3CC SYSTEM

Technical Specification
SHORT SPECIFICATION - 3CC SYSTEM:
(To appear in Main Specification & on Drawings)
All concrete (specify areas) to be produced by an approved
supplier and constructed in accordance with the Main
Specifications and drawings and strictly in accordance with
current Cementaid 3CC SYSTEM Detailed Technical
Specifications, using only Cementaid added ingredients and
concrete containing not less than 350kgs of cement per cubic
metre, and having a W:C ratio not in excess of 0.45, in
conjunction with structural reinforcement of hard rib
deformed bar and top steel reinforcement grid and other
details conforming to current recommendations and
requirements of Cementaid.

DETAILED SPECIFICATION - 3CC SYSTEM:

(To be included in full in Main Specification)
1. CONCRETE:
All concrete must comform to current National Standard
Specifications and be designed, WITHOUT ADDITIVES, for
Fc of at least 30N.mm2 or greater if required by the
Engineer, at slumps not less than 50mm and not greater than
150mm.
1.1 Cement Content:
From considerations of heat development or durability or for
other reasons, the specifier will decide whether to use
Portland Cement (PC) only, Portland cement and ground
granulated Blast Furnace Slag (ggBFS), [recommended for
slabs > 400mm thick] or Portland cement and fly ash (PFA).
When ggBFS is used, it can present up to a maximum of 65%
of the total cementitious content. When PFA is used, the
corresponding maximum percentage is up to 30%.
The minimum contents of cementitious material (in kg/m3)
shall be:
Mix

Total Cementitious PC Content

PC only

350

PC / ggBFS

400

160

PC / PFA

380

300

The responsibility for ensuring that the correct minimum

cement content is contained in the concrete always rests
with the Contractor. Cement contents shall be recorded
by the concrete producer on each concrete docket.
1.2 Admixtures:
All concrete shall contain Cementaid Superplastet (F, SR or G),
high range water reducing agent at a rate of 0.8 - 1.5 % by
weight of cement, (or cement plus ggBFS, PFA etc.). The level
and type of Superplastet will be according to ambient
temperature or as recommended by Cementaid. The concrete
shall further contain Cementaid 3CC, Structural Damproofing
Ingredient, at the rate of 15 litres per cu. m. of concrete, such
that the concrete shall have a corrected 30 minute absorption of
not greater than 1.5% (one point five percent) as measured by
BS 1881: Part 122: 1983, except that the age at test shall be 7
days. Water contents are to be reduced accordingly to allow for
the effects of the ingredients on the concrete slump, and the
concrete is to be mixed thoroughly. In all cases, the free water :
cement ratio shall not exceed 0.45. No other admixtures or
ingredients are to be included or allowed for in the concrete
unless specifically authorised by Cementaid in writing.
1.3 Concrete Suppliers:
Not all premixed concrete producers are automatically
approved for 3CC SYSTEM quality concrete. The Contractor
should contact Cementaids local Manager to confirm
approval of proposed concrete producers before ordering
concrete.
Cementaid approval does not remove responsibility for basic
concrete quality and minimum cement contents stated here,
from the concrete producer or the Contractor ordering the
concrete. The premix supplier must be able to ensure
continuity of supply to avoid colds joints, etc.
1.4 Trial Mixes:
The concrete producer, with Cementaid present, shall mix and
test a trial mix of concrete(s) containing the 3CC System
ingredients, to satisfy the Engineer that the enhanced concrete
conforms to strength, water : cement ratio, slump, and other
performance requirements.
The trial mixes should endeavour to minimise the fine aggregate
percentage and shrinkage potential as well as optimise other
properties of the concrete. After satisfactory completion and
approval of the trial mixes, compliance of the concrete with the

pg1/3

mix description, slump and absorption requirements shall be the

responsibility of the Main Contractor and / or concrete
producer.
1.5 Testing:
The Engineer reserves the right to require the concrete as placed
and cured in the actual structure, to conform with the absorption
requirement within 7 days of placement. The Contractor shall
provide costings for absorption testing by an approved
Laboratory, and if so required, absorption samples shall be
taken during construction as directed by the Engineer. These
samples shall be tested as above and shall conform with the
absorption requirement. Care shall be taken to prevent early
moisture loss from all 3CC System concrete test samples,
including those for compressive strength, by immediate
covering with polythene sheet and protection from direct sun
and wind prior to water immersion.
1.6 Slump:
Concrete must not be placed with slump greater than 150mm
or less than 50mm. Flowing concretes with slump greater than
150mm are only allowed when the mix design is altered to
accommodate such flowing slumps and with the approval of
the Engineer and Cementaid.
Where required, SUPERPLASTET F, (non-retarding), may be
used for re-dosing at site to attain workable slump and to
prevent excessive retardation.
For such re-tempering, the level of addition of
SUPERPLASTET F to the concrete will depend on the slump
at the time of addition and the desired workability. Generally,
a dosage of between 0.1 and 0.3 litres per 100kg of cement
would suffice.
After SUPERPLASTET addition, the
workability would be enhanced for approx. 30-45 minutes
depending on temperature and age of concrete.
SUPERPLASTET F can be safely re-dosed several times
provided there is no segregation. However, with each addition
the zeta potential of the concrete will continue to increase
making it more sticky and difficult to place. Therefore more
that two re-dosages of SUPERPLASTET should be avoided.
Re-tempering if the concrete is more than 4 hours old in
temperate climates or 3 hours in tropical climates is not
recommended.
2. CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES:
2.1 Placing:
Concrete shall not be placed with air temperature below 4C
or above 35C without the approval of the Engineer and
suitable modification of admixture dosage according to
Cementaid recommendations.
Refer to current Code requirement for hot weather
concreting.
During and immediately after placing in the forms, the
concrete shall be thoroughly compacted by means of
continuous tamping, spading and slicing, and be consistent
with current Codes of Practice and Cementaid

