Desalination refers to the process of removing salt and other minerals from water.
The desalinated water is then used for human consumption or in industries. There are
mainly two types of desalination processes: thermal distillation and membrane-based
desalination.
Membrane-based desalination, such as reverse osmosis (RO) technology, uses semipermeable membranes and pressure to separate salts from water. Membrane-based
desalination is becoming the desalination technology of choice as it has proven to
reduce overall desalination costs.
Hyflux is acknowledged as a global leader in membrane-based desalination solutions.

The Souk Tleta Desalination Plant is a joint venture project with Malakoff Berhad of Malaysia
and the state-owned Algeria Energy Company. It marked Hyfluxs entry into the water
treatment market in the region.
Situated just 50 m from the coast, the desalination plant employs Hyfluxs ultrafiltration
membrane technology for the pre-treatment process, followed by a reverse osmosis treatment
process. The water produced is for Algerias state-owned national water company and the
national oil company.

NEWater is a term coined by PUB, Singapores national water agency, for high-grade
reclaimed water that has been produced from treated used water that is further purified using
advanced membrane technologies and ultraviolet disinfection, making it ultra-clean and safe
to drink.
The Bedok NEWater Plant is Singapores first NEWater plant, and it marked Hyfluxs entry
into the municipal water treatment market. The project also featured the first large-scale use
of membranes in a municipal project in Singapore.
Hyflux supplied the process equipment for the plant, which uses ultrafiltration and reverse
osmosis processes and ultraviolet disinfection to treat the secondary effluent to produce
ultra-pure water.

The Jurong Membrane Bioreactor Plant is situated at Jurong Water Reclamation Plant, a
conventional activated sludge wastewater treatment facility. Using biological processes and
microfiltration membranes, wastewater from the industrialised Jurong catchment is treated for
use by industries on Jurong Island.
As a brownfield site, this project presented some challenges. The limited land area meant
that the plant layout had to be designed to minimise overall footprint while detailed planning
and site survey were required to ensure that the existing underground structures were
protected during the retrofit. In addition, the retrofitting work had to be carried out in an
operating plant with minimal disruptions to ongoing operations.
MBRs offer several advantages over conventional wastewater treatment such as small
footprint, easy retrofit and simple operations, in addition to high quality effluent that can be
re-used or safely discharged to coastal, surface or brackish waterways.

Online 2007
The Langfang wastewater treatment plant and water recycling plant is located at the Bohai Rim
Economic Circle and Capital Economic Circle in Hebei Province.
The wastewater treatment plant uses the biological treatment process to treat the wastewater
to meet Chinas Class 1 discharge standard. Some of the treated wastewater undergoes
further treatment to remove other contaminants to a level sufficiently low for re-use.
Growth in demand for recycled water is supported by high-tech factories from machinery,
telecommunications and automotive component industries housed in the concession area.

Tianjin in north China faces water scarcity issues and the municipality of Tianjin is actively
pursuing conservation and expansion of treatment facilities. The Beichen wastewater
treatment plant is located in the Beichen District, along the Jing Jin high-tech industries belt in
Tianjin City.
The presence of a high-tech industrial park in the concession area provides opportunities
for the water recycling plant to supply high-grade recycled water to factories from the
electromechanical manufacturing, biopharmaceuticals, auto parts, food and beverage
processing, and rubber industries.
The plant adopts the biological treatment process to treat wastewater to Chinas Class 1
discharge standard.

Online 2013
Hyflux was awarded the concession by the Peoples Government of Zunyi City to develop a
wastewater treatment plant to treat up to 150,000 m3/day of domestic wastewater for southern
Zunyi City in Guizhou province. Besides undertaking the design and engineering, procurement and
construction works, Hyflux will operate and maintain the plant on a 30-year concession.
Situated in southern Zunyi City, the plant is one of the largest wastewater treatment facilities in
China developed by Hyflux.
The plant adopts the conventional activated sludge process to treat wastewater to Chinas Class 1
discharge standard.

Potable water is simply water that is safe to drink, free from pollution, harmful
organisms and impurities.
Hyfluxs proprietary Kristal ultrafiltration membranes give an added advantage when
purifying water in regions where the water source contains impurities or has a high
salinity content.
26
The Chestnut Avenue Waterworks (CAWW) is Singapores first water treatment plant that
uses membrane-based filtration to produce potable water. The ability to produce water of
consistent and superior quality as compared to conventional water treatment processes
motivated the adoption of advanced membrane technology as the treatment process for raw
water in CAWW.
When completed in 2003, CAWW was one of the worlds largest water treatment plants using
ultrafiltration membranes for the production of potable water.
27
A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES
Hyfluxs strengths lie in the development of cutting-edge technologies, proven
technical capabilities and our ability to deliver world-class water projects. This forms
the basis of our solid foundation built over more than 20 years.
Leveraging on our foundation, our human capital and strategic partnerships, Hyflux is
