GEPC has been in the forefront of industrial Air Circuit Breaker installations in India. With an installed
base of over 1,50,000 numbers of Air Circuit Breakers in the country we continue to be one of the
largest suppliers of Air Circuit Breakers in India. These Air Circuit Breakers have proven themselves by
performing in trying and testing conditions for many decades.
Air Circuit Breakers form an integral heart of any electrical installation and our efforts have been to
provide our valued customers with all the necessary tools, processes and spares to ensure that the Air
Circuit Breakers continue to provide trouble free service.
In line with our philosophy to provide customers with all the necessary choices, we are through this
Spare Parts Manual bringing out an exhaustive listing of spares that any ACB user may ever need to
maintain his Air Circuit Breakers in good shape. These spares are made available through one of the
largest channel partner networks in the country and also through over 40 Approved Service Franchise
setups.
A point worth mentioning here is that the Air Circuit Breakers should almost always as a rule be
maintained and serviced by GEPC trained personnel. A GEPC product undergoes many minor changes
to enhance performance from time to time and such intricacies are generally shared with the service
personnel to help them maintain customer ACBs better.
A step further, all the ASF service personnel are adequately trained and have access to our
recommended process of maintenance and also have adequate stock of genuine spares. Importance
of both these counts cannot be diluted. Also an ACB that has NOT been serviced as per
recommendation and specific current carrying parts not serviced properly, the repercussions could be
major, exposing the customer to undue risk and safety issues.
The manual has been made keeping the customers requirements in view and is expected to help in
easier:
1. Identification of parts
2. Ordering of parts through proper Parts Codes.
3. Access to the nearest Service Franchise location.

AIR CIRCUIT BREAKER FAULT ANALYSIS
PROBLEM

BREAKER IS NOT CLOSING

PROBABLE CAUSE
a) Under voltage release not
connected with supply.
b) Under voltage release, Shunt
release, connecting link not
adjusted properly.
c) Under voltage release coil burnt
out or open circuited.
d) After overload or short circuit fault,
breaker not reset (ONLY FOR
MANUALLY RESET TYPE ACB.)
e) Sticking of tripping mechanism
due to excess dust.
On greasing)

PROBLEM

Replace the under voltage release.

d)

Reset the breaker by pressing

OFF/RESET button.

e)

Clean the tripping mechanism with

CRC 2-26 & grease them. (refer section

POSSIBLE SOLUTION
a) Check control wiring of shunt release
and ensure that shunt release gets supply.
b) Check control wiring.
c)

Ensure that pins are in position.

d) Remove the dust from the release and

clean it with CRC 2-26.

PROBABLE CAUSE
a) Trip push buttons connecting link
is short. (Not adjusted properly)
b) Latch of the mechanism jammed
because of dust.

BREAKER IS NOT TRIPPING WITH UNDERVOLTAGE OR SHUNT RELEASE.

PROBABLE CAUSE
a) Shunt release does not get
supply.
b) Supply of under voltage release
does not get cut off.
c) Link pins of under voltage or
shunt release misplaced.
d) Due to dust release becomes
sticky.

PROBLEM

POSSIBLE SOLUTION
a) Give rated voltage to under voltage
release.
b) Adjust the connecting linkage of releases
correctly.

PROBABLE SOLUTION
a) Adjust the push button link correctly
b)

Clean the latch of the mechanism with

CRC 2-26.

ACB IS NOT TRIPPING IN CASE OF OVERLOAD OR SHORT CIRCUIT FAULT

PROBABLE CAUSE
a) Connection between C.T. and
release is loose or open circuit.
b) Overload setting of Release is more
than actual load current.
c) Release linkage
not adjusted properly.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION
a) Tighten the terminals of C.T. in
case of open circuit.
b) Make the overload setting of ACB
as per actual load current.
c) Connect the linkage of

reduced below the specified
specified limit (> 0.5 mm)

c) Use cables or bus bars of adequate rating.
d) Reduce load current or select and install
correct rating of ACB.

BREAKER IS CHARGED WITH MOTOR

PROBABLE CAUSE
a) Motor is not getting supply

a) Clean the deion plates and side

b) Always operate ACB with arc chute

contacts.

EROSION ON ARCING CONTACTS

PROBABLE CAUSE
a) Rough deion plates of
arc chutes.

a) Clean the pole assembly mechanism
With CRC 2-26. Remove grease and dust
With brush and apply fresh grease.
b) Consult the manufacturer of Circuit
Breaker.

Motor is burnt out

POSSIBLE SOLUTION
a) Check the motor circuit.
Replace it if it is damaged.
b) Replace the motor

BREAKER IS NOT CLOSING REMOTELY

PROBABALE CAUSE
a) Breaker is not in service position
b) Closing coil is not getting supply
c)

Closing coil burnt out or open

circuited.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION
a) Take the breaker in service position
b) Check control circuit and ensure that
coil gets supply.
c) Replace the closing coil.
