Through the centuries Filipinos had freely associated, traded, and intermarried with
Chinese merchants (I being one of their descendants) and by cross cultural exchanges had
acquired in part their acute business acumen from the Chinese. All one has to do is see how
Filipinos market, attract clients, and give personalized service. But of course, one has to
attract the attention of the customer before one can serve him/her. Naming businesses is
one aspect of business where Filipinos are masters at. I hope this compendium leaves a
large grin in every Filipino readers face (well, except maybe for Wally and Napoles).
When my girlfriend asked me to name our restaurant, I came up with the name Viand
Muna, which I derived from bayan muna, with the philosophy of prioritizing the clients
needs first, in this case food. Customers would jokingly say, Ha? Bayad muna? Well, it
works. Gets their attention and has good memory recall.
However, its the near name-clones of multinational fast food chains that attract the
most jaw-dropping attention of all. Just consider the following: BigMak Burger, Inc. (burger
stand), Caintacky Fried Chicken (Cainta, Rizal), Cheeny Roaster, Chicha Hut, Jaribee Chicken,
Jerry Bee, Kenny Rouges (manokan, Araneta St., Bacolod), MacBo, MacDonuts (donut shop),

Donalds (burger joint, Naga City Plaza), and McJolly. Mang Donalds serves the Big Mang!,
Mak-Mak, and a side order of Prince Fries.

Before you visit Janet Lim-Napoles, dont fail to drop by Pork Barrel Bar & Grill
Restaurant along Kalayaan Avenue (main branch) in Quezon City. Owner Baby Cruz, her
husband, and some of their friends conceptualized the restaurant in 1999 and wanted to
name it Pork Barrel sa Congress but the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) disapproved
the name, citing that it was very political. The restaurant was initially located along
Congressional Avenue in Quezon City and at that time the pork barrel was also the talk of
the town. The Pork Barrel in the name also refers to grilled pork, its specialty, and beers
that were used to be served in barrels. The restaurant used to have nipa huts named after
prominent congressmen but was soon discontinued to avoid controversy. The restaurant has
branches along Quirino Highway and in Antipolo City. (On a side note, there is an L B M
Lounge Restaurant in Wyoming, USA and a restaurant/hotel/spa named LBM 14C in Den
Haag, Netherlands).

heights, as competing businesses express it through their names. Cooking ng Ina Mo and
Cooking ng Ina Mo Rin are food businesses fronting each other, as well as Ka-me Mu-ra and
Mas Mu-ra Ka-mi, which serve Japanese food. Chinese delicacy stores Holland Hopia and
Poland Hopia, owned by Mr. Ho and Mr. Po respectively, used to be next door neighbors in

Shoe, a shoe business by a Chinese, had a next door competitor, Shoe We Do. Damus
Bookshop is just across Nostra Bookshop.
