is also on the
tables at lunchtime. Water bottles can be
purchased from the school office.

Children have a health assessment during

their first year in full-time education
(Reception) and again in Year 6. The local
area has a team of school nurses available
to support children and families.

Snack at morning play

We are pleased to advise you that we take
part in the free fruit for schools initiative
provided by the Government. This is available
every day to Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and
Year 2. Other year groups may bring a fruit
snack from home.

Asthma & Allergies

At Westwood Primary specific staff has
received training and follow Suffolk Policy.
If your child suffers from asthma, it is our
policy to store inhalers securely in their
classroom. Your child has access to his/her
inhaler whenever necessary. Likewise if your
child has Diabetic of Epi-pen medication it is
looked after accordingly. For some children a
School Health Care Plan is written with the
support of the school nurse or the specialist
nurses from the local NHS services.

Breakfast Club
As part of our extended schools services we
run a successful breakfast club during term
time.
The club is 1.50 per day. We have two
breakfast club leaders who supervise the
children. The times are:
8.00am 8.30am

10

Positive Behaviour
Our positive behaviour policy has been developed by staff, children, parents and governors. It
aims to provide a consistent set of rules for positive behaviour and sets out a fair range of
rewards and sanctions. A detailed policy is available by request at the school office and is on the
school website. A clear anti-bullying policy is also outlined in this document.
We have school rules which are:
1. Be kind to everyone
2. Do your best at work and play
3. Take care of our school
We believe that all children have the right to learn, and teachers have the right to teach in a
calm and orderly classroom. We believe all children have a right to feel safe in school. We also ask
the children to make class agreements each year. We reward our childrens achievements in a
weekly assembly. There are also clear consequences for poor behaviour.
We promote The Westwood Way. This includes the consistent use of brilliant manners, being a
role model for others and keeping to the school rules. We expect children to be polite and
respectful to all members of our community at all times.

Home School Agreement

Parent Interview/Reports
There are several opportunities for you to
meet with your childs teacher throughout
the year. Some of these are formal where
we invite you to a parents interview to
discuss your childs progress and other
occasions where we invite you in to have a
look at the work your childs class have
done. On two occasions a year you will be
given the opportunity to become involved
with setting targets for your child to
achieve.

Our Home/School agreement will be given

to you when your child registers at the
school. There will be two copies. One copy
we ask you as parents to sign to say that
you understand and accept the
agreement. The other copy is returned
to school.

All Aboard the Learning Bus

We follow the 4 principles from family
Action which enable children to:
Maximise Learning
Get a Good Nights Sleep
Eat a Good Breakfast
Get to School on Time
Follow the School Rules

they ride their bike to school. It is advised
that a helmet should also be worn. For
safety cycles/scooters must not be ridden

During the school year the children

may take part in educational visits.
Teachers will write to parents with full
details and for parents permission.
We strongly believe that visits and
experiences beyond the classroom
really enrich and deepen childrens
learning.

12

Early Years Foundation Stage

Our 3 to 5 year olds work towards the Early Learning Goals.
The children engage in planned activities and child initiated
play to build upon knowledge, skills and understanding. The
Early Years curriculum is organised around seven areas:
The three prime areas are:Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical
Development and Communication and Language.
The four specific areas are:Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding of the World and
Expressive arts and Design.
A separate document called Welcome to Nursery and Reception
outlines the curriculum in more detail and is available from the
school office.

The Curriculum
The school curriculum is a structure of learning experiences, presented to each child as a
balanced programme, which closely matches each childs stage of development. Staff teach a
flexible, investigative creative curriculum which gives real purpose to learning. We ensure that
childrens learning is built up from the roots of Early Years and delivered in a skills based
thematic way.
Children in Years 1-6 follow the Westwood Primary School Curriculum which is incorporates much
of the National Curriculum. Children study English, Maths, Science, Computing, History,
Geography, Physical Education, Music, Art, Design and Technology, Personal, Social and Health
Education and Religious Education. However, these subject are generally taught using crosscurricular links where appropriate and also discrete teaching when necessary. Our curriculum has
been carefully planned to best meet the needs of the children who attend our school. It is
reviewed regularly to ensure it is purposeful, exciting and engaging and children can rehearse,
apply and evaluate the skills, knowledge and understanding they acquires across a broad range of
subjects. We endeavour to learn from and create lifelong learners with extended horizons.

13

English
The Curriculum for English is divided into
three areas:
Speaking and listening
Reading
Writing

Science
Science is embedded within the curriculum
topic plan throughout the school. Children are
giving opportunities to experiment, find out
how things work, make careful observations and
develop thinking, questioning and enquiry skills.

All English teaching is based on the core

learning objectives from the National
Curriculum which outlines a detailed and clear
structure for the systematic teaching of
reading, writing and spelling.

We have excellent environmental provision

including extensive grounds, woodlands and an
environment area which includes a pond. These
are all used to enhance the teaching of
Science.

