FORMAT A USB FLASH DRIVE IN WINDOWS

Go to > My Computer, right-click the drive and select > Format from the menu.
1. The formatting options you have are > File system, > Allocation unit size, > Volume label, and > Format
options.
2. To format your drive, you simply choose a file system FAT32, NTFS, or exFAT then click > Start, click
> OK to confirm that you really want to erase all the data and the drive will be formatted.
WHICH FILE SYSTEM TO CHOOSE?
In Windows 7 you will see a maximum of four different file systems: NTFS, FAT, FAT32, and exFAT. You will not
actually see FAT and FAT32, if your drive is larger than 32 GB. So what is the difference between those files
systems and which one should you choose? Lets look at the benefits of each.
NTFS Compared To FAT & FAT32:
Read/write files larger than 4 GB and up to maximum partition size.
Create partitions larger than 32 GB.
Compress files and save disk space.
Better space management = less fragmentation.
Allows more clusters on larger drives = less wasted space.
Add user permissions to individual files and folders (Windows Professional).
Non-the-fly file encryption using EFS (Encrypting File System; Windows Professional).
FAT & FAT32 Compared To NTFS:
Compatible with virtually all operating systems.
Take up less space on USB drive.
Less disk writing operations = faster and less memory usage.
exFAT Compared To FAT & FAT32:
Read/write files larger than 4 GB.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION (s)
1.

Why does my flash drive shows less capacity than listed?

There are two main reasons why there is a discrepancy between listed capacity of the flash drive and
what shows up on your computer. For example: The most likely reason that your 4GB flash drive
shows up with only 393GB worth of capacity is due to the small discrepancies in algorithms and file
formats by various operating systems. Also a portion of memory space is reserved for system files and
data sectors for better flash drive performance.
The second reason your flash drive indicates less capacity on the device is due to capacity loss. When
manufactured, some devices were not made to support higher capacity of flash drives. It is always
recommended that you research information on the device manufacturer to verify the correct
supported format and capacity.

2.

What are the benefits of using a USB flash drive instead of burning files to a CD or transferring them
directly to another computer?
Necessity is the mother of invention, and USB flash drives are so popular today because they are
faster, easier to use, and more convenient than almost any other method. Burning CDs takes time,
and is a permanent process. If youre taking a project from your office to your home, and youre going
to finish it at the end of the week, burning a CD just for that can be wasteful. Whats more, if you
make changes to your project, you have to burn a whole new CD in order to take it back to work.
Transferring files directly from computer to computer can be sometimes be oddly complicated, and in
most cases, you need them to be right next to each other. With a USB flash drive, its as simple as
dragging and dropping your files and folders to wherever you need them.

3.

What is the difference between a USB flash drive and a regular flash drive?
A flash drive is a solid state drive (SSD) technology that stores data like a typical hard drive found in
most PCs, but uses no moving parts. Flash drives come in many forms, including external storage
devices, portable USB drives, and even as the main storage drive in some extra small laptops.
A USB flash drive is the industry term for a very small, very portable flash drive meant for easy data
storage or transfer, and which connects to a computer via a USB port. USB flash drives are so small
that most of them are designed to easily attach to a key ring.