recommendations. Care shall be taken to fill every part of the

forms, to force concrete under and around reinforcing without
displacing it, to work back coarse aggregate from the face and
to remove all air bubbles and voids. Concrete which cannot be
placed free from honeycombs, or segregation, shall be
rejected by the contractor. Compaction shall be assisted by
sufficient number of approved immersion type vibrators. They
shall provide sufficient intensity to cause the concrete to
compact rapidly into place. The number of internal vibrators
provided shall be sufficient to consolidate the incoming
concrete within 15 minutes. Vibrators shall not be held
against forms or reinforcing steel, nor used for flowing the
concrete or spreading into place. Vibrators shall not be held
in one position so long as to result in segregation of concrete
materials or formation of laitance on the surface.
2.2 Troweling:
Concrete shall be brought to a fine, dense finish using a
mechanical trowel. The steel trowelled finish may then be
roughened if required, by broom or wood float, for subsequent
applied finishes or traction, etc.
2.3 Curing & Cooling:
Wind-breaks, sun-shades and other protection shall be
installed as required, to protect against early loss of moisture
from the concrete.
Cementaid CALVAP, Evaporation
Retardant, can be used to reduce early moisture loss.
Immediately after trowelling and as soon as the concrete is
hard enough to withstand a mans weight without marking,
apply a sprayed application of Cementaid CALCURE CR or
D, membrane curing compound, at a minimum rate of
1 litre / 5m, followed by light water ponding or water spray
for at least 7 days. Sections greater than 400mm thickness
shall further be covered with min. 1000 gauge polythene sheet
for a minimum of 7 days to minimise temperature differential
within section.
2.4 Formwork
Formwork shall be left in place for a minimum of three days,
or if removed befor 3 days, Cementaid CALCURE B shall be
applied at the minimum rate of 5m2 per litre.
2.5 Loading on Slabs
During the construction phase, the age and level of loading on
slabs shall be approved by the Engineer. Removal of propping
for 3CC System suspended slabs shall be approved in writing
by the Engineer.
2.6 Finishes, etc.
Completed sections or surfaces of 3CC System concrete shall
be inspected and approved for water-tightness in reasonable
time before application of, or obstruction by applied finishes,
renders, landscaping, permanent plant and equipment etc.
3. GENERAL DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:
3.1Reinforcement:

pg2/3

All structural reinforcement shall be hard ribbed deformed

(h.r.d) bar to Engineers detail drawings.
3.2 Special Temperature Reinforcement: (Roof Slabs &
Jointless Ground Floor Slabs)
Minimum top steel requirement shall be hard rib deformed
(h.r.d) bar or mesh, 12mm diameter, continuous both ways, at
300mm centres, with concrete cover to steel not less than
25mm, nor greater than 40mm. Equivalent steel of 10mm bars
or mesh, at 200mm centres is recommended to be used if
available. This minimum temperature grid steel may be
included in the Engineers structural requirements, but must
be continuous in both directions.
3.3 Re-entrant Angles:
Where re-entrant angles occur, three 10mm h.r.d bars, spaced
100mm apart must be placed top and bottom, at 90 degrees
across the angles.
3.4 Slab / Beam Interface:
Lapping bars, minimum Y12, shall be used to provide
continuous reinforcement for bottom slab reinforcing over
beam supports, to prevent cracking due to sectional change.
3.5 Section Thickness:
Concrete thickness to be as specified and not less than
150mm. Variation in thickness would be subject to
Cementaid approval and discussion with the Engineer.
3.6 Construction Joints:
All construction joints and penetrations in the concrete must
be formed and constructed strictly in accordance with current
Cementaid recommended details and materials, attached and
available from your Cementaid Representative.
Construction joints in slabs shall be formed as step or key
joints. All joint formwork to be treated with Cementaid
CALSTRIP Surface Retarding Form Release Agent.
Immediately upon removal of joint form, the retarded mortar
is to be thoroughly washed away to produce a clean,
roughened surface.
Cementaid Everdure Waterstop to be firmly affixed by
contact adhesive to the angle of the clean step joint prior to
casting, and protected from premature wetting. (Alternatively,
use Everdure Grout Pipe)

Immediately prior to continuing casting, the joint surface is to

be liberally and thoroughly brushed with Cementaid
WELDCRETE / cement slurry (1 part : 2 parts), taking care to
avoid coating of the Everdure Waterstop strip. New concrete
is to be placed directly against the prepared step
joint, and properly compacted into the wet Weldcrete /cement
slurry. Do not allow the WELDCRETE slurry to dry out,
otherwise bond failure may occur. If drying occurs, re-apply
WELDCRETE slurry before proceeding
3.6 Expansion Joints:
Expansion joints will be permitted in the slab but must
conform to the details provided by the Engineer.
3.7 Projections:
For cast in place projections, Cementaid Everdure
Waterstop is firmly affixed around the middle or waist
of the projection and protected from wetting prior to
casting the 3CC concrete.
For projections which have been positioned through
prepared openings, the surfaces of the opening are to be
thoroughly roughened, cleaned and primed with
WELDCRETE/cement slurry, then the space is filled with
Cementaid CALGROUT NO. 7, Non-shrink Grout
containing 3CC at the rate of 5ml. per kilo of
CALGROUT.
4. FIELD SERVICE
4.1 All works shall be subject to supervision by a
representative of the Client.
4.2 Site monitoring / attendance by a representative of
Cementaid shall be provided during all 3CC System concrete
pours, this company being notified at least 48 hours before
a pour commences, and at each stage of the proceedings.
Cementaid attendance does not constitute supervision, which
remains the responsibility of the Contractor.
