Dear friends, what makes Malaysia unique? It is the diversity of our peoples.
1Malaysias goal is to preserve and enhance this unity in diversity which has always
been our strength and remains our best hope for the future.
For my opinion, when speaking of unity, in Malaysian context, almost
instantly the first thing that comes to mind is all races living together hand-in-hand in
harmony. Unity comes in many other forms likes the unity in education, cultural
appreciation, socio-economy, political, regional, and each. Malaysia is not only
made up of the Malays, Chinese and Indians. It is also made up of the Peninsular
and East Malaysia, the rich and the poor, the government and the opposition, the
educated and those who are not, the white collars and the blue collars, the young
and the old, the urban dwellers and the village folks, and so on and so forth. With
that in mind, the 1Malaysia policy must cater to the needs of all sectors of the
society and not just focusing on racial relations. Unity should be the basis of all
programmes and activities for nation building.

Malaysians should be more

conscious of their role and contribution towards national unity which is paramount to
the

nations

growth

and

development. We

should

continue

with

greater

determination to strive towards building our multi-racial nation into a united

Malaysian nation with a sense of common and shared destiny. National Unity is very
vital and is the key to Malaysias success. Whether Malaysia will become a fully
developed nation by the year 2020 will depend on a number of important factors, the
most important is being national unity.
Shu Hui, what is your opinion about the concept of unity in diversity in
Malaysia?
There are many ways that can be taken to achieve unity among the
Malaysians. The first way that can be taken to achieve unity among the Malaysians
is the ways to take action through education. Education plays the most crucial role in
sowing the seeds of unity among the people particularly among the young
generation. In order to unite the young people through education, the following
measures need to be sustained and reinforced. First, we should ensure that
educational programs and teachers training at all levels from school to college and
university are directed towards national unity. We should also ensure that the
integration of students of various races in co-curricular activities and associations, in

class and at hostels. Besides that, we should also enhance the teaching of universal
values and local traditions of various races in all schools. We should also ensure
that the inter-racial and intra-racial polarization among students in primary and
secondary schools, colleges, and public and private universities should be
eradicated by implementing activities which encourage them to interact among each
other including the sharing of hostels at university. Furthermore, we can also
achieve the unity of diversity in Malaysia through sports. It is because, children who
play together and eventually will stand together as a nation when they become
adults. On the other hand, government policies on national unity is the nature of
integration, namely through the adjustment with a variety of cultural and social
characteristics that can be accepted by all ethnic groups in our country.
Besides the ways to achieve the unity in diversity through education and
sports, whats others ways that can be taken to ensure that the unity in diversity of
our country can be achieved?
The fifth important to achieve the unity in diversity of our country is the unity
in diversity can be the basis of all programmes and activities for nation building. Its
mean that Malaysians should be more conscious of their role and contribution
towards national unity which is paramount to the nations growth and development.
Unity among the different communities is the crux and core of our survival as a
nation. Lastly, the last important of the unity in diversity in our country is to produce
the peace-loving Malaysian. By fully committed to promoting a culture of peace,
harmony and unity. National development would not be meaningful without
understanding, harmony, goodwill and trust among the multiracial people.
