Form Tolerances

Form
Form tolerances are used to control the surface
deviation of single features or elements of single
features.
The following symbols are used to specify the form
control desired and require no datum reference.

Straightness
A Tolerance of Form

A line element of a surface is a
straight line.
A feature of size is straight.

Form Tolerances

Straightness
A Tolerance of Form

Means an acceptable part must be:

Within length tolerance.
Within diameter tolerance at every place measured
(measurement to be made perpendicular to surface
where measurement is made).
Straight within the boundary of MCM (i.e., part must pass
through a gage bore of 15.2 at least 40.0 long).
Have every line
element along the
part length straight
within 0.3.

Straightness
A Tolerance of Form

Means an acceptable part must be:

Within length tolerance.
Within diameter tolerance at every place measured

Straight within the boundary of virtual condition (MMC +
Straightness): i.e., part must pass through a gage bore
of 15.7 (15.2 + 0.5) at least 40.0 long.

Form Tolerances

Roundness
A Tolerance of Form

Roundness is a condition of a surface of

revolution where:
On a cylinder or cone, all points of the
surface intersected by a plane perpendicular
to a common axis are contained within a
tolerance zone bounded by two concentric
circles.
On a sphere, all points of the surface
intersected by a plane passing through a
common center are contained within a
tolerance zone bounded by two concentric
circles.
