Paper sizes

This list of the common American and European paper sizes includes the ISO standards,
which are used globally. All dimensions are specified in inches, millimeters as well as
PostScript points (1/72 inch, always rounded off). The overview covers:

ISO page sizes The ISO A series is the most frequently used page measurement
standard. It includes the DIN A4 format. The ISO B sizes are used for poster printing
while ISO C is meant for envelopes. The SRA standard defines press sheet sizes and is

used in the printing industry.

ISO A paper sizes

The A-series consists of a logical set of paper sizes that are defined by the ISO 216 standard.
The largest size (A0) measures one square meter. The height/width ratio remains constant
(1:1.41) for all sizes. This means you get the A1 size by folding an A0 paper in two along its
shortest side. Then fold the A1 size in two to get an A2 size paper, and so on A-sizes are
used to define the finished paper size in commercial printing: A4 is for office documents, A5
is for notepads and A6 is for postcards.

ISO B paper sizes

The same logic from the A-sizes also applies for the B-series, except here the starting point
was the dimension of one of the sides, which starts at 1 meter. B-sizes are often used for
posters.

American paper sizes

The US and Canada do not use the international standards but instead rely on the paper sizes
below. The ANSI standard was added in 1995 to create a set of size that are based on shared
dimensions. It lacks however the consistent aspect ratio of the ISO A-series.

English paper sizes (writing papers)

The English nowadays use the A-sizes for office and general use. I have no idea whether
many of these definitions are still in use today. Imperial and half-imperial still seem to be
widely used by artists.

For books A-sizes often arent used because A4 is too large and A5 too small. Metric Royal

A0
A0 is a paper size that is typically used for technical drawings and posters.
To output an image properly it needs to have a certain minimum resolution. The number of
pixels depend on the required output quality.

At 300 ppi (pixels per inch) the image needs to be 9933 x 14043 pixels. This is the
required resolution for quality offset printing that will be viewed from a short distance

(such as books, brochures, magazines, calendars). For photos it is also the optimum
resolution but a somewhat lower pixel count (200 to 220 dpi) is acceptable for great

looking photographs.
At 150 ppi the image needs to be 4967 x 7022 pixels. This is the minimum resolution for
newspapers or posters viewed from a fairly short distance.

A digital camera with decent image quality and a resolution of 24 megapixel or more can be
used to print high quality A0 size pictures. Since such posters are usually viewed from a
larger distance a 20 megapixel camera will still offer excellent quality and 16 megapixels will
be considered good by most people.

A1
A1 is a paper size that is typically used for technical drawings, flip charts and posters.
To output an image properly it needs to have a certain minimum resolution. The number of
pixels depend on the required output quality.

At 300 ppi (pixels per inch) the image needs to be 7016 x 9933 pixels. This is the
required resolution for quality offset printing that will be viewed from a short distance
(such as books, brochures, magazines, calendar). For photos it is also the optimum
resolution but a somewhat lower pixel count (200 to 220 dpi) is acceptable for great

looking photographs.
At 150 ppi the image needs to be 3508 x 4967 pixels. This is the minimum resolution for
newspapers or posters viewed from a fairly short distance.

A digital camera with decent image quality and a resolution of 20 megapixel or more can be
used to print high quality A1 size pictures. Since such posters are usually viewed from a
larger distance a 16 megapixel camera will still offer excellent quality and 12 megapixels will
be considered good by most people.

A2
A2 is a paper size that is often used for medium size posters, architectural drawings and
diagrams.

To output an image properly it needs to have a certain minimum resolution. The number of
pixels depend on the required output quality.

At 300 ppi (pixels per inch) the image needs to be 4960 x 7016 pixels. This is the
required resolution for quality offset printing that will be viewed from a short distance
(such as books, brochures, magazines, calendars). For photos it is also the optimum
resolution but a somewhat lower pixel count (200 to 220 dpi) is acceptable for great

looking photographs.
At 150 ppi the image needs to be 2480 x 3508 pixels. This is the minimum resolution for
newspapers or posters viewed from a fairly short distance.

A digital camera with decent image quality and a resolution of 16 megapixel or more can be
used to print high quality A2 size pictures. Since such posters are usually viewed from a
somewhat larger distance a 12 megapixel camera will still offer excellent quality and 8
megapixels will be considered good by many.

A3
A3 is a paper size that is typically used for drawings, diagrams and large tables. It is also
frequently used in laser printers to output two A4 pages as a spread
To output an image properly it needs to have a certain minimum resolution. The number of

optimum resolution but a somewhat lower pixel count (250 dpi) is acceptable for great

looking photographs.
At 150 ppi the image needs to be 1754 x 2480 pixels. This is the minimum resolution for
newspapers or posters viewed from a fairly short distance.

A digital camera with decent image quality and a resolution of 12 megapixel or more can be
used to print high quality A3 size pictures. Since pictures of this size are usually viewed from
a somewhat larger distance an 8 megapixel camera will still offer excellent quality.

A4
A4 is a paper size that is used for a wide range of documents, including magazines, catalogs,
letters and forms.
To output an image properly it needs to have a certain minimum resolution. The number of
pixels depend on the required output quality.

At 300 ppi (pixels per inch) the image needs to be 2480 x 3508 pixels. This is the
required resolution for quality offset printing that will be viewed from a short distance

At 150 ppi the image needs to be 1240 x 1754 pixels. This is the minimum resolution for
newspapers or posters viewed from a fairly short distance.

A digital camera with decent image quality and a resolution of 8 megapixel or more can be
used to print high quality A4 size pictures. A somewhat lower resolution is still fine. Ive had
excellent results with my six megapixel Nikon D70.

A5
A5 is a paper size that is often used for notepads or pocket books.
To output an image properly it needs to have a certain minimum resolution. The number of
pixels depend on the required output quality.

At 300 ppi (pixels per inch) the image needs to be 1748 x 2480 pixels. This is the
required resolution for quality offset printing that will be viewed from a short distance
(such as books, brochures, magazines, calendars). For photo books it is also the
optimum resolution but a somewhat lower pixel count (250 dpi) is acceptable for great

looking photographs.
At 150 ppi the image needs to be 874 x 1240 pixels. This is the minimum resolution for
newspapers or posters viewed from a fairly short distance.

A digital camera with decent image quality and a resolution of 4 megapixel or more can be
used to print high quality A5 size pictures.

A6
A6 is a paper size that is often used for postcards. More exotic uses are small pocket books,
library microfiches and toilet paper.
To output an image properly it needs to have a certain minimum resolution. The number of
pixels depend on the required output quality.

At 300 ppi (pixels per inch) the image needs to be 1240 x 1748 pixels. This is the
required resolution for quality offset printing that will be viewed from a short distance
(such as books, brochures, magazines, calendars). For photo books it is also the

newspapers or posters viewed from a fairly short distance.

A digital camera with decent image quality and a resolution of 2 megapixel or more can be
used to print high quality A6 size pictures.

A7
A7 is a paper size that is typically used for large size Post-it notes. It can also be a practical
size for tickets, since you can print 8 of them on an A4 sheet.
