ASME 2007 2009
the stress analysis design for the manhole structure of high pressure nitrogen
storage tank was made based on ASME SEC.VIII Div2, 2007 Edition and 2009
Addenda. In the present report, the stress calculation and stress intensity assessment
has been made in detail by use of F.E.M to the manhole structure of high pressure
nitrogen storage tank.

The nozzle of manhole, shell and head have been selected to make the finite
element stress analysis of the structure. The construction dimension of the analysis
object is shown in Fig.1-1 and Fig.1-2. The detailed dimensions are shown in
assembly drawing. The solid modeling is shown in Fig.2.

Based on Part 5-Design by Analysis Requirement of ASME SEC.VIII Div2, 2007
Edition and 2009 Addenda, the following assessment procedure is used to determine
the acceptability of a component using elastic stress analysis method.
STEP 1 Determine the types of loads acting on the component, the load and
boundary conditions are applied to see detail in the Fig.2~Fig.5.
STEP 2 At the point on the vessel that is being investigated, calculate the stress
tensor for each type of load.
General primary membrane equivalent stress Pm
Local primary membrane equivalent stress PL
Primary bending equivalent stress Pb
Secondary equivalent stress Q
Additional equivalent stress produced by a stress concentration or a thermal stress
over and above the nominal (P+Q) stress level-F
STEP 3 Sum the stress tensors assigned to each equivalent stress category.
STEP 4 Determine the principal stresses of the sum of the stress tensors
assigned to the equivalent stress categories, and compute the Von Mises equivalent
stress.
STEP 5 To evaluate protection against plastic collapse, compare the computed
equivalent stress to their corresponding allowable values.

4 Conclusion
ASME
5 2007 2009
Through the stress intensity assessment of the manhole for high pressure nitrogen
storage tank, it is shown that the manhole is safe. The results show that the design of
manhole structure can meet the needs of Part 5-Design by Analysis Requirement of
ASME SEC.VIII Div2, 2007 Edition and 2009 Addenda.
