Introduction
This Engineering Technical Specification covers the requirements of the Piping Classes to be used
at Stanlow Manufacturing Complex and Outlying Sites.
2.
Scope
This Engineering Technical Specification contains Stanlow Piping Classes, specifying
recommended piping materials to be used for process piping at Stanlow Refinery
(all within the property limits as defined in ANSI B.31.3 para 300.1)
It takes precedence to Piping classes Refining and Chemicals DEP 31.38.01.12.
(See Work Instruction PRJ. D.2.10. This sets down guidelines for selection and control of Piping
classes at Stanlow.)
It does not replace Special Piping Classes which have been compiled as part of
Stanlow upgrading projects, or PU specific Piping Classes with special material requirements.
The basis of design of the piping classes is given in DEP 31.38.01.10-Gen.
DEP 31.38.01.11- Gen specifies the general requirements for piping systems and includes some
design related requirement for specific services, e.g. hydrogen fluoride, sulphuric acid, sodium
hydroxide, chlorine.
See Section 6 for Index of Stanlow PU Specific Piping Classes.
See Section 7 for Piping Class Conversion Table (Rev F to Rev G)

Ball valve class preferred by most chemical plants and/or for services requiring frequent valve
operations.
2.
Selection between 1 and 3 mm corrosion allowance depending on the corrosivety of the medium
has to be selected by the corrosion engineer.
3.
For the definition of "High sour" and "Moderate sour", see DEP 31.38.01.11-Gen., Appendix 10.
For new construction and/or modifications to existing piping, this Appendix should be used to
determine the severity of the wet H2S process environment and the piping class/materials
selected accordingly, taking into account economics and material availability.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Selection shall be carried out by materials engineer on the basis of the specific process
conditions.
9.
Hydrocarbon service includes aviation alkylate, LPG, C1-C4, paraffins and olefins, fuel gas, fuel
oil, gasoil, gasoline, isopentane, luboil, naphtha, pentane, toluene and xylene.
10.
11.
12.
H2 partial pressure < 7 bar; wet H2S < 50 mg/kg; wet HCN < 20 mg/kg; S < 0.3 wt. %;TAN < 0.3;
H2S < 0.01 mol.%
13.
14.
Consult a materials engineer for a check on the high temperature sulphidation corrosion rate and
select materials accordingly.
15.
16.
See DEP 31.38.01.11-Gen., Appendix 10 for piping in sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) service
The same requirements are applicable to potassium hydroxide service.
