ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST CERTIFICATION - CES
Now, there is an opportunity for environmental professionals who are not engineers to
receive special recognition for their education and work experience. The CES was
originally developed to serve the many environmental scientists and specialists employed
by the U.S. EPA. Because many environmental specialists cannot be away from work for
long periods of time, we have now intensified the learning and testing procedures of the
CES program so that you can complete the program in one very concentrated day.

The purpose of the Certified Environmental Scientist (CES) credential is to establish a

person's understanding of the basic principles of environmental science, including: chemistry,
physics, earth science, biology, meteorology, zoology and environmental health. A
comprehensive CES Study Guide is provided as part of the workshop registration.

PREREQUISITES
Education: Bachelor's degree in an environmentally-related discipline. Three (3) years of
acceptable work experience may be substituted for each year of an academic degree program.

Work Experience: Three (3) years directly related to an environmental science.

Exam Requirements: 90 minute timed exam, 100 multiple-choice scaled questions. The
questions are designed to determine an individual's knowledge relative to the science
coordination and management of environmental programs. The general topics covered on the
exam include knowledge of Air Pollution, Biosolids, Brownfields, Clean Air Act, Clean Water
Act, Ecosystems, Hazardous Waste, Human Health, Indoor Air Quality, Mercury, Molds, Oil
Programs, Ozone, Pesticides, Radiation, Solid Waste Disposal.

Who should take the CES?

The CES certification is open to any individual who has an interest in improving his/her
environmental work status in the private, public, and academic sectors. A CES certification
helps to demonstrate that technicians, supervisors and managers have received training in the
basic environmental sciences. You will want to become CES certified if you are in any of the
following groups:
You work for a governmental agency.
You work for a private organization that performs environmental sampling or testing.
You work for a firm who are consultants, manufacturers, attorneys, etc.
A minimum of 3 years of environmentally-related experience is needed. We will help get
you up to speed with the environmental regulations, testing and sampling techniques.
