Building hoagies the Wawa way

Annual literacy contest

sees 120 participants
reading for a combined
64,896 minutes
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
While many children chose to
spend their winter break playing
with new toys from the holidays
or running around outside, some
Mt. Laurel students chose to
spend their time reading.
And read they did.
This year, 120 students participated in the Mt. Laurel Library
and Mt. Laurel Fire Departments
seventh annual Get Fired Up For
Literacy program.
Each year, the program challenges Mt. Laurel elementary
school students in grades one
through four to spend time during their winter break reading a
book or two, or 10, or however
many theyd like.
Then, during each reading session throughout their break, parplease see KIDS, page 5

In celebration of the Route 38 Wawa grand opening last week, the Mt. Laurel Police Department and Fire Department faced off in a
hoagie building competition to see who could build the most hoagies in three minutes the Wawa way. The fire department was able to
edge the police and was awarded a $1,000 check and trophy.

LRHSD kicks off new year on a high note

By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
The Lenape Regional High School District Board of Education hit the ground
running in the new year with a strong first
month.
The board declared January as School
Board Recognition Month to honor all of
the board members within the district who
dedicate their time to the betterment of
students education.
January is also school ranking month in
which many news outlets provide various
standings of individual schools and districts nationwide.
Niche.com provides K-12 and college
rankings based on statistics, student and
parent reviews, expert insights, state test
scores, college readiness, graduation rates,
SAT and ACT scores and the quality of administration and teachers.
Three of the four district high schools
Cherokee, Lenape and Seneca ranked in
the top 100 high schools in New Jersey and

top 1,000 nationally. The district ranked 33

in New Jersey and 255 nationally.
However, arguably the most remarkable
ranking received a round of applause at
last weeks LRHSD BOE meeting. Under
the 2016 district with the best administration in the nation category, LRHSD was
ranked in the top 10.
We were No. 9, the only New Jersey
school district to make the top 10 in the nation, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm
said.
In honor of board recognition month,
Birnbohm thanked the board for the hard
work it puts in that allows it to receive national recognition like this.
Youre a great board of education, and
you let our administrators make great decisions for our schools, Birnbohm said.
Birnbohm rounded out her superintendents report with some highlights the district has already created in 2016.
School visits and tours took place to
learn about and observe the districts new
schedule.

Cherokee hosted Haddon Heights School

District and Lenape hosted Eastern Regional High School District, and both were
extremely impressed with the new process
and the smooth transition into the new
schedule, Birnbohm said.
Two of the newest features of this schedule that have led to its success have been
common planning time and community
lunch and learn.
Its really great to see the level of professionalism and collaboration that continues to take place during our new common
planning time with our faculty, Birnbohm
said.
AP European history teachers Jessica
Le Grange from Cherokee and Katelynn
Woll from Shawnee spent their planning
time sessions brainstorming a new collaborative activity that would include the AP
students from their respective schools.
Students presented themselves as ancient philosophers or scientists and displease see STUDENTS, page 13

Andrew, a sophomore on the

on the girls team, are integral to
the success of Lenape basketball,
especially offensively. Maddie
leads the girls team in scoring,
averaging 14.3 points per game.
Andrew is tied for second in scoring on the boys team, averaging
9.4 points per game.
Andrew and Maddie followed
similar paths into basketball.
Both began playing the sport in
kindergarten and progressed
through rec and travel leagues.
Both joined AAU basketball in
middle school and continue to
play on AAU teams today.
Despite playing basketball for a
long time, both admit it wasnt
necessarily their favorite sport
when they were younger.
I actually played every sport
possible, Maddie said. I really
liked soccer up until seventh
grade. But basketball just kind of
stuck with me.

I played three different sports

and basketball just came along,
Andrew said. I gave up the other
sports and stuck to just basketball.
Andrew and Maddie were talented enough to make Lenapes
varsity teams as freshmen. There
was a bit of an adjustment making the jump right from AAU and
travel to varsity.
The speed for boys was really
different, Andrew said. It was
more different getting into the
flow of things, especially going
from travel and AAU to Lenape
basketball. Its just so much different.
Maddie credited former teammate Alexis Sears, now a sophomore playing at the University of
Delaware, with helping her adjust
to the varsity game.
I always went against her in
practice, Maddie said. That
made it a lot easier to adjust to.
She helped me a little bit in

of an easier transition.

We thought about common

The students have also taken
advantage of their new period, as

16 THE MT. LAUREL SUN JAN. 27FEB. 2, 2016

Maddie will play ball at Siena College in the fall

MADDIE
Continued from page 15
Maddie replied.
We kind of just focus on helping each other out in different
areas now, Maddie added. He
helps me shoot because hes a better shooter than I am, and then I
help him with defense.
The siblings rarely get to see

each other play. Most of Lenapes

league games are scheduled with
the boys and girls teams playing
the same opponent, but at opposite sites. Despite this, Maddie
and Andrew make an effort to see
each other in action.
Once in awhile well see each
other play, Andrew said.
I consider us pretty close,
Maddie said. If we can go to a
Lenape game, we do.
On the court, both Lenapes

boys and girls teams played on

Jan. 21 with winning records. The
girls team has turned lots of
heads in the seasons first half.
After losing in the South Jersey
Group IV championship game the
past two seasons, the Indians
started the 2015-16 season undefeated with a perfect 10-0 record.
Maddie has been dominant at
times this season. She netted her
1,000th career point during
Lenapes season-opening win
over Bishop Eustace on Dec. 18.
Three days later, Maddie had a career game against Paul VI, scoring 26 points in another Lenape
win. Maddie has scored at least 10
points in all but one game for the
Indians this season.
We kind of just focus on what
we want to do, Maddie said. We
used our losses last year in the
championship as the motivator to
get back there and push us to the
next step.

The Lenape boys team entered

its game last Thursday with a 6-5
record, including wins in three of
its last four games. On Jan. 12, the
Indians defeated the defending
South Jersey Group IV champion
Cherry Hill East Cougars on the
road, 49-46. Andrew led the team
with 17 points in the victory. The
following week, Lenape beat a
strong, 8-4 Pleasantville team, 5846, with Andrew scoring another
nine points.
Were doing OK. We could do
better, though, Andrew said.
Theres things we can fix.
Next year, Andrew will continue his high school basketball career while Maddie begins her
journey in college. Maddie committed to Siena College last year
and will play for the Saints
womens team beginning in the
fall.
The coaches were really my
big thing, Maddie said about her

college selection. The atmosphere up there is great. Its a basketball town. Theyre on the rise
right now. Theyre 7-1 in their
conference and theyre trying to
get to the NCAA Tournament. Its
great up there.
Andrew said hes going to miss
Maddie when she heads to Albany, N.Y., saying shes a big part
of the person he is today.
Shes a role model to me and I
look up to her, Andrew said.
She teaches me everything. She
teaches me what to do and what
not to do in high school, in basketball situations and in life.
Maddie plans to continue following Lenapes basketball teams
and especially her brothers
progress even after she graduates.
We have a lot of fun, Maddie
said. Hes honestly grown up so
much, so Ill miss watching him
play.
