INTRODUCTION
The Hebrew phrase
( brt) conjures up many images. In
the beginning has become a flashpoint in the ongoing debate about creation
and creation theology and a point of departure for the larger discussion of
the relationship between faith and science.1 For Jews and Christians alike,
this opening phrase of Genesis 1:1 (or, if following Jewish nomenclatura,
brt) has meant more than the combination of the noun rt, beginning,
first, preceded by the preposition b, in. Both its position in the biblical
text and its importance for understanding divine creative activity remind
us of the fact that words are not just casual acquaintances expressing facts,
figures, narrative threads, and powerful emotions. Words are building
blocks of complex concepts and heart-throbbing metaphors and, in context,
help us grasp the bigger picture.
In this study honoring a valued colleague and friend, Dr. Merling
Aloma, whose intellectual rigor and creativity has not only resulted in the
production of significant scholarship on the Pentateuch2 but, as a lover of

INTRODUCCIN

INTRODUCTION
When I first contemplated returning to Andrews University for doctoral
studies, years ago, I vividly remember calling one of my trusted teachers on
the phone, and asking him for counsel as to what he might suggest I research
for my doctoral dissertation. He immediately answered: Study the subject
of leprosy in the Bible. So I returned to Andrews, but I just could not get
interested in leprosy as a topic for a doctoral thesis. And over the years I
have never cared to delve into the biblical teaching on the topic.
Recently, when I was invited to deliver the Darashah (teaching/
sermon) at a Hebrew-Adventist worship service held at Andrews
University, I said yes, and then discovered to my horror that the Parashah
(weekly Torah portion) of the week was Leviticus 12-15, which focuses
upon, yesleprosy. And so the topic Id been avoiding for years had come
back to haunt me. But that is the blessing of observing the Jewish lectionary
system: it forces us to encounter all of Torah, even those portions one
would not choose on his/her own. I was rewarded when I delved into the
biblical teaching regarding leprosy, and fascinated to see the elaborations
and embellishments of the subject in ancient Jewish sources. In the pages
that follow I share some of the intriguing and spiritually rich truths I have
encountered in my study.
45
With pleasure I present this study on the typology of leprosy to honor my good friend and
esteemed colleague, Merling Aloma in this Festschrift.