Speaking and listening skills are developed

through a variety of activities such as drama,
stories, role play, and discussion and within all
subjects.

Digital Literacy and Computing.

The school is well equipment to deliver the
Digital Literacy and Computing curriculum. We
have a central information suite as well as
ipads, desktops and laptops in all classrooms.

Writing is taught systematically throughout

the school beginning with mark making
activities and letter formation and then
sentence structure, grammar and punctuation.
Children write for a real purpose which
includes stories, poetry and factual
information.

Children have regular opportunities to develop

their skills and knowledge through discrete and
cross curricular teaching both computing and
Digital Literacy.

Spelling is based on Letters and Sounds and

the Westwood Primary School Spelling,
Grammar and Punctuation document (derived
from the National Curriculum).

The school has an E-Safety Policy in place and

ensures children, staff and parents receive
regular updates in relation to internet safety.

Children take part in reading activities daily.

Our aim is to encourage a love of reading and
we foster an interest in books for pleasure
and to gain information.
Mathematics
Maths is taught using the National Curriculum
in conjunction with Improve Maths. We cover
all aspects of maths giving particular
emphasis to those aspects of number and
calculation which help children to become
fully numerate, Children are taught to use
and apply basic skills in the following areas of
Maths:
Problem solving
Number
Shape, space and measure
Handling data

Foundation Subjects
Themes include, History, Geography Design and
Technology, PE, Art, Music, RE and PSHE and
have been developed throughout the school.
They are delivered as part of our topic
curriculum and provide a creative, investigative
and balanced curriculum. In addition we teach a
foreign language to our KS2 children.

14

Religious Education and Collective Worship

In our school, collective worship and religious
education are non-denominational in
character and are in accordance with the
requirements of the 1944 Education Act and
the Education Reform Act 1988. Teaching of
religious education in this school is within the
guidelines of the new Suffolk Agreed
Syllabus. Parents may, if they wish, withdraw
their children from the arrangements for
worship and religious education. If you wish
make such
requestbasis

betodiscussed
on aapersonal
. Headteacher,
please do so in writing, and arrangements for
alternative provision will be discussed on a
personal basis.

Additional Support
During a childs time in school, they may
experience difficulties with their learning
which needs additional support. If your child
needs this further support, you will be
contacted and with your permission your child
will be placed on the Special Needs Register.
This means your child may receive an Individual
Education Plan (IEP) and will access additional
support. You will be fully involved in the
process, and we will ask for your permission if
we need to ask another professional for help
and advice.
Enrichment Activities
Our school is committed to work life balance
and all the teaching staff has 10% non-teaching
time per week for planning, preparation and
assessment. During this time the school
delivers enrichment afternoons run by support
staff. Areas offered include, Art, Design
Technology, Music, and Computing, Environment
studies, gardening and Sport.

Sex Education and Drug Education

Sex education is seen as a joint

school/parent responsibility. More formal sex
education takes place in Year 5 and Year 6.
Parents are always consulted before it is
taught and we have a sex education policy.
Drug education is taught in the context of
taking care of oneself, and is delivered
through the Science and Personal, Social and
Health Education programme

More Able Pupils

In the case of gifted, talented and able
children, we provide an appropriate challenging
programme to meet their needs and if
necessary seek advice to ensure all children
fulfil their potential.
The school also has a gifted, talented and able
register monitored by the staff member
responsible.

Homework
Your child will bring homework home and we
ask that you help your child with this and
encourage them to read when they do not
have any homework to do. Your childs class
teacher will be able to give you details of the
homework given each week. This will be
recorded in the Home/School communication
book. A Homework leaflet is issued at the
start of each school year and is available on
request from the school office.

Through our curriculum, we aim to enable pupils

to think creatively and critically and to solve
problems. We believe the needs of all pupils,
including the more able, are best met through
an enriched, flexible curriculum, which gives
real purpose to learning.

15

Pupil Premium
In our school, Pupil Premium is used to
improve teaching and learning which has a
direct impact on pupils progress and
improved outcomes for narrowing the gap
both in school and nationally. A range of
strategies and teaching initiatives are used
which address these principles:
Staff professional development
Teaching in small booster groups
Learning resources
Social and emotional resources.

PE Premium
PE Premium is used to improve outcomes for
children in PE. PE premium has a direct
impact on pupils access to high quality PE and
school sport and improved outcomes for
promoting healthy lifestyles.
PE premium received in 2014 was used in the
following ways:
Staff professional development
Funding for pre and after school sport
Purchasing resources so new sports
can be taught
The governors and senior leaders are
monitoring the impact and effectiveness of
PE Premium Funding. More information can be
found on the school website.

The governors and senior leaders are

monitoring the impact and effectiveness of
Pupil Premium Funding using the school
tracking system and school self-evaluation
tools.

Transition Arrangement
