1. INTRODUCTION
This test plan describes the use of Doble F2000 test instruments to perform the manufacturersacceptance tests. Relay
settings and test connections are included.
These test plans describe the use of Doble F2000 series test instruments to test specific relays. The tests are based on the
manufacturers recommendations or common usage, relay settings and test connections are included. The title block above
identifies the relay and manufacturer, the function and ANSI device number, and the sources required to carry out the tests
described.
The plans do not contain details of mechanical inspection procedures but a through mechanical inspection is recommended
as an essential part of any routine maintenance program.
Where d.c. sources are specified but not available the relevant tests may still be possible using an external d.c. supply. Where
a high power source is specified the source should be used in the low power mode unless a source error is encountered. If a
high power source is not available tests may be possible using multiple low power sources in parallel or at reduced current
levels using one low power source.
Additional references to manufacturers and Doble literature are given where appropriate and unless otherwise specified
some knowledge of the relay or access to the manufacturers handbook is assumed. A sample reference block (for the GE
type GCX17) is shown below.

2. DESCRIPTION OF RELAY
A short description of the relay is provided including:
Relay function, application, and number of stages measuring elements or outputs.
Measuring elements and principle of operation and any auxiliary elements.
Common variants, setting method, and explanation of any unusual features.
3. CONNECTIONS
A connection diagram and block schematic of the relay are provided including labeled operating elements. These will usually be rear views arranged to reproduce the connection layout.
4. PRECAUTIONS
This section contains general warnings on safety, special notes on relay orientation, and notes for optimizing tests.

5. SETUP AND PROCEDURE

This section contains notes on test system connection, any links or shorts, and their purpose where this is not obvious. Relay
settings and assumed equivalent secondary values of voltage, current, and impedance, etc., and any assumptions made as to
options and/or selectable functions will be included.
Whenever relay setting changes, test equipment reconfiguration or major test function change is required, a new setup and
procedure section will be inserted.
6. TEST DESCRIPTIONS
The source assignments, connections, amplitude, phase, and frequency of the sources required for the individual tests are
shown in a tabular format as can be seen in the sample test (from a GCX 17 test) shown in Section 6.1. The source assignments are the Doble test source designations as they appear in the source front panel displays. The application of the timer/
sense input and its settings and connections are also shown and a phasor diagram is provided, where appropriate.
The format is similar of that used in Doble ProTesT, which is software used for computer control of F2000 Instruments for
testing and calibration of protective relays. Familiarity with either the manual or computer controlled mode should facilitate transition between modes. With some thought, and the selection of the appropriate macro (!), manual tests from these
test plans can be transcribed into ProTesTscreens for automated testing. This process may be used as a learning tool in
automated test plan development. Conversely, the test data from printouts of automated ProTesTplans can be used for
manual tests if the operation of the automated test macro (!) is known.
There are two sections to the test:
a)

PRESET shows the condition of the sources prior to commencement of the test.

b)

ACTION shows the initial value and expected relay operating value of the source (called the ACTION source)
whose parameters are modified during the test. The ACTION parameter may be amplitude (AMPL), phase, frequency (FREQ). Tolerances are included where appropriate. If the action required mimics a ProTesT macro, the
macro name is used to describe the action.
Magnitude or test time limits may be included for test progression or thermal grading, but the absence of such limits
does not mean that the test can be continued indefinitely without damage to the relay under test. For timing tests
the timer should be configured to start from the source designated in the preset conditions.
A test description of the action steps follows the table and includes suggested increment values, manual actions and
observations, and source enable/on/disable/off instructions. Where any manipulation of the test results are necessary to evaluate the test, these are described.

Sample tables are reproduced in 6.1 and further explained in 6.2 and 6.3.
(!) MACRO --- a predefined sequence of instructions or operations that is performed each time the macro name is invoked
under computer control.

7.1.1. If no further tests are to be made, disconnect sources and/or relay.
Terminals 5 & 6 were connected together in Section 5.2.
Remove this temporary connection.
Ensure relay has been restored to normal service condition.
